    Backyard Baseball 2003 was probably one of the first video games I've ever played. With simple controls of the mouse and America's favoriteBackyard Baseball 2003 was probably one of the first video games I've ever played. With simple controls of the mouse and America's favorite past time, I would have thought of it as a masterpiece. But hey, this isn't 2002 anymore. So let's look at it more from a present stand point, okay?

    Backyard Baseball 2003 has a couple of modes to play with, the two that many kids will start out with is either Single Game where the the player and computer takes turns picking players and then using them to play a single game of baseball. Or Season Play, where the player makes a team and then plays a season of baseball in order to try to win a shiny trophy.

    Going into the mechanics of the game shows much potential. Characters can have their stats either increase or decrease depending on various situations and the controls are as simple as choosing the type of pitch/hit and then clicking to swing or pitch the ball. In fact, most of what you can do is done simply by using the left mouse button, sometimes the right mouse can be used in certain circumstances like needing to run back to a base in case tying to steal wasn't such a good idea. Simple, like it should.

    Any downsides this game has is that the characters voices tend to sound like they were voiced by two people (and most of them were.) And that the game has a tendency to sometimes glitch. For instance, there was this one time where I was trying to send a runner to home plate and ended up getting caught in a pickle (a term for being caught between two opposing players trying to get you out while between bases.) The ball was being thrown around until it hit my player while he fell down. He ended up caught in an endless cycle of falling down and was teleporting everywhere! These things rarely happen, however. But it can ruin what's supposed to be a good time.

    Visually it looks great, even if it takes much from the previous version released in 2000. There is an updated roster to have all-star pro players as kids from the 2001-02 season, there are only a few remaining players that still play baseball today... so any kid now who is into baseball won't recognize most of them. It really is a product of it's time when you think about it, though it's easy to say that for any sports game that isn't the latest year.

    That isn't to say you shouldn't buy this game. It's just a bit dated is all, and playable. If there isn't another baseball game made for kids that's been made later and that they are able to play, maybe consider looking for this one on Amazon.    … Full Review »
