The graphics and visual style of this game are very similar but improved over BG1. as with BG1 I think they hold up very well due to their design how they are presented. this true for sound as well.

I love BG2 for all the reasons I loved BG1. it's a deep RPG with great mechanics and implementation. it's not held back by trying to say something about modern times or trying to echo present day issues in the game. the story and world takes priority and it shows. I love it.

It's a legendary game any RP fan should play.
*I use RP liberally as I like most RP games whether they are D&D based on things like Disco Elysium

The only reason this doesn't get a 10 is having to deal with 2nd edition dnd's quirks in a high level campaign, so they get way more exaggerated than the first game. Still great as I did a playthrough in 2023 and had a ton of fun.

The sequel to the great game, that does better almost everything that made the first game so great. Your companions feel more alive, the story goes global into the heroic tones of fighting half-gods and saving the world.
The combat mechanics are still a little enigmatic as there are a lot of dice rolling behind your back and stats are not helping if you are not familiar with AD&D system.

The combat mechanics are still a little enigmatic as there are a lot of dice rolling behind your back and stats are not helping if you are not familiar with AD&D system. This can get overwhelming especially when you need to level up your character.
But the story and the atmosphere of classic dungeoning is what makes this game great. You will be visiting big cities, discover dark secrets and completing quests for characters that seem to fit just right into this world.
There is a lot of reading and the combat is hard to figure out but it is worth it.

Update after fresh playthrough in 2023: Still the great game but some solutions seems dated. I love the freedom of exploring the first 3 chapters, but the the quests are not connected to world or each other and are quite fetchquesty. With almost every of them, it looks like the designers had one solution in mind (combat usually). It is visible when we compare old quests to the ones added in enhanced edition, as they are usually better. What is more, after playing modern games like Divinity: Original Sin 2 or Solasta, the combat and leveling in BG2 is significantly worse. I quickly resorted to lower difficulty with auto combat. Also, managing equipment is a pain.

Replayability with this game is off the charts. Maybe you forgot to steal from that seemingly powerful mage and maybe he had a scroll you could use. Maybe you haven't explored under every rock where someone could have lost his ring. Or maybe this time you want to have an evil party. Or maybe you just want to try a new class, or kill that dragon.

Baldur's Gate 2 will always be a classic. Maybe those who didn't play it back in the day or the new generations won't understand, but Baldur's Gate 2 is, and was a wonderful game that achieved everything you could ask for. A fantasy, pen and paper, D&D world where you can be whoever you want to be. The plot will do the rest.

The replayability is insane, because the developpers flawlessly transcribe the original D&D II core mechanics, with every single spell and ability (which means... a lot). The amount of work they put in that game is truly insane ( I genuinely can't find a better word ). And I'm not even talking about the art and graphics, at the time of release (still great today, and even better with the Enhanced Edition!)... This game is not only a game: it's an experience, it's a journey. And I urge anyone who haven't experienced it to do so.
The only negative: you will find most RPG really dull, after playing this one... And I have the sad feeling this will still be true in 10 years, or maybe more... And yes, I've played both Pillars of Eternity and Divinity, which are great, but still can't compete. Also played Planescape (impressive story, but almost no replayability), and the Icewind Dale Saga (very poor, in comparison, this one...). Not to mention The Elder Scrolls, from Arena to Skyrim from a different point of view, though, centered to the player only. No, really... I'm still waiting for the student who will surpass the master.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've grown so frustrated with how new games are made. They all seem to follow a formulaic, linear formula with too many cutscenes that take away control from the player, and brain-dead easy gameplay.
Baldur's Gate II is more engrossing than many newer titles. It feels ahead of its time. It reminds me of the Witcher 3: an open-world game with intricately crafted content, unique encounters, and consequences to your choices.
These type of RPGs are the hardest to make but they are the best ones. The amount of programming required to give the player so many options and choices is staggering. Its why they don't endeavor to make these type of games anymore.
The spell system is one of the best things about this game. There are SO many spells, too many spells really, but it allows for endless creativity in battle encounters. I highly recommend playing on Insane difficulty as your characters become more powerful. Some battles will be so difficult until you realize the perfect combination of spells. The combat is more intellectual and strategic than twitchy. If you get used to the pausing you'll become really quick with it like playing an RTS. If you invest time into learning all the spells and powers the combat encounters will always be fun and rewarding.

