    Microsoft didn't publish my review on their store page, so here it goes. This is just an HD version of old classic with very MINIMAL modifications on the gameplay front. The game mechanics are so outdated that it is a torture to play this game in this age. AoE2 HD seems generations ahead of this game even though it was released 5 years ago. Don't let the developers fool you with theirMicrosoft didn't publish my review on their store page, so here it goes.     The only positive points worth a mention are the improved visuals and background music. Though they have increased the pop cap limits for matches but campaigns are still limited to 50.

    I got this for less than $10 in local currency but even then it seems a waste of that money, not even worth the 17 GB it hogs on your system.    … Expand

    How many years do we waited to have a proper remaster?, and what do we have here, just bullsh*t, seriously, if you don't want to lose your time or money, don't buy this, this is clearly not made with love to the saga, and obviously, there's no singularities in this game in comparation from the previous.

    If you already own the game and it runs on your computer fine there aint no reason to get this.
    Its just a nice spitshine of paint and new music.

    I actually kind of miss the pixel art.

    Game plays same as you remember it. So ill give it the same review score I did to the first one.

    Old wine in new bottles. Sadly Microsoft didn’t go the extra mile and brought some mechanics up to date. The underlying game is just the same old game, with its broken way finding, just with a lot of lipstick on. Beautiful lipstick though, but it just feels like his could’ve been much more.

    A good remaster. No one has expected big changes in gameplay. It´s still AOE only with much better grphics and soundtrack. Sadly that AI is not improved and that you can buy game only on Microsoft store.

    This game was a mixed bag for me, in the end I've put quite a bit of time into replaying through the single player.

    The Good:
    *New visuals and audio (music is great, and I love the building destruction).
    *They added a button that makes villages auto reseed the farms and people can now pass over the farms.
    *Villagers auto harvest resources after building a building that collects them (reduces the micromanagement).
    *Expanded population limit!
    *Added a narrator to the campaign.
    *Pathfinding is now better than the original game’s (as of the May 2019 patch, although it is still lacking compared to modern FPS game AIs).
    *The game now has global queues displayed to show what units are being built, you can click on them to go to the building training the unit.
    *Game is still being patched.

    The Bad:
    *Pathfinding is still bad, if you place one of your units a bunch of you’re non-moving units they won’t move to let it through.
    *Amount you can zoom in and out is limited by graphics detail, if you want to zoom out super far you need to have the graphics detail (it is called zoom detail) set to 1x. If you want full graphics detail your camera is forced rather close and I find this annoying, so I normally find myself playing at 2x detail instead of 4x which leads to it looking blurry at certain zoom levels.
    *AI still isn’t great although the May 2019 patch has improved some of the really bad things, perhaps future updates will eventually make it really good.
    *Modding takes you back to the dark ages where you have to go to a website to download the mods by hand.

    All in all I’d only recommend getting this if you loved the original and want to play through it again or if you’ve never played the original before. Going back to the non-hd version is now (after the latest patch) something I can’t do.    … Expand

    I don't understand why the score here is so low. It is clearly a qualified remake. And it successfully invoked a wave of returning.

    It should be an 8 point, but I make it 10 to increase its average score (which is too low according to my understanding)

    Looking forwards to AOE 4.

    Only thing that got changed is the graphics and even there i would argue it was not much of an addition - it doesn't look much better (apart from the better resolution of course). Everything else is exactly the same - id say even worse in many cases. I honestly don't remember the movement of all the units being this bad and I think the original game was much more fluid.     After playing the Greek campaign and some random map vs AI, this is my main list of Pros and Cons:

    4. You have a narrator before and after every campaign scenario.
    5. You have the tech trees button for every civilization (just like AOE 2).
    6. Amazing building destruction sprites.

