A Hat in Time is a delightful and whimsical platformer that successfully captures the essence of classic 3D platforming games from the bygone era. Developed by Gears for Breakfast, this game manages to strike the perfect balance between nostalgia and innovation, offering a charming and memorable experience that will captivate both newcomers and fans of the genre.

One of the first things that stands out about A Hat in Time is its gorgeous art style. The game boasts a vibrant and colorful aesthetic that feels like a love letter to the golden age of 3D platformers. Each world you visit is beautifully crafted, with attention to detail and a distinct personality. From the cozy, forest-filled hub world to the bizarre and whimsical environments, every level is a visual treat.

The gameplay mechanics in A Hat in Time are a joy to experience. Controlling Hat Kid, the game's adorable protagonist, feels tight and responsive. The variety of hats she can equip adds a layer of versatility to her abilities, allowing for creative approaches to platforming challenges. The level design is cleverly crafted, with a mix of challenging platforming sequences, engaging puzzles, and entertaining boss fights that keep you on your toes. Each level is unique and offers its own set of mechanics and objectives, preventing the game from ever feeling repetitive.

The narrative of A Hat in Time is surprisingly engaging, offering a whimsical and lighthearted story that gradually unfolds as you progress through the game. The characters you encounter are colorful and memorable, and their interactions with Hat Kid bring a sense of life and personality to the game world. The humor is often charming and genuinely funny, creating an enjoyable atmosphere throughout the adventure.

The game's soundtrack deserves a special mention. Composed by Pascal Michael Stiefel, the music perfectly complements the game's whimsical nature, evoking a sense of wonder and adventure. Each track is carefully crafted to match the tone and theme of the levels, enhancing the overall experience and immersing the player even further into the game world.

While A Hat in Time offers an incredibly enjoyable experience, it's not without a few minor flaws. The camera controls, while generally functional, can sometimes be a bit finicky and cause frustrating moments. Additionally, a few technical hiccups and occasional frame rate drops can momentarily disrupt the otherwise smooth gameplay.

Overall, A Hat in Time is an absolute delight for fans of 3D platformers. Its charming art style, engaging gameplay mechanics, well-crafted levels, and captivating soundtrack make for an unforgettable experience. Despite a few minor flaws, the game shines with its attention to detail, creative design, and pure nostalgic appeal. Whether you're a long-time fan of the genre or a newcomer looking for a whimsical adventure, A Hat in Time is an absolute must-play that will leave you with a smile on your face.

This game is great. All the levels are full of personality and life, the movement is tight and is some ways better than most 3D Mario games. I'd give it a 10, but the Seal the Deal DLC and Alpine Skyline level aren't great, but still alright. If you're a fan of platformers, I definitely recommend this game.

Quite simply, even without being much of a Nintendo fan, other 3D platformers (of the Mario variety) totally blow "Some brat in time" out of the water and are far more replay-able and enjoyable. So once again, even after coming back to it years later for affirmation, its is extremely befuddling to try and understand what people saw about it that I didn't. Note that I'm quite aware of other platformers going back as far as the Rayman series- namely "Rayman 2: The Great Escape" being a particularly good comparison since it does more than "A hat in time," ever will do and it did it better 18 years before this modern platformer saw the light of day.

I could pretty much just cite multiple examples of how it rips off actually "good" titles like the Paper Mario series, or pretty much combines all the cutesy-wootsy things that companies have been selling forever to grown men in both Japan as well as North America, but all of that won't mean much to people who's tastes haven't really matured as they've gotten older. "Some little girl time," isn't particularly original, it has some pretty slippery collision detection going on and a lot of the platforming doesn't feel precise. This is a huge problem. It also looks kind of terrible from a visual standpoint. The in-game graphics option refers to its "depth-of-field" setting as "how the game was intended to be played," which is utterly ridiculous as it looks terrible and hides loads of LOD range texture pop-in on the Unreal engine... which can handle everything they throw at it when it comes to this game. Theirs also something about the strange and overly bright lighting that makes the whole screen distracting to look at since it pulls your attention away from the center of the screen.

I guess its fine, its an average 3D platformer collect-a-thon, even though those died out a full decade ago. I guess what really ticks me off is that its so mediocre and people praised it so hard, but what has "Gears for breakfast" done since? Have they released anything besides a few DLC packs for the game that barely add anything? Exactly. If they were the next big name in the genre, then maybe they would've outdone themselves by now, since the implication from fans is that they "already had all the right ingredients." Sure they did. I bet it had nothing to do with a stagnant year in Videogames back in 2017 either.