The writing is fantastic for an RPG and doesn't take itself too seriously. It draws from so many elements of the D&D universe to create a rich tapestry of adventures, always throwing a suprising and fresh new species, location, or encounter at you. IIts great to read writing from the 90s before everything became tainted by SJW nonsense. The writing is interesting, the stories are strong, and everything's to the point. It doesn't get carried away throwing endless walls of text at you (like PoE which I never liked). The balance between violence and alternate solutions is done very well. There's always an option to just kill everyone but the consequences will mess up your game. Still, its so important that the player CAN do these things. Even if its an illusion of control, its what makes RPGs so immersive.
They still attempt to make true RPGs like this one with Kickstarter releases and whatnot, but this game is a treasure, this type of effort will never be reproduced. Every moment in Baldur's Gate II is intriguing and interesting and the game never feels generic or shallow, which is so hard to achieve in an open world RPG but this is what they've done here. This game RESPECTS the player and you never see that anymore. Now we're just treated like 8 year olds, given on the rails brain-dead easy gameplay with glowing markers and yellow exclamation points constantly telling you where to go and that to do. And so I have to search the 90s for old games that give me that unfettered feeling I require to enjoy a game.

Each class gets its on base within the game and unique follow up quest. All characters have their side quest and character development. Also it is amazing how well the graphic still looks today (Yes it is outdated but look at the newer Neverwinter Nights for comparison). The Music is still good. The best part is the D&D part. You can develop your character in many ways and abuse some mechanics. The tactical potential is endless and there are no hard enemies if you know how to fight them. The different character classes give also lots of replayability (I used a Monk, Mage, Fighter / Thief combo and more). The villain is also really good. Baldur's Gate 2 checks nearly every content-box of an RPG flawlessly: a multitude of quests, vast amounts of unique and interesting loot, a myriad of monsters to fight, and a story which, while not exactly Shakespeare material, is quite solid and has one of video gaming's most memorable villains, voiced by an actor giving the performance of his career. Its sole, lackluster aspect is its mediocre character customization, but even in this it gets more mileage out of AD&D than most games.

BG2 might have been the start of Bioware's decline with its angsty, teenage romanceable companions, but it is also the mid era RPG at its pinnacle, filled with so much stuff in so many flavours you'll never get bored. Add to this the multitude of mods available for free through fan sites, and this content-brimming titan turns into an exquisite personalized experience as well.

There are still some random insta-death evens which I would rather not have in any game. There were still some difficulty spikes because, with so much customization it's obviously impossible to really balance a game. Encounters which took 2-3 minutes in game time but took me 40-60 minutes in actual time due to the excessive amount of pausing and running for my life trying to keep away from insta-death spells etc. I would rather have this game without these (and I assume it would have been commercially a bigger success) but I wouldn't change the world, the characters, the atmosphere, for all the AAA games in the world. The above would be among the best RPG main stories ever, but they aren't, they are SIDE quests! All for one game, one game that still stands in 2018 with a game world of unparalleled scope, atmosphere, and intrigue. Each of the above-mentioned quests takes hours, and there are dozens more that I didn't even mention, but there's always more to do, even after you finish them.

The massive scope of Baldur's Gate 2 is decorated with mostly text-based dialogue (though the main story line is almost fully, and fabulously, voice acted). Despite featuring the best side-content in all of gaming's history, the main story is still the best part of the game. Dialogue that represents the best writing the gaming industry has to offer. BioWare's storytelling in this game hasn't been matched for 17 years. Baldur's Gate is not a story about saving the world, like countless other RPGs. Instead, it is a personal story about your character's struggles with his own evil inheritance and corrupted lineage that has led to the people around him suffering because of your tainted blood.

But it features everything else we all love about the best BioWare games. BG2 Probably still stands as the best cast BioWare has written. 20 deep and intriguing, well developed characters make up the cast of NPCs you get to choose from to form your party of 6. Each of those party members will banter with each other, and will question your decisions, and sometimes your decisions will lead to them leaving you, or even trying to kill you. And if you manage to keep them all there's a classic BioWare style quest that is unique to each companion, and will ultimately shape your relationship with them, for good or for bad.