    Cons:
    1.- Same old AI, even sometimes the pathfinding is somehow worse than the original game (Example: A group of villagers trying to collect food from forage bushes on a narrow space)

    2.- Civilizations controlled by the AI is the same, plays bad even in Hard difficulty : Develops too few technologies, in water maps it sends villagers to get resources very far from the base so it losses a lot of them, it does not take care about its villagers, 5 from 10 times (approx) it build defenses in isolate places that do not defend the base or close-base resources, and does not know how to counter attack
    TIP: If you like to play skirmish mode in solitary (like me), just play on maps with 0% water, for some reason the AI only in this kind of maps does not commit suicide with the villagers.

    3.- No basic formations or basic commands such as guard, follow, passive, aggressive, defensive behavior.
    4.- No information about how many villagers are working on different resources.
    5.- Can not queue more than one kind of units in one building.
    6.- No modding capability.
    7. Small personal detail: In the original version, dead units would start to decay, before becoming skeletons, before fading out. In the Definitive edition that decomposition detail is lost.

    I know that Devs say that "this is not a bug/basic limitation, it is a feature!". Old basic limitations/bugs have no reason for existing in a modern remake, so I hope that Forgotten empires are still working and creating a nice Age of Empires definitive edition such as nowadays Age of Empires 2 HD in Steam.    … Expand

    If you played it before i don't think you should buy it it's the same old game with a small visual enhancement that I don't think was worth my money however if u haven't played it or if u're new to RTS genre what better way to start than to play one of the best RTS of all time

    (but the thing is, I was able to play about a dozen games. Then the loading screen went crazy. The game-play was fine.) The good thing is, Microsoft's live agent tried to troubleshoot the problem (to no avail) and then transferred me to billing. I received a refund without any hassle.    Could not get the game to start. Used Microsoft's online live agent to obtain a refund.

You still got the same gameplay, same campaign and scenarios, and same mechanics.     BUT, this is the same game, clearly, but with better/smoother visuals.     I just made an account to write this review. I have the game for a month and the multiplayer experience is terrible. Like 1/3 of games ends before action because people get disconnected. Servers lags and are unstable. You cannot rejoin the game after DC - you can save a game and load it later. Great, nobody does it. There are lots of errors in the multiplayer lobby browser, eg. you cannotI just made an account to write this review. I have the game for a month and the multiplayer experience is terrible. When the original Age of Empires 2 was popular back in the day I was doing an average of 12-20 hours a day, every day on the game. The interface was practically flawless, easy to navigate, never lagged, the text wasnt tiny and almost impossible to read, and it wasnt a 17.4 gig install, it was a few hunded megs at most.

    I have been waiting for so long to buy and download this but am always extremely busy and never got around to doing it, move forward 1 year and I thought the Covid 19 lockdown was the perfect time so I went for it, especially with the game being on sale and only £6 odd.

    After installing, started it up, it looks lovely, the intro screens and what have you, get straight into a random 2 player game, set map to the largest and random teams. First thing that bugged me was the lag, hover over anything and it takes once second for any information to appear, drag the screen around using the right mouse button but everything moves in reverse and there is no option in the settings to reverse the reverse. The upgrade buttons all seem to have changed their positions, by the time I managed to upgrade my walls I was being attacked, oh and talking about walls, where the hell are the gates? and why the hell can I not send a man to build a wall from a distance? According to this update you cant unless you standing really close to the tiles that you have set the wall to be built on, and not just this, you come across invisible barriers(nothing there) that stop you placing a wall, or a tower in a perfectly useable spot(ie no trees, no people, no animals and no other buildings or cliff) ITS BLOODY WEIRD AND BLOODY INFURIATING).

    Everything in the game basically looks the same, its really hard to tell things apart when your getting attacked and stressed out(referencing my previous finding the wall upgrade button again) and another thing why in the hell would the wall upgrade buttons be in the granary? WTF has food got to do with walls?

    You cannot zoom out far enough, the mouse(on any setting) is unbelievably skitty) you try to move a man to build just off screen by moving your mouse and your mouse just flys and you end up in the black unexplored area, then you have to look at your mini map just to see how far away you are from base.

