I loved Operation Flashpoint, ARMA, to some extent ARMA II and for sure Iron Front Liberation 1944, but ARMA III....

The landscape is at best dull and featureless. It reminds me of Delta Force from 1998....

The driving is the same as before, only now I drive in mostly fantasy vehicles (or at least completely unknown and perhaps planned-for-the-future vehicles) that I have no emotional relation to whatsoever save that I don't like them (gut feeling). They are pretty much the same for all sides in the game, with the exact same weaponry I guess to "balance" and make each side equally strong (read: boring). In short; I don't like them at all.

The small arms are ALL boring. It's all futuristic weapons. There is not one rifle in this game that I would have wanted in real life (and I am a gun nut...). They have more realistic recoil and better sound, but.... blaahhh. No thanks.

Uniforms are rather cool, with different camo options that are actually rather nice, but... they are all ultra futuristic and to me at least that is a big no no. You can also take a uniform from a dead guy (even if you killed him with canon fire) and put it on in about 0,1 second. So you can enter a house, change uniform and exit all in a few seconds. And they call this a war simulator....

Aircraft. Futuristic choppers. At least one fixed wing aircrafts..... I was not intrigued and didn't bother checking this feature out properly.

    Single-player campaign. No such thing.

    Single-player scenarios. No such thing.

    MP campaign/scenarios. No such thing.

You are left to make all of this yourself. Ironically this might be no big deal though, because their scenarios and campaigns in the other games they have made all SUCKS, so you would have ended up making them yourself anyhow.

The editor is superb, so you can do a lot with this game, if you want to and if you can stomach all the futuristic features.

Optimization. I don't know. It works okay on my PC, but I have never tried it with many units.

    A. I. It's pretty much the same as before, only now the enemies run away much easier (I think), and then after some running change their mind and come running back again. So in effect they e. g. run away up the side of a hill, turn halfway up and come back down. So I have the time to finish their other team members off, and then wait for the runners to return so that I can shoot them too. I have no idea if that is supposed to be good A. I. or not. I don't like it though.

Graphics is good, but I feel like "what's the point when the landscape is that featureless and boring"? It's like "the one tree over there is really nice".

This game is unfinished, and doesn't appeal to me at all.

This is a game that I will not play.

I return to (a still rather bugged) Ironfront Liberation 1944, and if I wish to be shot dead by a guy with an AK with iron sight 400 meters away about 1 second after I peek out a window, I can play ARMA II. :-)

What are these game makers up to? It went downhill from Operation Flashpoint. Better technology. Better software. Worse games... go figure.

I would say that is evne more unrealistic than BF3/COD which I consider arcadegames. For something to be called a simulation, it needs to simulate something. AFAIK, only ballistics are simulated. Driving vehicles feels way worse and arcadish than in Arma 2 for example.

If you played previous versions, you should be used to the AI cheating when shooting by now. A machinegunner is more accurate from 500+ metres than a sniper. Standing up. Very realistic...or not.

The content? If it isn't made by the community...well, you'll get bored within the week. The weapons ingame, theres like 5 of em, just different models or extensions. You have the MX-platform and the Katiba-platform (main assault rifles) and 5 variations of em, some sniper rifles, 2-3 AT and AA launchers and thats pretty much it. Bare minimum.

I bought the Alpha version. It was crap back then, beta version, well, at least it ran on my machine, release is on par with beta. Half the FPS compared to Arma 2 I'd say. Sure, Arma 3 looks better but does that matter when it is unplayable, running at 5 FPS? In SP with 100 AI I'm getting 10-25 FPS, in MP I'm lucky if I get more than 13 FPS. It is usually around 5-10 FPS. In Arma 2 I have 20+ FPS at highest settings in MP.

You are getting a beta version here. Content is coming later, campaign, weapon or two, aircrafts etc

Stick to Arma 2 if you know whats good for you.

BIS maintains that this game is like "fine wine" that "ages well" when actually it's more like cheap wine that you need to take home and mix with fruit juice and a pound of sugar to be in any way drinkable. Arma 3 is yet another great concept that in practice is totally undermined and destroyed by what is either laziness or incompetence from the developers. Wait a year from now. Maybe the modders will fix this lazy incompetent mess and Arma 3 will be a playable game like Arma 2. Until then, just play Arma 2

A lot of people lead reviews by saying this game "has potential"... which is a really polite way of admitting that, right now, it absolutely sucks. It also does not reflect well on the game or on segments of its fanbase that well-deserved criticism is met with accusations of being a "Call of Duty" fan or a console kiddy or other supposed slurs on the critic's intelligence. I've been playing this series since Flashpoint and y'know, it's always been bug-ridden, poorly implemented, and heavily dependent on its modders to even be playable- BUT the series has been just good enough to be worth the aggravation and massive time-sink necessary to make it work... until now.

