Yes, the story mode is disappointing and the the combat system is not the most innovative, but I don't care. The most important part of the game is the sandbox mode and that is definitely the best of the series. It is also great that there is a multiplayer again.

I was able to play it for about 2 hours. After that it just keeps crashing to desktop if i try to start it.

gotta say my ratings is from a really noob RTS gamer. Haven't played RTS in years, and found this one to be beuatiful and fun, but unmercyful with new players. I just couldnt keep up with the story mode. Just too much to do and too little help or guidance

Jumping straight from one of the earlier Anno games (1440 or something) I was pleasantly surprised to find it isn’t as intimidating to get going in this game. It starts out like most city builders and slowly develops the complexity as you learn the game. Very pleasantly surprised, and graphics are awesome aswell as gameplay.

In my opinon, Anno 1800 is the best game of it's franchise. The story mode is not the best, but the sandbox and online mode are amazing. A very clear recommendation to everyone. Maybe it is even the best city building and strategy game

It's just a matter of personal taste, but I found this more frustrating than fun. Depends on the kinds of games you like, obviously, but for me there was just far too much micromanaging in real time, trying to juggle numerous islands, maps, etc. I also found the AI utterly annoying (sink half a dozen of a pirate's ships, for example, and they expect you to pay *them* for a cease fire). The campaign gets tired pretty fast, and the expeditions and quests soon become very dull. Perhaps the most frustrating thing is that you have to understand the late stages of the game at the outset, in order to plan your city, but the planning tool only allows you to "blueprint" the buildings you currently have access to. So, you end up (for example), having completely blocked the route from your oil wells to the coast by the time you reach the "Engineer" level. So, have to demolish masses of houses, farms, etc., to make rail connections.

Some people will love it, of course, but to me it felt more like a job than a game.

I've been waiting for this kind of game since forever. I love age of empires, C&C red alert, Empire earth, Caesar, sim city. it's like they mixed all with impressive graphics and physics engine.
as 38 years old person I feel too old to learn a new game, that's why I'm not playing any game since WoW 2012. it took me 2 hours to figure it out how to play this but I loved it.

Positives first. The game does look gorgeous, there is multiplayer after 2205 removed it, combat and AI opponents are back on the map and the Story actually feels like a story again and will last you a good 15 hours. I also like the new newspaper-Propaganda System (as long as its not locking content behind day one DLC). So essentialy Anno returned to the state it was in before 2205. ExceptPositives first. Anno 2070 is still the peak of the Franchise. Where 2070 had different Missions, unique AI with different goals and even different approaches to gameplay with different Factions, this game has none of that. There is only Sandbox or a Sandbox with some extra Quests that calls itself "Campaign". All AIs are essentially the same with the only thing differing being their expansion speed and Aggression. Diiferent factions with unique Buildings, Perks and downsides? Gone. There are not that many ships, Planes and Submarines are gone completely with nothing to replace them with. Research is gone too, forcing you to rely on random item drops or purchases. Essentially, alomst a Decade later, Anno is back at the state it was in with Anno 1404. The games asthetic matches 1404 too. Except Anno 1404 is on Steam, costs less and doesn't require you to buy 2 SEASON PASSES plus day one DLC to get the full experience. Shame on you, Ubisoft.

In Summary, buy 1404 on Steam instead and look up a graphics overhaul mod or buy 2070 on Uplay and look up how to fix the Autopatcher bug.

Just like in 2205, challenge scenario maps, factions and rotating world events are prominently missing again. Plus the campaign is even shorter than in 2205 and much more boring. In fact, boredom suffused the game in general for me. I basically stopped playing once I finished the short campaign. Can't really put my finger on it, it plays well and all the tried-and-tested, fan-beloved features are here. But maybe that's it - Anno 1800 feels like a very safe bet. After the radical departure from the traditional formula with 2205 fans were calling out for a return to the roots. Problem is Blue Byte did that and very little else. There are a few new features like expeditions but they can't carry the weight of the game on their own. On the whole Anno 1800 plays like a "best of" the previous games. I suppose the additional content that should come in the course of the next year will make the game miles better, just like it happened for 2205. But I doubt we'll ever get any more factions, challenge scenarios or rotating world events and the campaign will stay lame forever. I admit, I wanted Blue Byte to return to the roots too but after playing Anno 1800 all I can say - screw going back to the roots. If I want to play the beloved old formula I boot up 1404 or 2070 again, both of which are still eminently playable. Next time, Blue Byte, give us something new and exciting. Expand