So many weird design choices with this game. Gameplay sucks and the camera is annoying as all hell. Level design is sparse, controls are downright awful, there's this weird thing where you press shift and the whole screen goes black to show a small circle of where to go so you can't see anything which you will constantly press trying to roll. There's automatic wall climbing and she wants to grab onto anything and everything in sight then the camera locks onto this girl you are supposed to chase with no warning whatsoever. Its like you being pulled in a million different directions. I honestly lasted a grand total of 30 seconds after the first level loaded before I quit. Terrible game. Just from a technical standpoint needs much longer in the oven before it is really even playable. Then they can work out everything else like the level design, game-play mechanics and graphics. Yeah this game sucks… thought I would like it because Mario Odyssey is my favourite game but no. It’s just really bad. Nothing good to say. Waste of time and money. Graphics bad, camera bad, platforming bad. Just pure garbage all the way through. I try to find some good in every game I play but wow this one is a real stinker!

A great platformer with a decent story and fun, interesting characters. Each world is dense and contains interesting missions that make the game an overall blast to play. The only real downsides in the game are the fact that there are frame rate issues at different parts of the game and that the combat overall is extremely simple.

The first two acts of the game are underwhelming, with their low difficulty and cheesy storylines providing an unappealing and dry introduction to the game that fails to keep your attention and lowers your expectations as a whole. However, as you progress into the later acts, the quality of the levels will improve and convince you enough to keep revisiting them to try to find all of their secrets.

The gameplay is simplistic and there are not really any complex objectives. It is a true blue platformer that does not try to be overly ambitious. The collectables in the game are purely cosmetic and do not influence the gameplay in any advantageous manner, but they can convince you to explore every nook and cranny and climb to places you'd never think of just to retrieve them. Sadly, it doesn't take long for the collectables and currency to become pointless to acquire.

A Hat in Time is short and does not look fully fleshed out. Although the game is beautiful and offers a decent amount to explore, it does not scratch the same itch as other adventure games designed in the same light such as Super Mario Sunshine. However, it can still be fun when played with a friend. A good lengthy cooperative night can make the experience enjoyable and hard to set aside.

One of the best games I have EVER played. The controls and movement is one of the best in a videogame ever. And the murder mystery. OH. MY. GOD. ITS SO GOOD. The game has some difficulty spikes at the boss battles, but It's really satisfying when you defeat them. This is what 3D platformers should strive to be.

You go from a town taken over by the Mafia to a competition between a penguin and an owl where you have to star in their movies to give them positive reviews based on how well you played. There is also a forest inhabited by a shadow monster that makes you sign contracts after taking your soul and you also travel to a group of islands stretching above the sky. The DLC makes the game even better with a ship of seals called the "SS Literally Can't Sink" and work for a jewelry store owner to collect timepieces(like stars and shines from Mario) in the metro. There is also loads of customization for the different hats, costumes, and color schemes. Although there are only 40 timepieces in the base game, the DLC also adds a much harder mode containing missions that keep you coming back to the game to complete another objective. There is also a new multiplayer DLC that is basically infection but in A Hat in Time which is a great mode to play with some of your friends that get the game too. The $40 price for the base game with the first 2 DLC packs is a great steal so get it if you have the chance. Expand

Basically, almost everything is perfect. The level design is great. The worlds and whimsical and well designed. Your range of motion is perfect. Just running around and not really even doing anything just feels... GOOD. It's hard to describe but the way everything controls is just fluid and perfect.

There are some glitches here and there but they don't really break the game. Sometimes it's frustrating because they're collision problems and I clipped through something but it was rare. The camera is a little wonky at times but honestly... as someone who grew up with games like this it's not even a problem for me anymore. Fiddling with cameras is like second nature to me. The difficulty curve is weird and it definitely spikes later on out of nowhere but it's not that bad.

Overall it's just a really amazing game and I regret waiting so long to finally play through it completely

Only issue is that it's pretty glitchy at times, but its still 100% worth the playthrough. I can't be the only one hoping for a sequel someday?

In the end, A Hat In Time features enough charm to overcome its shortcomings. If you can live with the unreliable camera, then you'll find a game that offers a pleasant platforming experience, tons of secrets to uncover, and a good amount of abilities to experiment with. The variety of environments and activities is appreciated, as are some of the breaks from platforming norms. The characters may be the main reason for playing the gamefrom beginning to end, just to see what they'll say or do next. For fans of platformers, A Hat In Time is well worth your time.

A Hat in Time proudly doesn’t shy from showing its inspirations from the 3D platform classics while radiating its own unique personality thanks to charmingly designed worlds (although we could do with a bit more of them!). It is unfortunate then that precise jumping is never as… precise as it should be. Even though it may not hinder the enjoyment by much it is nevertheless a shortcoming in an otherwise especially enjoyable experience.

A great game from a genre that we see so rarely on PC. It’s not too demanding, but it’s pure joy to play, as it’s charming, cheerful, full of stuff to gather and uncover and does a lot to keep you engaged all the time. Not all levels were designed to the same high standard, but even in its weaker moments A Hat in Time is still good. At its best it really shines. [13/2017, p.60]