The AI is horrible. For a game that involves realism in combat, where damage is more realistic and is dependent on squad tactics, the AI NEEDS to be competent if not excellent. Instead, the AI is incapable of navigating the terrain without getting stuck, incapable of responding effectively to fire and totally lost inside of buildings - no, literally, lost inside. God help you if your AI decides to use a grenade because he'll just kill himself.

The "Action menu" is STILL in the game and has been combined with environmental add actions that are even worse than in previous games. Face a door and click the action menu key... now watch as you transition to your handgun instead of opening the door because the action triggers are inconsistently placed by an incompetent dev team. This has been a major problem since OFP and it's actually worse now.

You will lose many many many games, not because you made a mistake or were unlucky, or for legit gameplay reasons, but because the AI is totally- and I mean totally- incapable of doing what the game *depends* on it to do.

The devs have taken to claiming ARMA 3 is a "toolbox" (when they're not insisting it's a game not a simulation- or conversely, that it's actually a simulation not a game- what they call their game depends on which set of their errors you're pointing out) in defense of it lacking a campaign. Fine. But what you get for "tools" is laughable- there's a handful of armor, vehicles and equipment, but it's basically just re-skinned copy-and-pastes between factions. Basically everyone shares assets with superficial cammo differences.

Did you think ARMA 2 had bad optimization? Well, the dev team topped itself with ARMA 3 being even clunkier, slower and more bloated. Seriously, everything about this game/simulation when it comes to optimization looks like a rough draft of code rather than a finished product. It will slam even high-end machines to a halt because of poor usage routines, bad scripting, and other lazy shortcuts.

What about mods? Well the modding community is a brilliant one, we've got some really really good people who really should get credit for making ARMA remotely popular (or playable). But BIS is depending on modders, not to expand the game, but basically to make the game WORK. No matter how good the mod team is, it's still less efficient and effective to try to fix a broken AI with an addon as opposed to fixing the core code. BIS is content to be lazy and coast on its unpaid modders, but there's only a handful of people who work on AI/game core issues (a lot work on maps and missions, but core realism/errors are another matter) and they seem pretty tired of doing this stuff. It's also a pretty sh*t thing for BIS to do, to release a full priced game with barely any content, crappy optimization, an outdated engine and terrible AI- but then expect the modders to bail them out of trouble. Well... maybe it ain't gonna happen this time. Hell, maybe they can't pull it off this time, even if they want to.

Some have said this can't be done, but DayZ just announced they're doing just that. Tossing the old engine for a fresh new shiny engine. So if DayZ can do it, way can BI? Joint Operations from Novalogic released in 2004 is a far superior game in nearly every single aspect except graphics. Just after the game was released, the dev team focused solely on optimizing the game and did a great job of it. This is why I say A3 is just laughable. I am done supporting this incompetent excuse for a game company and watch them laugh and sip coffee while their game runs like ****
Also, they just released an "add-on" which should have just been free, but they sell it for 2 or 3 dollars and claim they sold over 1 million copies, this would give the impression that theres a new fresh injection of cash in the dev coffers for optimizing the game, no? They release an update recently 1.24 I believe and it's actually made the game worse. BI is a joke, I have zero respect for them as a game company.

The maps are huge and well made, the 'Zeus' and the 'Altis Life' mods are verry cool but it depends on the community.

For those who dont know what ZEUS is:
Zeus is a Gamemode that has been put into Arma 3 for players to have a dynamic and custom playing experience. No mission is the same, since the Game Master (Zeus, controlled by a player) generates the missions. Practically Zeus is a live Game Editor with players inside it that play your missions/Szenarios

Altis Life is fun to, but since Hosters like "Nitrado" and others provide these servers with small prices and payment methodes everyone can use, Arma is flooded by Servers full of, well I would call them "Douches". For those who already know what Altis life is you will probably know what I am talking about. The most Altis life Servers employ 6-8 year old Whitelisted Cops and dont really care about the players, all they want is Donations and all of your money!