There's plenty complex gameplay that overlays a massive adventure here. 7 races, dozens of classes, and HUNDREDS of abilities and spells are all yours to experiment with as you clash with HUNDREDS of different kinds of enemies and monsters that represent some of the coolest beasts in Dungeons and Dragons, who all possess abilities and spells of the same complexity. Decorated with a fantastic inventory UI, THOUSANDS of epic weapons and other equipment to customize your party with, visually stunning spell effects and surprisingly immersive sound effects, this game still boasts the most epic RPG fights in the history of gaming. There's always something new to learn about the combat, so this gameplay will never cease to engage and interest you.

The main quest features many more well-written characters besides the 20 NPCs that you get to choose. A quest that will take you on unforgettable adventures, not only through the Forgotten Realms, but through human emotion. Torture, imprisonment, war, death, suffering, betrayal, deceit, love, redemption, and atonement are all features in this wonderfully dark and gripping tale.

The mage Jon Irenicus, the best videogame villain of all time, tries to strip you of your powers, tortures you, and interrogates you on your abominable and inhuman nature. These atrocities will linger with you for the entire game, and often come up in strangely philosophical nightmares whenever you rest. He takes your friends from you, and he steals your very soul, and leads you on the most enthralling fantasy adventure that has ever been crafted, as you chase him through Elven forests, Catacombs full of vampires, alternate planes of existence, cities below the Ocean, Mage Asylums, Islands ruled by barbaric Pirates, treetop Elven cities, The Underdark, Drow cities, Beholder lairs, Mind Flayer cities, a lair of Dragon Demi-Gods, a city besieged by an army of Fire Giants, Gnomish Cities, the ancient prison of the Prince of Demons, and even to the Deepest circle of Hell.

The level of customisation and deep character and NPC interactions, the variety of play styles, classes, spells, abilities, enemies, bosses and the epic story with fantastic, rewarding, and compelling side quests to partake in. The amount of spells to play with as a mage alone go into the hundreds, with all of them being unique and many of them having new added effects when you level.

They simply don't make games like this any more, and with this level of complexity. Pillars of Eternity is a decent effort but I think there's going to have to be a far greater attempt to dethrone this game.

That's what I call the pinnacle of RPG genre. Every character has it's depth, the story is immersive, there's a lot of side quests and locations. Romance options, different approaches, a lot of tactic options. Novadays, triple A games don't even have a quarter of what Baldur's Gate 2 had to offer back in the day. This game just puts those to shame. Absolute must-play.

Baldur's Gate 2 is by far the best rpg made. It's baffling just how much dialogue, sidequests, actual quests and quality you could include in 4 cds... If you're wondering, BG2 and ToB are a single package for me. When I see my nephews play fotm, and skip this... It makes me very, very sad.

For it is a timeless masterpiece wihtout comparison.

As a fan of the first game, I did play this one when it came out but could not beat it due to a problem with my save files. I have finally decided it was time to beat this and get it out of the way and yes, I do agree this is among the best cRPGs ever made.

First, let me start with some small criticism. Firstly, the open environment sandbox/exploration feeling of the first game is missing in the sequel. Adventuring in BG2 means mostly dungeons and things feel more linear than the first game. Second small drawback is the fact that some chapters are quite overwhelming, in the sense that you obtain dozens of long quests which can at times lead to confusion.

That being said, the effort that has been put into making this game is absolutely mind blowing. Baldur’s Gate 2 is as much dialogue heavy as Planescape Torment and as much combat focused as Icewind Dale. It perfected both dialogues and combat and mixed them beautifully into a single game.

Each quest can be completed differently, usually by choices depending your alignment be it good, neutral or evil. We get to see some of the familiar faces from the first game, yet it is perfectly possible to enjoy it without playing Baldur’s Gate, since the story is not tightly related. I would say the quests are usually more interesting than the main story, which in my opinion was lacking in comparison to the first game.

Notwithstanding the small criticisms, Baldur’s Gate II by all means is a masterpiece. With its epic soundtrack, awesome NPCs, party interaction and immersive atmosphere, it is a very deep 150 hours journey. It is not noob friendly and applies hardcore D&D 2nd edition mechanics, but once you can familiarize himself with the ruleset, you will find an unforgettable gaming experience.

