I tried to like this game, I loved the originals and Neverwinter Nights, but between the story not grabbing me and the combat requiring expert level understanding of the battle system, it's really not a fun game.

Massive sloggfest, and incredibly boring. I hated every single playable character I encountered because they were all irritating and just visually stupid looking. One of the top 5 worst gaming experiences I’ve ever had. It blows my mind that this game is as popular as it is because I would never recommend this game to anyone. I would like to get my money back.

I do think the combat system is pretty awesome, I like the different personalities and how they all have issues that the player doesn't necessarily like, it makes them seem more real. I like how choices affect gameplay. But that being said, I dont think this game really compares to dnd and i dont think theres any excuse to overlook things like basic character creation in a 2023 rpg. "Masterpiece" said someone on metacritic 1 day after launch for a game where you need 100+ hours to finish it
The game has many problems, from the writing, boring and long gameplay (need to wait for each enemy to do his turn, if you fight 10, have fun ) garbage companions, the only good ones are the ones from old games, but that don't count. Overhype again, like Cyberpunk

It's a 4/10 for me. It is not Baldur's Gate rather it is a Divinity Original Sin 3 in a supposed D&D Forgotten Realms setting.
It should be named anything else than Baldur's Gate, the name was used to draw attention of fans of BG1 and BG2 also IW/IW2 fans along but it's a totally different game.

It should be named anything else than Baldur's Gate, the name was used to draw attention of fans of BG1 and BG2 also IW/IW2 fans along but it's a totally different game.
Also if it would be named like that I would just simply avoid buying it so probably that was the plan - squeeze some money based on nostalgia.

The combat is dull, takes too much time, even the simplest encounters are spread to several minutes (yes I know it's based on tabletop D&D which is turn based bla bla bla ...) That supposed "swarm mechanics" is not working as it was advertised.
Game is totally out of any form of balance - it's more of a D&D based Dark Souls with very heavy emphasis on tactics like a Jagged Alliance game would be.
You party is mostly on a disadvantage and heavily outnumbered - which is infuriating at lower levels where your mage and cleric are put down like dogs in the 1st 2 turns of combat, the enemies can dash from any distance to your party while your characters can barely do 5 steps.
Party composition is not the best - if you think about this later on in the game you're very limited to your character and you need to disband one of the interesting characters Larian created cause your party composition will be bad (or you will miss out on some opportunities, fail some crucial dice rolls due to doing ability checks that are not proficient with which results in spamming quick save - quick load which breaks the game feel for me).
The rewards for completing fights (loot and gear) are in 95% of cases, worthless and pathetic. Most of the items that you find do ot benefit you like you would like it to be - you don't feel your characters gaining power. Still they get the same ass whooping from all directions like before.
Also in the gameplay what I don't like is that I'm constantly going forwards and forwards and forwards with the main story line. There's no rest, there's no such thing like having a stop, going to a tavern, getting some quests and getting new good gear and decent XP as rewards.
No. Seems that from Dungeons & Dragons we did not get the dungeons to explore (point of reference would be the BG2 once you leave the 1st dungeon to Athkatla and there's a whole game world waiting for you). During exploration, almost everywhere you go there are OP enemies that outnumber you so again there's something wrong with the game balance (not to mention enemies that roll with 600 or 300HP once you're like 6th or 7th level).
I don't even want to write about the skills and the dice rolls ... it's infuriating and spamming the quick save/load breaks the feel of the game.

    Advantages are:
    + characters(party members Lae'zel, Shadowheart),
    + graphics & animations,
    + overall optimization,
+ some parts of the world (some are not - no spoilers),
+ a lot of voice interactions (even if an NPC has 1 line of text - it's voice acted),
    + music is quite Ok.

Most of the stuff is very good but for me the show stopper are the things listed below:
    - boring and dull combat system with not working what was advertised
    - balance of the game (including party composition of 4)
    - rewards, XP and gear is weak
    - no sort of a "sandbox" where you can skip out of the main story and get some better gear and level up (map exploration doesn't count cause you' low level/low HP while enemies are tougher, in higher numbers and you're dead most of the time)
    - it shouldn't be named Baldur's Gate, it's not a sequel - that's a money grab nostalgia tactic

So, I joined in on all the hype, and I'm honestly kind of disappointed.

