    This game contains some truly unique charm that rarely I see in the today's game.
    I can see the way that the development intent to make when they make this, and I like what they've done here.

    Surprisingly much, much, much better than what I have initially thought, honestly.
    It's the kind of game that only when you playing determines levels, can you see the cool and amazing stuff hidden in it.
    I'm pretty happy to experience that I've had with this little big game.

    This game is like eating burnt toast off of rotten broccoli. The sluggish pace is like the slimy verdure, and the burnt toast is like the stiff animations and bland gameplay. Truly a catastrophe. Would trip over again

    balan wonderworld is a distaster. I could write a lenghty review why, but I'll do what balan devs did and just not give a sh. Instead I suggest you watching Videgamedunkey on YT about this game.

    Btw, do NOT believe any 10/10 scores. This game doesn't deserve even "fanmade", nor even "school project" badge, it's so bad.

I’ve never experienced such a hollow and bland game. It’s clear after playing ~5 hours that the decision to use one button was not a creative choice but a method of cutting corners.

    I think young kids might be fine with this game and will find much enjoyment out of this but anything past that is a far cry. This games plot is quite unexplained with it only being told through cutscenes which sometimes literally have no subtitles or context to explain whats going on. But what P5 and Kingdom Hearts does well with this game does not. I dont even wanna go into the dance scenes that happen at the end of the levels as they are even more of a complete joke on this games story and content . Level wise, the rolling features and how the world is generated are actually quite creative and is likewise a unique concepts that i do think would work well in a far better game. Aside from that, most of these levels suck and are far too simple and boring to be considered a challenge for anyone whos not a young child. Costumes are also probably the worst feature of this game by far when it comes into level design(and they have 80 of them!). For example, you literally have costumes that break blocks but cant jump and then literally costumes that do the exact same thing. You could also even have costumes that are strait useless since the level literally doesn't even require you to use the abilities presented. However I think the biggest waste of time in the levels is the gold hats that take you through these weird mini game things where you literally press A at a specific time ( I dont know it was a weird concept ). Boss battles however are the worst of this game. Understanding that this is a kid friendly platformer, I do get that boss battles like these are meant to be simple, but the ones in Balan are too simple and worse. You can literally walk up to the boss and hit it without even trying and the game has no defenses in place to make it challenging. One boss even moved so slow that you could literally catch up to it and showed how baffling unfinished and easy the level was. It is such a shame that this is actually the only action gameplay presented in this game as it is unbearably slow and boring. Overall, this and the story shows how much of a joke this game is. From the cringeworthy narrative and god awful dance scenes to the nightmare of gameplay, this game is a joke to all platformers. Whats even ironic about this all is that the creators of one of the best platformers (Sonic) are involved in this game and this game was built as the launch title for the new Balan company at Square Enix. I don't even know how the hell talent such as theirs lead to such an awful game and could be one of the worst games of 2021. My only positives I can however give this game is the level generation (specifically on the first world) that actually was quite interesting, the entertainment and simplicity that may make it popular for young kids, and some of the soundtrack although there have been theories of this game using stolen Mario and Ghostbusters music. As for my final thoughts for this game however, I would definitely not buy this.… Expand

    There's one that just turns you into a box against your will, one that lights torches (used in one level), one that opens doors (used in one level), then there's the level with the lava floor where you get one that turns lava into terrain, even though the lava does that automatically, then you get the lava-walking one, then the whole level turns into water. That's not dynamic gameplay, that's just bad. There's also the ladder one, where you spawn ladders that clip through walls, you get the robot which is a worse version than the pig, even though you get the pig way earlier in the game, one that teleports maybe five feet, and it only works through walls thinner than cardboard, the once that turns you into a dragon with such **** range that it gets outclassed by the first power up in the game. It's insane
    i bet the devs had a pool going to see who could make the dumbest costume and still get the higher ups to approve it. if it gets denied, you're out.

    Sadly that's about the only good thing about the game.

    Very forgettable story, slow and tedious gameplay and powerups that often if not always feel clunky to use. Some of these powerups also seem to be copy pasted with the smallest of differences and a new "skin" which makes you feel like the previous powerup is completely useless and makes me wonder why they even bothered adding the "V0.5". Most of the time giving the "V1" (the better copy pasted powerup) wouldn't result in anything negative even if they were to be given way earlier instead of "V0.5". I'm not sure if the lead gameplay designer wanted to go for "very bad PS2 game with no previous game design experience" approach when it comes to the game but that's certainly what it felt like and it ends up feeling janky and uninspired when playing.

    I would not recommend anyone picking up this game unless it's on a major sale (70%+). Instead go and have a look around the indie scene, where you can find better, cheaper and more stand out experiences.