I bought this game new as a teenager and dumped many hours into this game. I am now 32 and found myself bored with current video games thinking about the Baldur's gate and icewind dale series. I discovered the enhanced editions and have been playing both ever since. I am really hoping they make icewind 2 EE. Baldurs gate 2 is the best of the series. Deep story, quests for days, and, massive maps.

When I picked up the enhanced edition it brought back the feeling of a well designed top down RPG that gave you a challenge and had you feeling rewarded at the end of the day. All the hours I've poured in this game has been worth it.

Before revealing itself to be somewhat grander in scale, the game rarely has any lulls in the story. My one complaint is that because the character of Imoen was intended to die at Spellhold, she has no real dialogue once she's back in your party. This however is fixed in the equally fantastic Throne Of Bhaal expansion. One conversation in particular she has with Edwin is hilarious.
Since this game was initially released I have played through it countless times and still haven't done every quest, or seen every outcome. In todays gaming market which is overly saturated with generic shooters and the same Assassins Creed crap released yearly this is a total rarity. There are two games that almost match it and they are The Witcher 3 and Dragon Age: Origins. Of course, since Bioware effectively sold their soul to EA we have seen all of their quality drop dramatically, especially the Dragon Age franchise.
In summation, one of the best games I have ever played. Buy it.

The NPC companions are brilliant. Some of them won't like you or might even betray you depending on your choices. Some of them won't go together and will leave the party or even kill each other. Never seen better implemented or more meaningful party interaction and dialogue.

Quests are always interesting. Multiple ways to solve them. You can double cross people or trick them.

Combat is very fun, and because of the difficulty, it pays off to build a well balanced team. Or if you choose so, it can be fun to have a completely unbalanced one and face the problems that brings.

    I'm rating this a 9.6/10.

Every paid game journalist / writer that dares to put Dragon Age on the same level as this should get fired and be banned from the trade simply for lying to you. Hearing that limp menu music, seeing the whiny faces on character creation made me sick.

Baldurs Gate 2 says **** all that noise, **** saving the world for the 1000th time from blighting reapers.
You are not the usual world saving hero, beloved by all, like you are nowadays all the time. You have an own agenda, an own contextualization and drive. You can be a monster, slaughtering random people at will. Or you can be the classic knight in shining armor. Or you could be one of thousand things in between. All of it makes sense because Black Isle lets you brilliantly pick and pronounce you own motivation. Even after coming back for the 50th time, this to me is still so refreshing compared to the now usual "picked by destiny blablabla, shut up now and do as we say."

You will meet wonderful characters, each with there own state of mind and depth to them.

It is vast, full of charm, full of craziness, self-confidence and most of all: detail. You will wonder what happened to the industry and bioware (EA probably happened) when you right click a found magic weapon for the first time, just to realize it comes with its own 10-15 lines of signature lore and story.

Not sure about the Enhanced Edition. Get it on GOG, get the widescreen fix, the unfinished business mod and spend a bit of time getting to now the critical character figures that are a bit disorientating at first in Dungeons and Dragons V2.

I could either end it here or massively exceed the 5000 character limit.

King of Kings to RPGs. Fantastic characters, amazing world waiting to be journeyed and explored, very high replay value, stories that push and drive you forward. Only downside and CON is there'll never be another work of art like SoA.

This is a great role playing game that puts many modern day rpg's to shame. The story and characters are top notch, I couldn't put the game down once i started. The combat is tactical and often difficult which makes winning battles feel rewarding. The graphics will obviously be outdated, the game was released in 2000. If you haven't played this game yet you're missing out.

Just finished it some days ago. It is really the best RPG ever: Story 1st class, gameplay complex. Some mistakes in the controlling and overview (over the many spells f.e.).