Enough about these two Gamemodes. Lets talk about the other Gamemodes. Well.... They are fun, but then the Arma 3 logic ruins everything. (Here I ran out of critic)

What I personally dislike about this game is the lack of cars and content. In Arma 2 your were trashed with cars and in Arma 3 you wish that you would have as much cars as in Arma 2.

Not sure what Bohemia Interactive has done with this game but I dont get it...
In my opinion I think the game mechanics are broken. IR-Flares to distract guided rockets dont bring anything, they hit you anyways, whatever you'll do.

They should have stuck to what works in other games. I don't want to remap 50 keys to make the game playable or get used to a completely different (and worse) setup.

The inventory screen is also pretty bad. There's no option to change vests and keep the items. You manually have to re-equip all items on the vest. I also couldn't figure out how to combine mags, if it's even possible. The crosshair jumps to targets by itself, sometimes half a screen away, which is confusing as hell.

The highly praised graphics engine is only average. Some nice high-resolution textures for the soldiers, but lots of texture pop in everywhere which is extremely annoying. The shadows have way too sharp edges.

Too many things just don't feel right in Arma 3. I'd really like a good tactical FPS with big maps, but this isn't it.

The community in all its loyalty - is a bunch is whining tossers - so Bohemia just throws its hands in the air and sez: **** it, just make it 3rd person AND 1st person, that'll make em shut up...

So like DayZ its an unfocused mess that tries to be a 3rd person and 1st person game like skyrim instead of a milsim. In turn, that ****s up the AI both singleplayer AND online play (hard), they use 3rd person as a crutch for faults in the AI, sound system and (still) clunky movement systems. They still haven't figured out basic cover mechanics for enemy AI and urban/building warfare strictly out of the question for AI, is this ****ing 1997?!

Give it another year and the community will add wind, radios, better maps, AI (basically they will fix the game by 2017)... or Boho will prolly kick some money off the DayZ pile to another couple of talented modders and crush their dreams too. The milsim set are a loyal but ultimately fickle bunch and will jump ship to any better spec'd milsim should one become available. That 'Realtime Interactive' thing looked promising....

This game is worth every penny. I can't stop playing, it's so interesting and addicting. Some people say negative things about the game, so here are some reasons that may change their opinions:

Lack of content - Remember that Arma 3 is also a sandbox where you create your own war. Even though I wouldn't say that it lacks content by default, if you find what you have not enough you could easily purchase some DLCs or simply go to the workshop where there are thousands of free user-made content.

Slow or low FPS - Remember that performance usually depends on your computer and its hardware. Running Arma 3 and any game really on ultra settings on a chromebook and then blaming the game for "not running smoothly" is not a good plan. If you see that it is slow, pull down the video settings a bit, and try to find the "sweet spot".

Lack of detail/poor maps - This depends on your hardware, video settings and what you think is "rich detail". If you have bad hardware, and your settings are set to low, objects would usually have less detail and therefor everything would seem less realistic and would lack details. Also, remember that Arma 3 is a war simulator, not a photography game. I would consider Arma 3 rich-detailed though.

Unrealistic sounds/movements - This problem is extremely easy to fix, and if people who criticize the game for that reason would simply search for a solution, it would get fixed in minutes. You can download full sound packs for free, which contain super-realistic effects. Unrealistic movements are caused because the AI level is probably low.

Vehicles and weapons all similar - I have never noticed that they are similar. Some factions use civilian vehicles and share weapons and clothing with others, but that doesn't make "everything" the same. Each faction has something unique. Each vehicle makes different sounds, has different textures and characteristics.

Bad interface/GUI - Some people seem to say that the user interface is hard to use or see or is just not intuitive. Simply go over to settings and you can customize sizes, fonts, colors and so on. If all your settings are correctly set, then there should be no problem with that.

Not comfortable to play - Some people also said that remembering all hotkeys which are required to play efficiently is quite hard. They say that they can't properly "control" the player. Simply go over to settings, and then controls. This contains all hotkeys and shortcuts. Just change them to the ones you remember or are used to from other games, and everything should be fine.

Before criticizing a game, make sure that it's actually the games fault, not something else's.

As for my opinion, I think that this game has an excellent engine, community, idea, storyline, workshop and user interface. I can't find anything to criticize. A great step from the previous version.