    * UI is terrible (especially the quest and notification bar is worse then in Anno 1404)

Slowly building up your small city into a huge empire just makes fun in this game. Beautiful looking with many details and also a great soundtrack. Besides many positive aspects the game lacks in the campaign, which is quite generic and they surely could have done better, also the battle system - now without landbattles as in Anno 1404 - might not be everyones taste. Taking those 2 main things in consideration with the technical issues some player seem to have it is a 8, if they fix the technical problems it could be an 8,5-9. In my opinion Anno 1800 takes over the title from Anno 1404 of beeing the best in the whole Anno Series. Edit: What might be worth noting for some ppl that there are no additional scenarios like in previous Anno parts Expand

Since there is only one save slot you can't roll back the game state, the only option to restart the whole campaign with the hope you will not hit the bug again. It kills the joy in the game.

Would love, but I cant review this game without talking about Uplay. It is a requirement for this game, no more Steam support. This decision probably helps to improve some financial report but also kicks out from the platform anyone without infinite patience setting up Uplay. The biggest difficulty in this game is to fight your way through the ridiculous payments/install system of Uplay. Prepare your evening for this nasty first round.

How much I try to love this game, I'm disappointed.

You can ask yourself why to buy this game? Why now? You still have anno 1404. Well, the answer is simply. Anno 1800 is a worthy successors of Anno 1404, it is somethings lots of fans were waiting for and industrial revolution has never looked so magical.

If you like city builders and want to be relaxed by creating complex production/supply chains this game is for your. Every click takes you one step closer to creating industrial marvel. I hope that future DLCs and additions will make game even bigger and better.

It's a really unique experience, building your own industrialization empire. It's my second game of the series after 1404 and it's really hard to stop playing. There is always something left to optimize or to improve and I know I'm going to spend a ridiculous amount of time into Anno 1800. The soundtrack serves the game as well. A greatly crafted masterpiece I'm going to play for the next decade.

What's even more impressive is that everything they've added so far feels essential, not just pointless filler. The only negative thing I can say is that I wish Blue Byte released more complete games at launch, instead of taking another 2 years and 200$ on the price tag to complete them. Still, I can't complain too much when all the DLC feels so high quality. Expand

I have about 200 hours in each of the old type anno games. 115hours on Anno 1800

But it also has a few flaws I hope get patched.

-Quest bugs like game breaking once. And not one of them. (Campain mode)

-Issues with speed and how the game run, but it is far better then the older anno games.
I can now play for 10 hours without reboot and crash.

-Crashes they are just a few now then before, but they still happen but you can see and feel it comming so saving and rebooting the game fix that.
But you can have issues like I did my game auto saved and then crashed. That did something to my auto saves so I had to use a manuel save. Not a issue for me as I save often.
    CTRL+S = God

-Ship problems your ships tend to not lissten to you when you do stuff.
Example: Group of 8 sail to that island. 5 of them go 3 just stop random on the route. Same can happen to 3.

-Issues with crossing between the old world and the new world. I personaly liked the fact that anno 1404 had North and south on the same map. Less swaping and better overview.
But in Anno 1800, your ships can get stuck then trying to cross to the new world or back to the old.
And if they do not get stuck, pirate or npc will camp the zone swap area where you ships comes and goes.. on both sides.. new and old.

-Trade. In anno 1404, I do remember that if you choose a ship to load 3 diffrent types and 1 was full it never took the other spots, it just didn't take the full material.
On Anno 1800 on the other hand, when 1 stack hits full.. the ship just loads more there fore overloading and not getting diffrent types..

-Noticed issues with loading and unloading goods saying no space and out of material.
Still both are good. Deleting the trade route and remaking it then its good for a while.

-No more armies, only boats and diplomacy.
I find this abit dumb, now you take out a island and BOOM its gone..

