Push through the tedium and you may just be gobsmacked by the game’s beauty.

Putting aside the visual and environmental overhauls, most every change Black Flag Resynced makes is either a downgrade, a sidegrade, a nice-to-have, or not especially exciting. But even taken in isolation, the glow-up here is so skillfully crafted and transformative that it almost feels worth the price of entry alone. Almost.

I think Ubisoft hit a pretty solid balance with this remake that's going to satisfy a lot of people. They could've just done the bare minimum and focused entirely on the visuals, but instead, they've fixed, redesigned, added, and polished a ton of stuff—plus, it's launching at a lower price than a brand-new game. And even though some things were left out, those little rough edges actually help it feel like the exact same game you remember and love. [Recommended]

One thing Black Flag Resynced does improve, greatly, is its mission structure. Gone are the restrictive tailing missions that punished you with instant failure if you were too slow, and the entirely linear objectives. In their place is freedom to find a few different paths to a solution. Screwing up and bumbling your way to that solution is very much one of them, though with Resycned's smoother parkour, even bumbling feels stylish.
  3. Despite its additions and tweaks being hit and miss, Black Flag Resynced’s still at its best when Kenway’s at the helm of his sloop, wheeling it around through storms and battles like it’s a Vauxhall Corsa with gunpowder-lined subwoofers. The navies of two Western empires reel like boomers in Rover 75s at the sound of his pounding iron techno blasts, as he cries ‘heave, ho, heave, heave’ over the throbbing din of class warfare. He jumps out of a window and leaps atop their bonnet, neatly slicing off the aerial as his crew swarm the doomed tub, scratching its paintwork with their rusty blades. Then, Kenway slits Ken and Doris’ throats with his hidden blades, lest you forget that there be an okay Assassin’s Creed game lurking beneath the waves of all the top-notch pirateing.