Thank you Bohemia Interactive for creating such a wonderful game!

This is all said in order to frame the foundation for the score of this game rather than rating it on false expectations.

    Pros:
    1. This is a military sandbox game. The end outcome on your enjoyment is all up to the player. The players just need to learn how to use the tools provided by the community and the game, and then know what they want out of the game.

    2. Realism. Excellent! Mods help make it phenomenal.

    3. Customization. Endless.

    4. Multiplayer. Co-op and PvP play of whatever you want. To maximize my experience, I found one of many dedicated communities that don't require your life, but consistent enough to enjoy team-play and teaching how to better understand and play the game. This is no plug-and-play. Much like those MOBA games, this requires some dedicated learning prior to playing (well).

    5. Graphics. They are good. Not great, but good. Fits in well to increase immersion and realism.

    Cons:

    1. Optimization. The game engine seems to be the blame for any gameplay performance. Most AAA titles are bottle-necked by GPU, this game relies heavily on a strong CPU, and much less a GPU. Hopefully BIStudios can start on a brand new engine for their next game. At the same time, the game is playable even at 20 frames per minute.

    2. Learning curve. STEEP. Like I said, playing with a community is highly recommended to learn the game in order to better enjoy it. The game comes with some tutorials, but they are geared on learning the numerous key bindings and less on learning how to use them to your advantage. The again, war has so many different scenarios that training can really only be learned on the field.

Unfortunately, I believe that ARMA 3 is held back due to the rather OUTDATED engine. Animations, movement, driving of vehicles etc. still feels a little bit off. Multiplayer does not work very well either. It is vital that the next installment in the series is built on a new, updated engine. That will be great for future installments. I would give this game 8.5 or 9.0. 10 is way to much. This is, more or less, mostly due to the technical problems with the game.

Don't expect this game to run well if you want a solid 60 FPS, it will always find a way to ruin your performance. I'm constanlty monitoring hardware usage and ArmA III lags even while not loading my CPU or GPU above 70% - and I've been running this game since 2013 up until now on two pretty dope-at-the-time rigs (including running the game from a 6 Gb/s SATA SSD and then an NVMe SSD). I've tried all kinds of performance tweaks - launch parameters, custom memory allocators, messing with in-game settings, edits in .CFG and .INI files, unparking CPU cores, changing process priority & etc. All they do is give you a tad of extra FPS and nothing more. No tweak will change the fact that ArmA III uses an obsolete overcoded engine with no proper multicore support - it runs "simulation", the most important rendering stage, on a single thread which needs to be around at least 6 GHz if you want persistent 60+ FPS - and where do you buy that 6 GHz CPU BTW?

The [fecal] BIS engine is the bottleneck. But wait! The DayZ team, some amateurs behind a mod, despite their disappointing failure to deliver us the actual finished DayZ game did manage to make a generally reverse-compatible and much more lag-free ArmA engine: EnFusion. It seems though we're not going to get a global EnFusion update for ArmA III because BIS prefers to milk more money via DLCs intead of fixing their messy product in the first place - it's a thing of reputation and honor which are just as important as money (those in 2019+ go ask Disney or EA about the value of reputation).

On the other note I don't really like some core features that the devs have heavily invested their time in. Underwater ops and lots of square miles of underwater terrain? That’s a waste-of-time-feature and exactly as boring and unused by players as you can imagine. The 2035 pseudo-futuristic setting? Feels like bogus pulp fiction that is unrelatable and unbelievable. Many western NATO and eastern CSAT vehicles use exactly same armaments and turrets: remote controlled weapon stations, artillery turrets, AA turrets. Merkava Mk.IV and T-14 Armata lack their active protection systems that are already the next big thing in armored warfare. The actual future technology in the setting is very lackluster. Obvious 2035 things such as scopes with built-in rangefinders or thermal goggles weren't even included in the game until many years have passed. ADATS-like vehicles, OICW-like guns, triton oxygen mask, visible laser aiming modules still aren't there just as the functionality of in-game "google"-glasses. Something more exotic like smart bullets, active spectral matching camouflage? Electrolasers, active denial system or other realistic 2035 directed energy weapons? Nope and nope.

Half of the time you’ll find ArmA III servers with RHS Escalation mod that brings up contemporary American, Russian, Serbian and other generic armies because players do need a more believable and relatable military environment than the BIS 2035 BS. I personally think that a near future Israel vs. Iran conflict would have been a still fresh but much cooler setting for this game.