Many of these issues are small and you can work them out, some you cannot and you need to load.
But this game is about managment and controll.. I feel very little controll. But the game looks and feel good. Best building anno until now, I love it and I rebuild my cities alot!
I hope the new content update and the DLC's will help on the issue parts.

I still love the game, but these are the things that are making me bored of it.
If the bugs and issues are fixed I give the game 10/10.
Even tho I dislike the map splitting and no armies.

And I still enjoy it to day! and the Music is 10/10 most of the time! Good work Dynamedion!

I have some nostalgic feelings towards Anno, when I remember playing Anno 1602 as a child. I like to explore the world with my ship, see the market collect the ressources step by step with little carts and building a stable economy to rule the world.

Anno 1800 instantly gave me the good old Anno feeling again.
And (probably thanks to the strong bond to the community from beginning through "Anno Union") there are so many features I did not even know I would want or need.

Easy overview of how many XX - buildings needed for the production circle.
You have a clock next to the building overview, which shows you how much time this building needs to produce 1 product. You can easily check in advance if there timer is the same for all buildings in this production chain, or if you need more of a kind for being productive.

    Blueprints.
Genius feature for planning your city and your production chains.

Range indicator (church, firefighters, police station...) through different green-shades on the pathways.

    ...

Even though I did not play Anno for a longer time, nearly everything in Anno 1800 was self-explaining, so I did not need any instructions.

Everything is so beautifull and detailed, you can watch the city for minutes and forget what you wanted to build.

Even when you allready played for a while, you still have to optimise and change everything.
In the mid-game you will be able to establish electricity in your city - and bring oil to the factories by train.

I am pretty sure the few things that aren´t 100% great will be patched soon, so there is nothing that´s stopping me to give a 10/10. (right now it´s a 9.5/10) ;-)

(Coop is allready announced to be implemented soon, and the diplomacy skills of the AI could be updated easily. The campaign is not as big as it could be, but that´s not what I bought the game for)

This ANNO 1800 combines all the strengths of the previous versions. We supply our population - which can be further developed over 7 population levels - partly through complex production chains, but which are self-explanatory and require a certain logistical skill with increasing playing time. Annoholics of the first hour as well as new discoverers will have their true joy. We explore the Old World and start expeditions and discover unexplored terrain ...

It is also the most extensive anno in history, which even beats ANNO 2205 in it, but makes many things much better. The long-term motivation is almost limitless - the longer you play, the more complex and motivating the game becomes. After all, we are in the age of the industrial revolution. And once you have "discovered" electricity after a few hours of playing, you can ask yourself how you can integrate it.

The attention to detail is boundless. You will have a lot of fun, just watch your companies, your workers in the fields and your population celebrate. Everything has been lovingly and variedly designed in beautiful graphics. It is simply beautiful to look at!

Conclusion: no matter if beginner or professional - this ANNO 1800 will make you overjoyed. It is the most beautiful and biggest year in history. It doesn't quite reach the story of ANNO 1404, but the campaign is definitely worth it. In addition, a multiplayer mode for up to 4 players is finally integrated again. Friends: access, populate and be happy with ANNO 1800.

I was sad that I didn't know that I could change AI players or even disable them by right-click... I wouldn't play with that fat leady but now... She's gone ;-)

Nice thing is also possibility to walk the streets! And I don't know why I have learned this from somebody movie but not the game! :(

Best Anno game since 1404, it has got the same addiction factor, better graphics and sound. The fact you have to balance your workforce out to make sure all your carefully set up production chains don't stumble and fall, is a small but smart design decision.

Very good stuff. Campaign is lacking and I would of preferred more variety with factions, but overall, Anno 1800 is a solid instalment in the franchise. Comprehensive resource mechanics, great depth in settlement construction, and the newly added ability to send ships on expeditions makes this one of the most feature complete city builders to date.

J'ai dû recharger une très ancienne sauvegarde, et c'est très gênant quand on passe des heures à régler les choses au millimètre.