Long time D&D lover, but this has just been obnoxiously difficult to play. I've clocked in 28 hours or so in, and I'm just not finding myself having any fun. If I'm spending money on a game, I need to primarily have fun. The designs are amazing, fantastic really, but that's not enough for a video game in 2023.

ok the negatives.. 1/ i hate the turn based battles, slow, boring and tedious, coming from someone who loves assassin's creed odyssey and origins, this was my first turn based game, i was enticed with all the great reviews, but these slow turn based battles are a complete immersion breaker and real life is not turn based!
2/ the character generation seems very strange and even pandering to the woke obsessed minority, women with beards looking like disturbing drag queens high on drugs? and what's with the crazy obsession with genitalia size and shape etc, why do we need that? there are dedicated sex games to cater for that nonsense.
3/ camera controls using limited isometric zoom and rotation in only one axis seems somewhat odd and limiting.
4/ map exploration is very limited and each section you are in seems very small and is not really open world, its more of a limited follow the preordained paths world.
5/ last but not least, the actual gameplay seems clunky, almost in the rails..go this one way or the next which all lead to the next level door/opening etc, it all seems very controlled, limiting and preordained. you cant really explore or go off and do whatever mission you like or pursue a different objective...everything is spoon fed to you ..including the cutscenes and next objective....couple all that with a lame, turn based battle system which only serves to add unnecessary hours of tedium and delay in achieving your next preordained objective....spoils the whole experience for me. i realise many will find this game a satisfying slow romp...but to me its put me off turn based games for life! never again. 3 out of 10...its got more issues than most either realise or care to admit.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to like it, but the rose-colored glasses are off.

In virtually every way, except for graphics, it is a major step back from Divinity: Original Sin 2. Which would be bad enough if it was named DOS3, but it's also trying to go after Baldur's Gate nostalgia, and for some reason Swen thinks the best way to go about that is to crap all over those great games. Here's why it's bad and not worth your money:

-janky combat (mixture of Larian jank and 5e, both of which are bad enough, but mixed together are somehow even worse)
-turn-based combat with 5e is awful. Larian tried to spice things up by giving everyone push actions and inserting other random stuff so you're not just sitting there waiting 5 mins each turn just to auto-attack, but that is just a poor attempt to hide the problem.
-writing is immature, bad, and destroys immersion. People play/read fantasy as escapism, not to be moralized at by kindergarteners.
-no real choices: In an rpg you generally get to make somewhat meaningful choices while due to the limitations of computer software you're kept on the theme park ride to an extent. Choices in this game are things like: So-and-so has a magical bomb in his chest from sleeping with the goddess of magic (at lvl1). If you get upset with him proffering gay sex on your first meeting and your character murders him, 2 days later your game world will explode and it's game over.
-choices have no impact on future acts
    -buggy
-follows typical larian pattern of only polishing act1 and the game gets worse and worse, until you get to an act3 that is a disaster
-ending is awful (you have about 3)
-egregious amount of sex that does nothing to further immerse you in the game world or plot. It's simultaneously less believable than a harem anime and more grotesque than pornography.
-companions are all un-fun and obnoxious. They're clearly self-inserts by Larian staff, and this tells you a lot about why the game is so trashy. Larian said we'd get better companions after EA since they were only playtesting the worst ones (evil alignments), but this was clearly a lie. What they added in the full-release are cash-grab cameos that (also poorly done) of jaheira, minsc etc. So you're still stuck with the same group of unfun rapey companions unless you go full murder hobo and kill everyone (which is honestly the lesser of two evils here).
-UI is atrocious. No filtering of items. No text scaling (except for the dialogue that's already voiced, poorly). Clearly a compromise between console UI and PC UI, and bad at both. Larian has had the same UI issues since DOS1 and they're only making it worse (somehow).
-Combat is somehow worse than a 25 year old game. Larian's combat designer hates normal combat and honestly thinks throwing barrels at things and pushing enemies off ledges is fun. Instead it just turns this into a game of gimmicks, where you can either shoot a chandelier onto the big baddie every encounter and win, or play normally and frustrate yourself.
    -Music is dull and uninspired
-Dishonest marketing, dishonest sequel, zero respect for the fans, and in every way a step back from a game made 25 years ago.

With a vast world to explore with varied stories and secrets to discover, Baldur's Gate 3 definitely shines. The cast is largely appealing and voice acting is top notch all-around, even if the storytelling and line delivery is varied in its pace. Character progression is somewhat weak in the opening levels but has a strong foundation for a great buildcraft experience, even if it lacks some on the fly experimentation seen in Larian's past efforts. Despite some performance woes in the later parts of the game and controller hangups, this is a journey worth taking for fans of Dungeons & Dragons or those new to the role playing field.

Larian Studios, the creators of the latest installment, have gone to great lengths to make sure they didn't disgrace any of the franchise's building blocks. The love and care is evident in Baldur's Gate 3, though needless to pretend, there aren't a few bricks crumbling here and there in this monument. It's far from a perfect title, but on the whole Baldur's Gate 3 is a brilliant computer RPG that is undoubtedly not to be overlooked. [Issue#329]

Baldur’s Gate III is a title that many would not have thought possible just a few years ago. The game serves to further Larian Studios’s already strong reputation, and the studio deserves massive credit for refusing to panic, taking its time to get things right, and continuing to offer improvements even after launch at an impressive rate. Hopefully, it is able to reap the richly deserved rewards for doing so.
