    Aztaka is some simplified combination of Zelda II, Diablo, and Metroid -- A side-scrolling hack-and-slash with a degree of back-and-forth exploration. The action is fun, if a bit clunky. The various energy types that you can manipulate with mouse add a bit of a puzzle aspect that has a good amount of originality. If not for its rare but tedious level design bloopers (where you can get stuck for a really long time even when knowing what to do) this game would be much much better. As of now - the story is decent, graphics are pretty, music is also very sweet and calm for the most part, but the frustration that you have not run into since the first Mario tried to jump over a 4-brick high wall is back in this game! Shame! Getting stuck in one place for an hour trying to jump over a crevice is not my idea of fun... RPG element is nice - you gain XPs and distribute them among different skill - development tree could use some Info though - rarely do you know what you are investing a point into. The Map is confusing with the names of the locations becoming absurdly disorienting with each new location. And the description of Quests is vague - if you get stuck, don't even think of opening your quest log to see where to go next - it's not going to tell you! :( The game is also pretty short. But considering it's Citeremis's first title - i must give it a bow of respect and hope they will continue to improve in Gaming Design.… Expand

    Aztaka is an indie throwback to the good old side-scrolling action RPG genre. In this gorgeous hand-painted world. Playing Aztaka remember me rpg elements from some old school titles like Zelda 2, Battle of Olympus, well know Castlevania and Diablo. If you're looking for an RPG/Side Scroller, give it a try!

    Explore a fresh universe from Aztec lore, find treasures and equip yourself. Solve puzzles through an innovative hybrid control scheme by manipulating spiritual energy and embark on optional side-quest to acquire valuable items and gold to buy more and more trinkets. This is what you will enjoy in that action/rpg side-scroller hand-painted world.

    This is actually a pretty decent game--a nice slow paced casual adventure. It's mostly a platformer game, but includes some basic RPG elements. A unique story with complementary music, very intuitive controls, and a good amount of leveling skills keep it interesting. On the downside, there isn't a whole lot of action, fighting is one dimensional, and casting spells is a little awkward. TheThis is actually a pretty decent game--a nice slow paced casual adventure.     Aztaka is a fun and simple game. It's a 2D side-scrolling / action with few RPG elements. The graphics are awesome and Citeremis's did their research about huitzilopochtli in the Aztec mythology. The game can be a bit hard at some places, but the challenges are usually well rewarded. The new game version is also a lot more well balanced. If you like 2D old-school game, try it its worth the price.

    Aztaka is visually stunning. From the moment you start it all the way through to the end the beautifully handpainted art stands out. The professionally recorded soundtrack inspired by aztek culture also fits in perfectly. The story isn't too far off from the actual tales and it is fun and captivating.

    My only gripe with the game are some of the gameplay aspects. mostly relating to hitting    Aztaka is visually stunning. There are also some interesting ideas, like the way the skill levelling is handled, as well as your familiar being in charge of magic and levelling magic stats, whereas you only level up the brawn attributes.

    The combat is very so-so. You learn some    It's not a bad game at all. The visuals are stunning and the music is pretty great, and together they give each location a nice atmosphere. There are also some interesting ideas, like the way the skill levelling is handled, as well as your familiar being in charge of magic and levelling magic stats, whereas you only level up the brawn attributes.

    The combat is very so-so. You learn some nice new moves along the way, such as being able to hurt enemies whilst performing air flips, but overall it's very tedious and most enemies seem to be damage sponges that take forever to die, not to mention shrugging off your hits whilst you're attacking them, meaning you'll always be getting hit back whilst attacking.

    And as you go, you keep meeting the same 2-3 enemies per area again and again and again. Eventually you stop fighting them and just flip over them, because some of the latter levels are just way too long and convoluted. I got fed up when I ended up in some ant cave full of giant ants everywhere. The level went on forever and I just kept getting lost, and when I died, I'd just start back in it because the game autosaved (and you can't save manually). So I'm essentially stuck there and can't go back.

    It's really a shame, because some other levels, like Ehecalk Temple, were designed pretty well and were fun to explore. It's as if the devs ran out of ideas at some point and just started throwing in really long and repetitive levels with dozens of enemies everywhere.

    I also don't quite understand some of the enemy choices. Whereas Jaguar warriors and haunted masks were quite fitting to the Aztec setting, on the other hand Centauri were out of place.

    Don't expect to find much of a story in the game either. Although it starts as though you're on someone's trail, eventually it just boils down to "go and collect these 7 phonograms all over the world".

    Overall I am quite disappointed. It started off as a promising game, but then lost its footing very quickly and turned into a very average sidescroller with gameplay issues. If you're really curious to try the game still, I'd suggest to just get it when it's on sale.    … Expand