It’s a good Anno game, but far from great as 1404 was. Despite the similarities in setting to 1404 its baffling to see how much the predecessor got better than this new entry. A shame really, since 1800 has the potential core to be a worthy follow up, but falls short on too many sides

However I think the down side is, that the gameplay is too slow. You need 10h+ to build a well working civilisation at the highest tech level. So every match is of epic length. And that’s is really the point, I always enjoyed the multiplayer part of Anno together with friends. I was upset that the last Anno was singleplayer only. But well, 1800 has Multiplayer, but if you start a match, be aware that you will need 10-15hr to “finish” a match. Together with 3 friends? Makes no sense to me. The “older” Anno games where like: “okay let’s play on Sunday afternoon”, and after 3-4hrs you had a highly advanced civilization, killed some CPU Foes and were about to figure out a plan how to annihilate your human friends from the map.

With the addition of needing all workers lvls the trusted anno formula was given an extra layer. As with all anno games the campaign is okay but that’s not why most people buy the game. Sandbox mode is where you will spend most of your time.

The starter difficulty options are fine for beginners, the jump from 1-2 is pretty big, the custom options are decent and in multiplayer with friends they will suffice. The options for your character are pretty limited but for me that’s a minor issue.

Let’s get started, like all anno games you start with getting your basic construction recourses and village going. However because of the split in workforce and luxury goods the complexity is slightly higher than previous annos ( 2200 doesn’t count). No longer will 1 massive population island work.

This adds something to the flavor of the game, you actually need people to work certain jobs. Personally this adds a feeling of realism and fun to the game. Having to juggle multiple islands across multiple continents isn’t easy but on lower difficulty levels it’s pretty forgiving.

There’s plenty of variety in products to produce and trade. Trade routes can get messy at a certain point. I think I failed more than once because I didn’t correctly use my trade routes. Or pirates simply sunk my ships.

The AI isn’t great, I play for the building aspect so it doesn’t bother me. Don’t except genius strategy or plays from them. They will on higher levels give you good competition for islands.

TLDR: good looking game with minor issues on lower end systems. Lots of variety in goods and production chains. However the AI is lackluster at best don’t expect much from it. Great as a city building type game but that’s about it.

    Score: 9
Explication: personally I feel like we have returned to the old anno formula, with updated graphics, better engine and improved gameplay. Yes I’m aware that the game is not perfect, however if you like building and figuring out how to supply and keep your city happy this game will keep you busy for a long time.

    - There's this annoying delay with quests and buying ships, when there has been a dialog window recently
    - The Ship AI is terrifying bad. The ships will chase anything forever, dying in enemy harbours (default stance)
--- They don't help each other when a ship literally next to them gets attacked at max range. (only in passive stance?)
    - The Enemy AI is practically non-existing. I don't get how a big company like ubisoft can release 7 Anno games and still not be able to program a half-decent enemy AI.
--- Basically the enemy plays by cheating their a** off, making any kind of strategy pointless.
    - Trains are super disappointing (if their announcement got you excited), the only thing they transport is oil

it is both the most difficult and rewarding city builder I have ever played to this day. Its sheer depth and intricacy are awe inspiring and extraordinarily difficult to maintain into the higher tiers as they get continually more complex as the tiers evolve in difficulty. I have put in 200 hours and despite all this im nowhere close to getting it all working perfectly. Frankly I wish that there was an even easier difficulty as they are all pretty harsh

that being said it does crash occasionally which is frustrating, but i just cant stop. its addicting and even though i can only be cash positive with propaganda articles I just want to go in and play a little more. If you could only pause and actually manipulate your cities and build in a useful manner the game would be much more satisfying. im constantly feeling harried to make a bunch of changes, and by the time i get done fixing one thing two others have gone wrong. Plus if your at higher tiers the 2 things are actually 4 because of the downstream production effects.

I bought this with the Ubisoft 20% Discount that you get for turning in your game points. So, I can say it was money well spend.
I already put 35 hours into the game and I plan on playing a lot more.

It's so satisfying to wanting to be good and then figuring out how the economy works or the game mechanics.
You can win in a variety of ways...You can:
    A. MIN/MAX using support stations that give bufffs to your production and that way try to out perform your competition.
    B. Straight up war. Just hoard Resources and build a big naval fleet and opress your opponent.
    C. My personal favorite...build a huge economy and start raking in the Money!! and just BUY OUT the competition!