Following my disappointment with Inquisition, I installed BG2 on my PC last week and since then, I have been playing in every free minute. It's my third playthrough (after the first in 2000, my second in 2005 and the present one). It's my third playthrough (after the first in 2000, my second in 2005 and the present one). So, since my last playthrough 9 years have passed and during that time, I have played tons of other RPGs (e.g. Dragonage, ME, Divinity, Drakensang, Witcher - just to name a few). And what do I realize in this very moment? Well, I expected that after all these "modern RPGs", playing BG2 would be impossible (old graphics, static world, etc.), but JESUS CHRIST, how **** mistaken I have been!
It's unbelievable, but BG2 is still a gem, even if you compare it to the newest games. In fact, it is a timeless piece of art. I simply love the graphics (the settings are so detailed and beautiful - almost as paintings that are great enough to be put on a wall...).
Then, the NPCs are simply amazing: Minsc and his hamster - I do not remember a character as cool and funny in any of the following RPGs ("Go for the eyes, Boo"). And Aerie and Jaheira in the same group: when they fight for your attention and love, be prepared for one of the best written and most realistic dialogues in gaming history. Oh an Edwin, the most arrogant sorcerer ever - take him for an evil playthrough, it is SO well done.
Besides well written NPCs and beatiful graphics, BG2 has an amazing game play and challenging fights. Gosh, the selection of arcane and divine spells is AMAZING - you basically have thousands of ways of shaping your mages and priests in a way you like it. Sorry to say, but Inquisition is a joke compared to what BG2 offered for RPG-lovers...
Finally, BG2 has a great story. OK, I admit, it's no too original story, but it is still exciting and epic - and more importantly: the dialogues and all the writing is superb. Moreover, you play a huge part in this story and - more, more, more importantly - most of your quests somehow relate to the main story or add interesting side stories. It's really a complete difference to today's RPGs (e.g. Inquisition) where you have to kill 10 bears to complete a quest. In BG2 such quests do not exist - REALLY!!! I also didn't believe it at first, but now that I play it again, I value this old tradition of quest writing - how could game writing degrade so much over the past years??? It's unbelivable that a game from 2000 has set the standards in story- and dialogue-writing that almost all following games fail to meet (there are a few notable exceptions like ME1). Isn't this unbelievable?
Anyway, I am going back to playing BG2 now :-) Cheers and praise to the old infinity enginge games, guys!

Between this and Deus ex, the year 2000 has got to be the best year for great games. Two different games yet the best of their class.

Hours upon hours of exciting gameplay, side quests, epic fights bound. The hand drawn background graphics are still beautiful now, especially with the upgraded high res version of the game. I wholly recommend it, it is one of the best out there.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am unsure why this game gets so much acclaim. This gate is the worst elements of a home brew table top game with a sadistic GM tossed into on massive punishing Video game. Flaws I found with the game:

    1) If you are continuing from Balder's Gate All your gear is taken and any acts taken there are irreverent in BG2. I.E. Characters that where dead can be alive and living characters can be suddenly dead.

    2) Dreaded Cut scenes that can whisk away party members without you being able to put up a fight, or place your party in disadvantageous positions at the start of a major combat.

    3) The story becomes increasingly convoluted including some of the most annoying RPG video game tropes such as being captured without a fight multiple times, bosses escaping when defeated multiple times, Super mages at every turn, Constant reminders that you must hurry yet few things in any are time sensitive, random punishment from social guardians, death of the main character mean you lose even in a world that has resurrection, Character interaction quests and dialogs show up randomly if at all, and ambiguous alignment changes. All of this serves to destroy any emersion in the game world.

    4) Not being able to finish side and romance quests if you complete the main story line.

    5) Weapon proficiency system that has so many categories that if selected wrong can discourage you from using some of the best weapons in the game.

    6) A terrible story line that has material that was dated even from when this game was released back in the day.

If you are intent on playing this game save yourself some agony, go online and find a walk through or strategy guide so you know what quests will lead you where so you can to everything you want in a way that won't drive you nuts. Also installing some community mods helps with some of the issues, but all in all it is a mess of a game.

There are some mechanics changes that were good such as ammo stacking to 40 items a slot, and bags of holding, potion pouches, scroll cases, and other such items to keep your inventory clean. But none of these make up for the punishing slog that is BG2. Honestly save yourself some time and play something else.