    The enemies are way to aggressive, I initially set the game to easy, just to have enough time to explore the interface and settings, after just 2 minutes the enemy camp was enormous and I was being attacked with no way to save myself.

    I commend the team for trying to re release and refine this game, but it hasn't worked, its absolutely abysmal in every area other that appearance.

    All I want(same as all other real Age of empires players) is for THE REAL age of empires 2 to work in these modern days. I never review games, I just registered to write something about this because its made me absolutely furious, that after all these years, with all the improvements in gaming, programming and technology, you have somehow managed to turn the gem that was age of empires 2 into this absolute frigging shocker.

    Age of Empires was better off just being left dead than all us fans having to suffer this.

    £6 on sale, if I had realised what it was like before paying and downloading I wouldn't have even given £2 if thats what it cost.    … Expand

    This game was created by Ensemble Studios, not the current developer. The current developer has essentially taken credit for everything ensemble built and has tried to erase history of ensemble. Do not trust the reviews on steam, they are fake. Age of empires , definitive edition doesnt deserve your money.

    I remaster as it's supposed to be. If you roam around looking for a classic RTS game, then this is it. I found it satisfying exactly as a classic real-time strategy. Enhanced graphics make it feel like a (almost) modern game while all the gameplay & interface elements keep the coolness of the original one. Pensé que los modelos de los personajes serían mejores pero no lo siento así. Incluso hasta al "arquero compuesto" lo siento peor, ya no se ve tan atractivo como el 1.     Pero lo de la IA y el guiar a tus soldados hace que este juego no sea recomendable para nada en estos momentos. Dudo muchísimo que corrijan estos errores en el futuro, porque parece que quieren sepultar a la primera entrega de por vida.
    Hay algunas mejores que se pedía mucho: Cola de granjas, indicadores de trabajos de aldeanos y aldeanos inactivos, ubicación de dónde salen los individuos. En fin, muchas cosas de las que ya tenía el AoE 2 pero que debía ya tener esta entrega. Una de las cosas que pudieron haber agregado es la formación del escuadrón, aunque a mí personalmente no me molesta, sí entiendo que a mucha gente sí y el jueg debió enfocarse, además, en el público que nunca jugó al AoE 1 y estas pequeñas cosas los terminó de ahuyentar.
    No puedo recomendar el juego, además de que el online está muerto, el estado actual es deplorable, sobre todo por lo acontecido con la Inteligencia Artificial que es lamentable y yo, personalmente, lo siento peor que antes.

The development effort called Remaster results in disaster in many games. They think they can sort out the job just by doing graphic polishing. However, since there are target groups that buy those Remaster games, I think the developer team doesn't care about the balance of the game because of it.

    I enjoy playing Age of Empires Definitive Edition, but I also think some obvious bugs need to be fixed. Like, enemies directly rushing through your villagers, not the army they are facing with. That is obvious; there is an army full of swordsmen, archers and cavalries, but the enemy army is still searching my villagers, which these villagers staying behind the army and lots of walls. This is not how to make a game, this is a disaster! In other words, I do not think of how these errors escape from the eyes of the developer companies. There is a huge game developer company and a huge distributor company behind it, but they do not fix even the slightest obvious mistake. Look, I'm not saying that they can't fix it. They do not fix it.

    I’m torn. On the one hand it’s Age of Empires as I remember it, atmosphere and spirit intact. On the other hand despite refreshed graphics it’s simply an old game so sentiment seems the only driving factor here. [04/2018, p.61]

    Not even beautiful graphics, new animations and a great soundtrack can hide the fact that Age of Empires isn’t good enough according to modern standards. Remaster brings some nostalgic feelings but only when you get over the technical issues, lags and AI mistakes.

    I still have major concerns about the game's combat, but Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is a good history lesson for what inspired me and so many others to love RTS genre so much. It’s a brilliant game with a ton of content and for such a low entry price, I think it’s worth a look even if it’s not perfect.