There are good things of course. The game wields noticeable improvements over ArmA II: the new inventory system is marvellous, radio comms sound much more like a live chat, the actual physics of objects now sort of works, generally the visuals, animations and sounds are vastly enhanced.

But is that really enough when most of the time the "game" runs like a military themed slide presentation because it's purely unoptimised by BIS indian coders (that are beaten at their engine job by DayZ modders)? As of 2019 the game has a lot of vanilla, DLC and mod content to suit your needs as a military simulation. Except that one thing that's equally important - steady performance. If you have a high end gaming rig with a 5+ GHz CPU or you're okay with low FPS or you're okay with bad graphics to increase that FPS (specifically view distance) - you can probably enjoy ArmA III. But I'm not one of those people so I don't recommend this game, especially considering how BIS prefers DLC cash grabs to porting the game to EnFusion and Vulkan that could fix its performance issues.

I can spawn 500 AI on the Altis map outside the viewdistance and it still hogs another 30-50 FPS or so while the game works fluently on highest settings with 60-100 FPS. I do think most of the reviews posted prior to the last few major updates need to be removed as they give a false idea of the metacritic score. Most complain about the lack of content, which from the point Steam workshop went live, is a ridiculous lie as there are thousands of SP, Co-op and MP missions available as well as a solid campaign for those only into single player gaming. The original reason for Arma 3 being released early was because of delays following the arrest of two of the main developers who were arrested for spying after doing research for the game. They wanted to get the game out to the community, mainly to showcase some of the things we could expect to see in the game once it was fully released as well as get feedback from the community via the early access project. All reviews prior to 2014 are totally skewed and should be wiped or ignored as they do give a false impression of the game. The metacritic score is much lower than it should be because of these early scores.

This is not a run and gun game like the Call of Duty, Men of Honor or Battlefield series, its a serious military simulation where you need to employ military tactics otherwise you're dead meat. Get shot and if its not an insta-kill you need to use a medic kit or if in co-op or multi-player get someone to heal you. Any injuries will reduce your capacity to shoot accurately. Shooting in ArmA 3 is a real treat, with excellent bullet physics and weapon sights that you need to adjust as the distance to your target increases, so as to take account of bullet drop; all go to add to the realism of this game.

If you want to experience ArmA 3 as it should be, find a good group of friends or a good clan who play the game seriously and you'll find out how good this game really is.

The modding community is brilliant and are one of the best you'll find in a game franchise anywhere (except maybe the sub sim and flight sim communities). Check out the armaholics site for details of many mods and scenarios as well as their forums, or just go to the steam workshop, where you'll find most modifications and scenarios.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the is the best game I have ever bought for my pc. I think ridiculous, most of the critics have no place to even review this title as they are evidently clueless about this particular title. If you criticize Arma for its "lack of content", then you have no idea what you're reviewing, the Arma series has survived since its first game almost a decade ago, never because of it's "rich content"? It's the incredible platform it brings that allows the extremely active and dedicated community to work on, the fact that DayZ was an example to show how it revived the sales of a 3-4 year old game back up to the top of the steam sales supports that. ARMA 3, for anyone who knows the series, is a giant leap, in performance, in graphics, and in game mechanics. Now it's up to the community, like they did with Arma 2, to bring its full potential, I for one am happy to be part of it, and am patiently waiting for more, both from Bohemia and the modders.

Frankly, I don't even want to see this title on Metacritic, it has no place here to be reviewed by people who clearly don't have a clue. Far too many people expect the fluidity of Battlefield only to find themselves in a completely different realm, while DayZ brought the series to the light of the mainstream, which can only be a good thing as Bohemia evidently used extra profit and poured it into this new title, it has also brought in a lot of bad apples into the community, expecting the wrong things, demanding the wrong things, and criticizing it for not delivering. Review this for what it is, not impose your unrealistic expectation based on other titles onto this

It's a war simulation where you are dropped on an island with a heavy military presence, no matter what all those allies will become enemies. There's a main storyline that you can follow. I break off into the open world armed with an assault rifle salvaging better WMD's and single handedly take out ever enemy occupied areas crippling their infrastructure. Then finish up the story.