All in all, I can definitly recommonend this game. If you like resources management/city builder games. This game will find a comfortable spot on your Favorites List.

(Edit: I am also a little dissapointed in how little attention this game has gotten. Only 149 reviews on metacritic by the time of this review)

One of the best city builder I have played. Solid and deep gameplay. Nothing much to add it is just a very good game. If you like this genre you must play it.

I've been out of the RTS scene for over a decade due to having kids and family stuff. Now I have a bit more time on my hands I decided to pick this up. My goodness is it good. Everything about it screams quality and good balance. If you are into the genre this is a must play IMO. Be warned though, it is a time sponge..

Just got a defeat screen in my first campaign. -1 point because the tutorial doesn't really explain the nuances of some mechanics very well. Just a liiiitle more information about how to manage finances would go a long way for me. I didn't understand why I lost. Still excited to try again from the beginning though.

-1 point for the monetization. $60 for all the content through UPlay

-1 point for the monetization. $60 for all the content through UPlay only - or $15 a month for the UPlay membership. I just think it's a tad steep, but maybe there's a lot more content than I realize. Maybe it'll get cracked soon.

This game is the spiritual successor to my favorite city-builder from the 90s. Games like Frostpunk and Surviving Mars have been bringing back this genre lately, but I didn't realize how much Anno truly revives it. I didn't realize this franchise existed, and I'm so excited to get back to designing city blocks with streets for all the walkers and stuff.

Besides the huge amount of contento behind paid Season Passes's, etc... the game got everything right in absolutely everything. A delight to play it, let's all ignore Anno 2250, and focus on the evolution of Anno 2070.
1800 is a gem, and I see myself playing hundred of hours.

Speaking of the AI they are a joke. they are pretty much there just to take your unoccupied islands or other you lame quests and that's all they will do. if you want to declare war against them you have to do it first and afterwards they don't even put up a good fight it's very easy to take their islands or just bully them around even the harder difficulty ones.

i had all the dlc up to season 2 i've heard docklands basically breaks the game making it even more easy!

Mods make it a little more interesting like spice it up and maug but eventually even those don't solve how boring this is! Also it sill freezes and it's not the mods causing it i've checked.

Apart from the damn thing freezing if you give it a dirty look the game itself is just so damn boring!

if your looking for a great anno game this is not it. Try anno 2070 with the ARRC mod you'll thank me later!

Great graphics, fun game, i love how fields now work.... but the options for UI, and scales are nonexistent, i constantly have to lean into my 4k screen and squint to see what buildings are on the build bar.

The worst Anno. There is only a single map campaign. Only 10-20 hours of content. It looks great but boring. Ship behavior is the most stupid thing I have ever seen. It's not worth the money. Don't buy until they release all 3 DLCs.

    Absolutely terrible expirience.

Googled for a problem just to find out, that there are people with same issues from 2019 year. Support quality almost zero for quite common issue. And at the same time company releases tons of payable DLC...

    How do you like that?!

Great ANNO part! I really enjoy this game, but it feels unfinished at the moment.
I earn +100k money right now, but I didn't have enough influence to expand.
Obviously the AI has no limit (Influence) for their ships, I never ever have a chance to combat against these huge fleets.
A lot of smaller bugs appearing from time to time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just. . . a bit boring.

I mean, it's a beautiful game. The graphics are stunning. The ability to seamlessly transition between regions is a fantastic addition. Very well balanced dynamics within the game re building tiers, economy, reputation, diplomacy etc. Even though it gets slightly repetitive, the newspaper is a nice idea.

But. . . despite all that, after hours of building up your economy, trade routes, status, expeditions, it just comes down to building more ship of lines and wiping out neighbours harbours (or having yours destroyed). Seems a very weak dynamic and undermines all the above. Just such an anti-climax to any play though I've had so far.

Anno 1800 have visuals of high quality. The harmony of Tycoon and strategy elements is very good. The game is compatible with history. BUT there are minor optimization problems. War mechanics looks bad. AS A RESULT, Anno 1800 is a successful game both visually and mechanically. It will meet the expectations of the strategy loving players.

