It's the most complete game I've ever played in my life, with already 28 hours played I'm still in the first act because no matter where you go there's always something to do, quests, encounters with new characters or secret bosses, secret loot or entire new areas with lots of the previous ones and you FEEL how every desicion you make is premeditated and has a weight in the history. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One of the best games released in the past 20 years

Larian did a great job with this one. They made a game based on the mechanics that they've been refining since Divinity: Original Sin and have integrated everything seamlessly into the D&D universe.

I won't spoil the story for anyone. What I will say, though, is the fact that the sheer amount of content in Baldur's Gate 3 makes it endlessly re-playable. Every new play-through is different, sometimes due to chance, and other times because your response to a character was slightly different. It's also worth mentioning that the quests can be completed in a variety of ways. Are you tasked with killing someone? I wonder what happens if you just knock out that enemy. Do you have to protect a group of people? Why not work with the enemy and betray them at the last moment?
Baldur's Gate 3 stays true to the D&D formula, giving players freedom that is limited only by their imagination.

There are thousands of items to find, customize, buy and sell. Most of them can be used in ways you would not expect. The classes are well-defined and fun to play, the difficulty levels are just right, and the amount of voice acting, lore, and cinematics is somewhat scary, to be honest.

This is what happens when a studio, regardless if its independent or not, respects player more than they hunger for profit. It's clear that a big chunk of the game's budget went into accounting for almost any and every player choice imaginable. There are slight variations for every decision that players take differently than in previous runs, every character can be killed, evil characters can be knocked out instead of eliminated, there's armor to be found, weapons, potions, scrolls, clothing, and musical instruments.

And did I mention that just like in tabletop D&D, you can talk to every animal in the game and they all have voice lines? Oh yeah, and you can do the same with most corpses that you can find. Cast a spell, ask them your questions and decide what you want to do with that information.

The game does have minor bugs, but they're very rare, not game-breaking, and a quick save and reload fixes them. Larian's also constantly releasing patches to fix them.

Baldur's Gate 3 is a milestone in terms of game development, not because it offers massive amounts of content, but because it is a full, open-world CRPG with no micro-transactions, no always-online requirements, and no auction house. What you see is what you get, in the style of games from the 90s and early 2000s. It is a revival of game development for the sake of art and the players, not shareholders.

There is just so much to do, so many options, so many ways the story could unfold, so many amazing characters and beautiful sets. It doesn't feel repetitive even when I'm doing the exact same quest again because I'm doing it a different way. After the massive disappointment of Diablo 4 I definitely needed this. Expand

Larian knocked it out of the park, and this truly feels like a game that was created by gamers for gamers. Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the only games I’ve purchased in the last five or so years that I can honestly say was 100% worth the price. With the number of times that studios and publishers have scorned their player bases in the past five-odd years, Larian has proven once again that they are worthy of their community's trust. My personal GOTY, even if it doesn’t win. I think Baldur’s Gate 3 could even be called the game of the decade. A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

    Pros:

    -Replayability
My main concern with a story game was the replay value compared to the cost. With a wide array of classes/races to choose from when creating a custom character as well as 7 Origin characters to explore, you can have drastically different experiences between campaigns. Not only can every single combat encounter play out incredibly differently based on the party composition/class you’ve chosen for a campaign, but the choices you make while interacting with the world, the characters, and the storylines all can influence your experience. Every time I start a new campaign, it feels like playing an entirely new game within the same world.

    -Immersion
The graphics and the voice acting are absolutely superb and truly help you feel immersed in the world. The soundtrack adds ambiance and depth without being overpowering or seeming artificial. From bustling cities to beautiful forests and spooky dungeons, you truly feel like you’ve stepped out of this world and into an entirely new realm full of places to explore and secrets to uncover. A refreshing escape from the stressors of modern-day life.

    - Compelling characters.
The companions are well-fleshed out and offer their own interesting stories and quests, as well as offering commentary, advice, and their own unique benefits while traveling around the world. They even chat with one another while you’re exploring the world, which I absolutely adore. The care they put into the companions and even just the NPCs that you find while exploring is absolutely immaculate.