Players can be tactical and cunning. I've seen teams place ghillie suit snipers all across a mountainside in a tree line, while a single player baits other players into moving around a town and chasing him. Just so much to do. You can find endless amounts of content on workshop as well. Anything from maps to mods to missions.

I enjoyed the campaign, regardless of how difficult it was sometimes because it doesn't put you in this super-soldier slaughter all your enemies position, it puts you in this fight for survival. I think it's a very down to earth game and I highly enjoy the nitty-gritty combat. The community is pretty good, and you can find all types of different people, from hackers to milsim units, the community is awesome. The modders are the ones that keep this game alive, and just offer up countless mods for you to play and enjoy, including, but nowhere limited to, RHS (which offers weapons and vehicles used by modern-day soldiers), ACE (an advanced combat environment addon, which adds a whole lot of different things like better bullet drop, a proper medical system, and just a bunch of other stuff), Operation Trebuchet (A mod which adds Halo gear into the game. It's extremely fun playing as a spartan with a jetpack in this game), Star Wars (self explanatory), and so so much more.

Now, Arma 3 is also horrible in some regards, like lag (I surpass the recommended PC specs by a fair bit, with a GTX1070 graphics card, I7-6700 CPU, and 16GB of ram, which 15 of that 16 is usable) and the lag is just horrible sometimes, I'm assuming because of the mods I typically run. There's also underwater combat, which I don't find enjoyable, as there's only 1 gun you can use underwater, and to me, it just plain sucks. There's also the complicated control scheme which gets even more complicated with more mods (during an op I was doing with my friends, a few of my addons used a single key to do something, so whenever I'd use my jetpack [Halo mod] I would bring up 3-4 different menus) and of course, it's buggy, very buggy, which can be annoying sometimes, but other times it's absolutely hilarious.

Honestly, this is a great game, and it's a lot less clunky than the previous Arma in my opinion, and it's a good starting point for any newcomers to jump into the game and learn, which takes a while. I may have 1700 hours at the moment, but I just can't drive a single mile without blowing up due to my own fault, however, my piloting skills are much better, and it's really easy to understand some aspects of the game that may not be clear to others, and other aspects will elude you forever. Their most recent DLC was lacking, but the rest of the DLCs are awesome, and I love how open they were about the first 8 or 9 DLCs, where you could use everything from the DLCs, except you can't drive the vehicles (only ride in them) and you can't use the maps (if they added one). Bohemia Interactive have done extremely well with this game, and I think it's worth the price if you're looking to sink a lot of time into the game and meet a lot of cool and good people. There's also a whole lot of veterans that play this game, so if you're looking for people who know their stuff, then this game is definitely for you.

The mission editor offers endless possibilities for you to create your missions, Like defending a town from an invasion, a special ops mission, or just a multiplayer map for your friends to enjoy. If you are more into this mission-making, then you could learn scripting (which I struggle with, but at least I know the basics).

The weapons and vehicles featured in the make the base game feel a bit stale, but the mods make up for it. I have played all the previous games in this series, and if you want more current-gen weapons than I would suggest you download a few weapon mods from the workshop.

The campaign is very plain in my opinion and is very forgettable apart from some iconic characters, But it follows the same story as every other modern shooter which is US “good” and everyone else “bad”, but I can’t blame the developers (they need to follow the trends). But that’s not the only issue with the campaign. The campaign gets very difficult to understand from the start and it is very hard to keep track of what's happening and why it's happening. On top of that, the devs give you little to no freedom in how to complete the missions, If you go out of the boundary of some missions to approach the objective from a different angle, the game will sometimes blow you up. And worst of all, in the end, the plot remains open-ended. The game doesn’t explain what happened afterward but simply slaps a “The End” on top of the black screen. If you are more into the campaigns, I would suggest you play Arma Armed Assault or Arma Cold War Assault.

The graphics of the game are great for a game released in 2013, However, the game seems to have massive performance issues on high-end hardware as well. The multiplayer is fantastic, It has a great variety of game modes to offer like Roleplay, Deathmatch, KOTH .etc. It even has servers that are dedicated to realistic military operations. If you are more into realism then you should consider joining a unit.