Except Desync 40 when we are loading multiplayer game and 1 billion money limit. That actually make this game for max 5 stars, though other aspects of game are so beautiful that I can't give it less then 10.

If you are a fan of the series, you know exactly what you are going to get with the next installment. And you would be right, and you would be glad that it is so. Anno 1800 offers some new elements to the well established series, but overall it is a good ol' Anno. Graphics is very pretty and the building animations are just fantastic, as usual. Music is also very good. Anno was never really difficult and mainly because of one reason: there never was any time pressure, you always had an infinite amount of time to perfect your city the way you wanted it. This time around, the developers tried to change that at least a little bit, with the addition of more aggressive rivals and pirates. It sort of works, even though each opponent has a very obvious weakness that can be easily exploited, so you really have to pick three of the most difficult opponents to give this feature the desired effect. Comparing with Anno 2205, the difficulty was also stepped up in terms of removing shared workforce and making you manage trade routes much more carefully and often. So in that way, Anno 1800 goes back to its roots, which is not a bad thing. Another thing I like is the new expedition system, which replaced the hugely unpopular naval combat minigame from Anno 2205. The expeditions are in a classic pen and paper RPG style, which is a really nice touch. There could be more of them, but what the hell. Now about the negatives. The story of Anno 1800 feels feels like it was really just an afterthought. Comparing to Anno 2205, it is underwhelming, it is really easy, does not push you to do anything challenging, or anything at all really. The various in-game menus, like the resources menu, items menu and most importantly the production/consumption menus are a bit chaotic. The same menus were much clearer and overall better in the previous installment. Some quests and events are still bugged. There are no microtransaction, but there are season passes in place, offering hugely overpriced DLCs as usual. As for the SJW elements, they are definitely present although it is nothing game breaking. In my opinion it is a problem of our civilization and not of this game. Equality of outcome seems to be the way we are going, which seems extremely dangerous and stupid, not to mention unachievable.

I also want to mention the DLCs here:

Sunken Treasures - first DLC adds a new European region with interesting history, one super big island (or rather a piece of the mainland) that will allow you to fully express your megalomania. A nice start: 80 %

Botanica - Second DLC adds a new building, the Botanical Garden, which works the same as the Zoo and the Museum. It also adds some new decorations for your city. This should have definitely been part of the original game and should not cost extra: 70 %

The Passage - Third DLC adds a new region in the arctic. Pretty cool atmosphere, although there is not much that ties the arctic to the European region. Could use more intertwining: 75 %

Seat of Power - Fourth DLC adds a palace with various departments that give bonuses to your city. This was just ripped out of the original game to be sold separately: 60 %

Bright Harvest - Fifth DLC adds a expansion of farms: silos and tractors. Interesting, but this cannot possible be the entire DLC: 50 %

Land of Lions - Sixth DLC adds a new African region, with its own story, which is longer than usual, and a new special tier of European populace. I never knew how well developed and progressive Africa was in the 1800s: 55 %

Overall the game is just what you would expect from a Anno game. Compared to Frostpunk, it is much easier, it rewards careful planning more than quick decision making, but it ultimately does not matter, because you cannot really lose. DLCs are decent but overpriced. Final Verdict: 78 %

Maybe I'm just not that good, but this game has a learning curve that drains a lot of time when you don't get a concept. It's just not fun when it feels like you've wasted many hours repeatedly. I'm sure if you can get past that and enjoy RTS like it you'd enjoy it.

Anno 1800 is a visually stunning, incredibly compelling management-strategy game. One thing of particular note is just how great and addictive the gameplay loop is, hooking you in as you watch your cities develop and expand, made all the better as you unlock and build a wide variety of buildings. There are slight issues though, with an unintuitive UI and trade system, which due to the way resources are spread around the game can be irritating. Simply put, Anno 1800 is an incredibly addictive and engaging game, with a few flaws, but nothing that stops it from being a great entry in the series.

Once, RTS were a challenge that required quick thinking and foreplanning, never afraid to humiliate inept player. Today, they’re exact opposite, eager to please paying client. Anno 1800 is a perfect example of such strategy: good-looking, predictable and forgiving. [Issue#238, p.48]