    PS: I have to say that it is rather disappointed seeing review botting (Negative or Positive) Do not let yourself be fooled by the Metacritic score.

    PPS: The QTE's were painfully easy and I'm generally not for it in most games but I'll let it slide as the rest of the game is rather poor    … Expand

    First, the gameplay. Honestly, I don't mind it. The patch fixed the movement speed and jump being too slow and floaty so it doesn't feel awkward anymore. As for the controls, I followed the game since the initial reveal back in July 2020 so I always knew what it was going to be like and the issues with everything relying on the same button. I think it's heavily flawed but the level design is built around it surprisingly well so it doesn't really feel like too much of a problem to me. I'm not constantly switching back and forth between powers because the levels are broken down into chunks. You have sections where you fight enemies, sections where you're just running along trying to solve a puzzle to progress, and designated exploration sections where there's very obviously something hidden for you to find and you have to get to a hard to reach spot somehow to get it. They're usually distinct and I only found myself switching once every few minutes. It's not bad at all but still I have to ask... why even have this system in the first place? What was the point?

    Then there's the powers themselves. There are so many repeats. There's a costume that lets you cross gaps and then three more that do the same thing, although they give you more distance and one gives you extra vertical height. I guess it's cool that there's more useful versions of powers later on but it just feels lazy. If they're just variations of each other then why not have an upgrade system instead? Let me turn my Air Cats into Frost Fairies or something. There's no point in having both. There are some creative powers such as one that lets you detach your head and fly around and one that lets you teleport to large gems but there's not that many like them. I like the amount of options they give you but it still seems a little underwhelming overall.

    More about the level design, I actually think it's well done. In general the collectibles are hidden well enough. Nothing ever feels too unfair. There are some costumes that do feel really satisfying to find for the first time like most of the post-game ones as well as Double Jump and Paladin Punch.

    The visuals and soundtrack are good. I have no complaints about anything though I know a lot of people will hate the cheesy vocal songs. I love them though. It's like I'm watching a really awkward Disney movie and it's kind of great.

    Last, the story. So it's a platformer and a 90s esque one at that. I wasn't expecting amazing storytelling but I was at least expecting more than what we got. Nothing is explained at all. I don't know what the Tims are, what the clock is, what I'm even doing or why I'm doing it, the relationship between the characters and the protagonists, why I should care about these people, why everyone's always dancing for no reason, etc. Nothing at all. There is a novel that goes along with the game but I don't want to have to purchase supplementary material just to be able to understand the basic story. I did read the book and while it was a very fun read, this shouldn't be necessary! Game books are supposed to be for the extra lore, not this. I don't know if they were scared of bogging the game down with cutscenes or what but they could have just made them skippable. No one would have complained about optional content. They don't have to be the big budget prerendered ones, even simple in game cutscenes would have sufficed. They made all these great looking models and even created a fictional language and it's all barely used. I just don't get it. Why? Why ignore all of that? What happened here?

    There's so many things I like about the game but it feels like for every one thing it does well, there's something it does totally half-baked. I don't know how I feel about it overall. I enjoyed playing this game for the most part but I can't actually determine if it's good or not. That's how conflicted I am about it. A game has NEVER made me feel this way before, for better or worse.

    I'm giving it a 7. I think it's more of a 6.5 for me but 6 feels too low since I did generally enjoy most of it. I have NO idea what the people rating it 10 are thinking, same with the ones below 5. It's not amazing but it's far from terrible. It's just a painfully average game with a couple satisfying bits thrown in here and there. If you like 90s era platformers then you might like this but just wait until it goes on sale. It's fun at times but not $60 worth of fun    … Expand

    An awesome platformer oozing 2000s nostalgia, feeling just like a game from that era but with high quality visuals. and a story that while simple, still manages to be impactful. (Heavily suggesting you pick up the novel and give it a read!)
    While there are some issues i've had during my 100% playthrough, none of them persist throughout the game like the hitboxes on the projectiles of a few select bosses. Some even have workarounds, although quite unorthodox, like with having to reset a world to try an another go at a perfect Balan's Bout.
    I especially like the amount of strategization the player is challenged with as they're required to choose three from the 81 outfits the game has to offer, each one with their strengths and weaknesses. Every problem can be approached by the player in their own way and having a plan work after evaluating the enemies and environment around you and choosing a costume loadout suitable for them never stops feeling satisfying. (Currently clocking in at 45 hours, all golden statues collected and Hard Mode Stamps on everything but Act 3s)
    After 2020, i think everyone's deserved a hint of positivity in their life. If gaming from 2000s with games like Monsters Inc. Scream Team, Glover, and Chameleon Twist etc. is something you loved, consider giving Balan a shot. If you're a fan of more modern platformers, wait for a prize drop.