The gameplay is decent also. However, the gunplay is very different from COD and Battlefield series, so you would need to get used to it. The driving in this game is okay, not great but okay. The flying is very simple as the ARMA series does not focus on air to air combat or dogfights. But still gives you a decent experience. The running and different stances in this game are great. However, I have only one complaint about the gameplay which is the lack of a cover system, sure you can lean in the game but taking cover and firing from cover seems a bit off in this game, and as far as I know, there are no mods which can offer a better experience. AI is somewhat improved, The AI finally knows how to properly take cover and drive. But the AI still seems to have aimbot as it can headshot you 600m away with a 5.56 Rifles using an iron sight while you are hiding in a bush during the night. You still need mods to make the AI work properly. The weapon customization in this game is revolutionary even when compared to modern titles, and the customization is not limited to multiplayer only. But you can also customize your weapons in the single-player and the mission editor. The weapon customizations include bipods, scopes, suppressors, flashlights. He*k you can even put a 16X scope on an SMG.

The graphics of the game are great for a game released in 2013, However, the game seems to have massive performance issues on high-end hardware as well. So loading up hundreds of objects at the same time in the mission editor could be impractical if you have an HDD, For an optimal experience, I would suggest using an SSD and at least 8 GB of RAM. However, I have seen people playing this game on weaker hardware (such as a Core 2 Duo). The lightning and shadow effects in this game look great to me, However, you could use different mods to make the game look more beautiful.

As for the sounds, It depends, as the environmental sounds are a nice touch, but something about the sound of the guns is a bit off to me. That’s why I use mod weapons only in this game. In my opinion, the sounds of guns in ARMA 2 were the best.

The community of ARMA series is great, they are very helpful and they are very accepting of new members. There are some great scripters out there as well. I would suggest you check out BI Forums.

TL;DR: The game is great overall, the campaign can be confusing and difficult to understand at times. The gameplay is great, AI is not. The weapon customizations are great. The graphics are decent for 2013 standards. The multiplayer is great. The mod support is great. The community is great also. A must buy.

Overall this game is a solid 9/10 from me.

Short Campaign, nags you to buy Expensive DLCs, and not strictly realistic really, if it wasn't for the incredible modding community this series hosts, Arma 3 would've never had such an enduring and rich community.

the first sp campaign (the east wind) is great but the rest of the dlc ones are rubbish. However the mp is perfect for a sandbox milsim, so good that this 2013 game still holds up with newer games like squad. This is only improved with mods that can change this gritty realism game into dayz (epoch) or halo (operation trebuchet).

A good game clearly, but unless you have hours of time to spare, or you are prepared to mod the single player campaign to “invincibility” I would avoid. Thankfully I picked it up for £7 in the sale. Glitchy, hard, and too realistic.

A little hard to get into but more than worth it. It's of course more fun with friends, but you can get into pretty much any community on any server. Thanks to all the modders there are plenty of different play styles how you can play this game.
One can jump into e.g. altis life and have a really fun role playing experience or one could try out King of the Hill or Wasteland and just enjoy

The gun play is probably by far the most fun in this game and the way the devs supported it over several years (and they still do) is just amazing.

Although it is out for quite a while already it is definitely worth it to give it a try.

Thirst of all, yes its bad optimized and the base game includes zero content, if don't own it on steam (This is no sponsorship and I don't get any money for this). The DLC's help the game and make more realistic. REALISM is a big thing in Arma 3, if you think you are good, you're dead, if you think you can run, you're dead, if you think you can speed run, you are dead! You need time to understand the mechanics and the key bindings. If you are a Call of Duty or Battlefield player, don't buy this, this will be to realistic for you, but if you want to die over and over and want a rewarding feeling when you kill enemy's, then you should buy this. If you buy it, then you should buy at least 2-3 DLC's to make the base game better. 9/10 IGN Expand

If the game is alive, it's because of the community's effort to create mods, etc. Bohemia Interactive looks like Bethesda: they release the game full of problems and let the community solve this. I have the most hours in this game than any game I have ever played before. Ask me in 2013 I would give this game a 10/10 easily... ask me now and I still give it an 8/10. The reduction of points only come from an aging engine that is certainly starting to show some wrinkles. There's something about Bohemia's world-building that inspires people. Importantly though, Arma 3's vanilla content now stands on equal footing with those third-party inspirations. It's still a little rough around the edges, but it's a darned impressive package nonetheless.

With Arma 3, Bohemia made a big step towards a unified platform for its military shooters, but at the same time took two steps back in regards to actual game content. Only the most hardcore fans will enjoy Arma 3 in its current form.