    -Combat
The three difficulty levels provide a nice range of options for players of all sorts. Explorer mode offers lower stakes but still challenging combat and is comparable to "story mode" on other titles. Tactician mode creates incredibly challenging, high-stakes combat encounters. Balanced is a perfect blend of the two. Regardless of which difficulty level you choose, the way in which you approach combat in this game is limited only by your own creativity. There are nearly infinite combinations of spells, attacks, and items that you can use to drastically change how you approach a fight on any character you choose. Personally, I am a huge fan of the turn-based combat system that BG3 utilizes, though that may not be the case for everyone.

-No Microtransactions, no seasonal battle passes, no hidden fees. Just a phenomenal, complete game that offers hundreds (if not thousands) of hours of content!

-Can be played offline in single player
Multiplayer does require an internet connection, but single-player can be played without.

    Neutrals:

    -Inventory management:
I am a loot gremlin, I will pick up everything that isn't nailed down. If you are similar, know that inventory management can be a bit of a struggle depending on your class (much more challenging on a gnome sorcerer than a human/half-orc barbarian for example). Your camp chest seems to be limitless storage though, so that helps since vendors have limited funds/stock at any given time!

    -Movement/Camera controls
They take some getting used to. Familiarizing myself with the key binds and the controls themselves helped immensely. This is neutral for me, rather than a negative, because BG3 does not make me simulation/motion sick like other games with similar controls do!

    Cons:

    -Intermittent lag
Sometimes I’ll encounter a little bit of lag. It’s normally if I’ve been to a certain area of the map and always stops upon restarting the game after leaving that one area. I don’t find it to be a huge issue, but it could be more annoying for others.

As someone who immediately steers clear of turn based combat and has never been able to get on with point and click style movement systems, I shouldn't enjoy exploring or combat.... But I really, really do. Being turn based works so well and because there are so many decisions and you aren't flicking through a menu, it feels a little more natural? Organic? I'd like it to how ff7 remake technically had turn based combat but it didn't feel like a traditional turn based system. I also don't like heavily narrative driven or dialogue heavy games but pretty much everything is voice acted and the VAs do a fantastic job. Some top, top talent involved and they really do bring the characters to life.

The detail, characters, writing, sheer number of things to do, find, discover and explore is incredible. I tend to eye roll at games saying "choices have consequences" but I'm running two main save files currently and honestly, both feel like quite different stories and games. Pretty much everything in game has multiple ways of tackling the problem. Do you kill everyone? Talk your way through? Convince others to go and attack? Slip poison into a barrel of ale? Sneak through? Convince them to actually fight on your behalf? There are so many spells, dialogue options and ways to go about things that if you think outside the box and get creative then you can come up with some hilarious and/or genius ways of getting round a fight or area.

It won't be for absolutely everyone but I would encourage people who aren't traditionally into CRPGs or turn based systems to at least check it out, watch some videos etc because I think a lot of people who think they wouldn't like the game would actually love it. I accept that there will be people who genuinely don't like it but a little bit like how elden ring and game of thrones were enhkhed by people who aren't traditionally into those genres or fantasy etc, I'm positive that there will be a lot of players who, like me, initlaly write it off but after trying it just fall in love with it.

I've now got over 400 hours in the full game and early access and know I'll comfortably exceed 1000. With Larian confirming mod support, modders will likely do their thing and keep this playable for a decade or more. I'm confident in saying that this will ultimately go down as my favourite single player offline game of all time. It's genuinely superb.

With a vast world to explore with varied stories and secrets to discover, Baldur's Gate 3 definitely shines. The cast is largely appealing and voice acting is top notch all-around, even if the storytelling and line delivery is varied in its pace. Character progression is somewhat weak in the opening levels but has a strong foundation for a great buildcraft experience, even if it lacks some on the fly experimentation seen in Larian's past efforts. Despite some performance woes in the later parts of the game and controller hangups, this is a journey worth taking for fans of Dungeons & Dragons or those new to the role playing field.

Larian Studios, the creators of the latest installment, have gone to great lengths to make sure they didn't disgrace any of the franchise's building blocks. The love and care is evident in Baldur's Gate 3, though needless to pretend, there aren't a few bricks crumbling here and there in this monument. It's far from a perfect title, but on the whole Baldur's Gate 3 is a brilliant computer RPG that is undoubtedly not to be overlooked. [Issue#329]

Baldur’s Gate III is a title that many would not have thought possible just a few years ago. The game serves to further Larian Studios’s already strong reputation, and the studio deserves massive credit for refusing to panic, taking its time to get things right, and continuing to offer improvements even after launch at an impressive rate. Hopefully, it is able to reap the richly deserved rewards for doing so.