Also am liked exploration of map as it was done in BG1 here you begin from cherry on cake, inside town. But further I was disappointed, sometime confused like am not even explored town and NPC send me somewhere and everybody say it is urgent. First time am believed in this and am go there which really confuse me, because its better leave it for later after solve quests inside town. Something like please hurry am in great danger and am ok am going just give me month or two, where am arrived probably half year later after so much time spend on heal wounds by sleep (am play solo mage) this is bit not realistic, at least confuse me. Or I have dreams frequently by one night = one dream, and am dream everything possible so have no further dreams after week. Beginning of this game is hyper active, but maybe its better to be confused than bored. Where RPG should have smooth progression curve and here is too sharp like designed to create WOW shape on player mouth. Personally I have WTFOW but in overall good game, they tried to make it better from BG1 Expand

The one that wasn't surpassed still to this day and might never be. 9/10 Expand

Dragon Age Origins tried to emulate some of it elements and it partially succeded (DA2 is crap) but only partially. BG2 is still a game I play even today, and since its graphics can be scaled to any resolution with a small mod it can be played on modern computers without issues, and its 2d graphics still look decent and not distracting. Art style in the game is still unsurpassed by any game to date. Music is fantastic.

As for the game itself it has a wonderful story that gets perfect conclusion in Throne Of Bhaal expansion, probably the best "finish" to a game series ever, so emotional and deep, so rewarding and fulfilling. Combat is brilliant, no game ever reached the intensity of high level combat in BG2 and Throne Of Bhaal, you fight against many types of monsters, many spells are at your disposal, yes it is difficult for those not accustomed to hardcore RPGs or those unfamiliar with AD&D rules but it is well worth the effort. Quests, brilliant party members with their witty banter, memorable NPCs, tons of items of which most are unique, tons of spells, beautiful environments and clever writing make this game epic beyond anything I ever played. I dont think any game will surpass BG2 any time soon, that require a massive effort with brilliant writers but that is not likely to happen. If I was to look for flaws of this game I can find only one, not all lines are voice acted, probably a limitation of disc sizes at the time but it doesnt affect the enjoyment of the game. If only someone remade BG2 and Throne Of Bhaal in 3d graphics, just imagine BG2 with Skyrim graphics, now that would be something I would pay any money to have. Dont get me wrong, BG2 graphics scaled to modern resolutions still looks decent but imagine the immersiveness of 3d graphics, with all the beautiful art of BG2 its 3d version would be a work of art in which you can walk around and just admire the sights.

How brilliant is this game is shown by the fact that most players STILL consider it the best RPG ever, and they still play it FOURTEEN YEARS after it came out. BG2 aged perfectly, it is still a game that any RPG fan must play so if you havent played it yet get it NOW :D I still remember many key conversations in the game and can recite the entire evil godly ending down to the last letter.

Last we come to the replayability, that aspect is also unsurpassed, with the option of being male or female, and choosing different races and classes and with lots of party members to choose from, you can replay the game many times, I probably completed BG2 at least 20 times, and there is always more to discover, some small quests can be easily missed. And some quests allow you to take different paths so the replayability is beyond anything available today, Dragon Age Origins with Awakening expansion and other DLCs is the only game that comes close to BG2 and Throne Of Bhaal replayability but it is way easier than BG2 on AD&D rules, even at high levels in BG2 and Throne Of Bhaal you will get squashed if you dont prepare for fights, that is one more quality in BG2, other games make you overpowered in the end so you can simply walk around killing everything with ease and little danger to yourself, in BG2 you are certainly powerful in the end but still without preparation and appropriate tactics you get squashed, that is realistic. Now go and play it, your life as a gamer is not complete if you havent played BG2, trust me it is a life changing experience, warning-it will make you disappointed too because you will quickly realize how mediocre to bad are modern RPGs compared to BG2.

The single greatest PC RPG of all time. I still do a play through every now and again. Fantastic story devoid of cliches so common in current Bioware RPGs. Instead of being a hero destined to save the world, you are a hero destined to become an ultimate big bad. That alone should be enough to give it a try.

Another big plus for this game is the dedicated modding community. The game itself is great, but if you want more challenge or more quests, you can install mods available on the internet. That shows how strongly people love this game, they spend so much time creating additional content to share with everyone.

BG2 is so good, I occasionally dust it off and re-install it, just to play it again. Even though I know all the story, and have even memorized where all the item drops are. It's that good, I can't stop coming back for another taste.