    Edit: My review was recently featured in the "What Happened?" episode for the game and despite being only for a moment, i think it's worth pointing out that i really would've preferred if that place was reserved for one of the actual fake 10/10 reviews of the game, especially when mentioned together with and i quote "Most of them in broken english and all of them hilarious".
    It's not very fun to be not only be basically ridiculed for having a different opinion by others in the internet and on top of that have my review featured like this. I actually put effort into putting my acknowledgement of the game's mistakes while still liking it into words.    … Expand

    It's the most original platform game made in years, and a really colorful and enjoyable platform game.

    It's awesome but Yuji Naka's games always are - it's imaginative, magical, mysterious and has a great artstyle.

    My only real criticism is how the battle music often interrupts the level music.

    If it were me I'd reserve music changes for boss or mini boss battles.

    Look, I of all people have the biggest chip on my shoulder when it comes to Balan, Square Enix doesn’t love me and wont send me codes anymore… And even I am baffled at the low metacritic score and IGN calling this game bad… it isn’t.. not even close to a bad game… This is probably one of the weirdest games youll ever play, you chose your haracter in the start and youre basically on the journey to fix the hearts of numerous characters all with their own story of sadness… this ggame will remind you a lot of a Mario game… in each level there are golden statues for you to collect that are required to move onto the next section of the world like a star in a Mario game or any other collectathon.. so the challenge does not come in clearing levels, it comes in hunting these things down… which here lies my biggest issue with balan… its insistence to give you collectables that you cant even reach with that level’s characters… each level youll be finding keys and crystals with different chrcters that will give you new abilities, either an attack, or traversal ability for the majority of the time… some charcters not even being able to jump, so youll be essentially character deck building… you can even bring charactrs from other levels into the next levels.. and Balan runs with this in a really frustrating way… there are so many times youll see a statue out of reach because yo udont have the right character from either a previous section or a future section, an in a game all about collecting as many statues as you can to move on, this can be super annoying…. Back tracking and replaying aa few levels almost feels mandatory.. but I do appreciate the variety here.. each level for the most part felt unique to me and memorable.. . at the end of 2 acts in one chapter you will take on a boss, these bosses are all super easy to beat, but it int about beating them, its about finding 3 different ways to deal damage, as youre rewarded up to 3 statues in the end based on your fighting variety… I do feel as though Balan Wonderworld overstays its welcome, clocking in at about 11 hours… and I am annoyed how luck based certain statue erning activites feel… and the overall lenth of the game also makes balan wonderworld just feel overwhelming as again its about colleting, not completing.. you unlock a new set of levels and it isn’t like man I cant wait to see what they throw at me next.. its more so, great, to unlock the next section of the world I need to find 4 statyues in this many levels before it gets back to only finding 3… and it was a strss that proved to just be too much for me during the final stretch.. A game that started with fun, ended with anxiety and frustration….
    Overall though I guess Balan Wonderworld is a game youre either going to click with or not, I for one don’t understand why o many people think this is a bad game,
    I guess because a bit of the sonic team worked on it and this isn’t a sonic game?
    I don’t know, I enjoyed it.

    The costumes are funny and interesting to use and kind of remind me of Mario's hat system from Mario Odyseey which is nice because it seems not many are trying to compete with, match, or exceed that game.    … Expand

    2. Characters that are interesting, charming and naturally likable, and the way they tackle serious issues in life gives you a good reason to care about the characters!... In other words they're not just bland generic flesh-robots that you're forced to play as after one of them abruptly murders the beloved main character (without any proper transition/build-up that would've given it an emotional impact that it completely lacks when it happens), nor do they feel incredibly forced and manipulative with little to no actual character development whatsoever with their main appeal being pretty much just SJW bait. The characters in Balan Wonderworld are nothing like that at all.

    3. A decent story that is pretty simple but carefully structured in a way that is easy to follow, and is not an overly complicated incoherent mess that doesn't even know what kind of messages it's trying to convey, nor is it overall insulting to human intelligence to the point where it ultimately pushes you away and makes you never wanna play it ever again, instead of it drawing you in wanting more, which Balan Wonderworld always does!     Balan Wonderworld is a $60 game, but I wouldn’t recommend it for even $10. It oscillates between boring and infuriating. The most fun I had with it was when I got costumes that made it feel almost on par with a mediocre Sega Dreamcast platformer in terms of capabilities. The kindest thing I can say about the game is that it does make for an entertaining livestream. I broadcasted my play on Twitch, and my audience seemed to really enjoy watching me suffer. So I guess this is a great one for all those fans of masochism out there. Let’s call it The Room of video games.
