Was really skeptical of the game as I played the Alpha, it didn't feel like it was going to be as fleshed out as I would have liked. However, I was completely proven wrong by the official release. Some of the most charming level design coupled with tight gameplay makes this a must play.

Also JonTron is in it so 10/10

Literally more fun than Mario Galaxy. It's that good. The fluidity of the movement from Sunshine mixed with the charm of the Wind Waker all packed with the inventive scenario design from Paper Mario. An absolute delight from beginning to end. I mean, even Yahtzee liked it - that's got to mean something, right?

The platforming is smooth, the characters are charming, the worlds are beautiful and the game looks smooth as heck at 60+fps and high resolutions. The best part is probably that the developer is adding in new worlds later and there's a Steam Workshop option coming soon. This is worth every cent of the purchase.

I hope to see more from this studio in the future! I'm definitely a fan.

Think Mario galaxy but with a special hat and the levels are not globe shaped. Way more special moves than mario though for sure and lots of replay value. It makes you want to go back and explore for the hidden orbs that it shows you pictures of.

Really, you can't go wrong with A Hat in Time. It's quirky. It's charming. It has tons of flair, or for the rare spots it doesn't, it makes up for with humorous dialogue and large, beautiful scenery that will blow you away for such a "simple" looking game on the outside.

It manages to go really in-depth in terms of storytelling and narrative - and just wait for the conclusion. You won't be the same—in fact, you'll miss it so much you'll play it again, and perhaps again and again.

It really has tons of replayability, is what I'm saying. The game actually features several instances of "choose your own path" style gameplay, and in a way that's neither offputting for detracting (I won't spoil it—you'll have to choose yourself!). And not to mention it's in the same field as Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and even Banjo-Kazooie — what of those -aren't- replayable all the time?

The soundtrack is equally as charming. I can't actually describe it - go listen! The game's composer made such marvelous works, go listen or go play so you can experience some of them.

Cons? In it's current state, it does carry a -few- bugs (for instance, clipping through objects by occasion, etc), but we live in the modern age of bug fixing and patching, so it shouldn't be a detriment. You could argue its artstyle (ingame) is a bit of an off put - true, some may not find the initial 'toon' style appealing, but you may also be surprised to find that it has some pretty intense graphics otherwise - beyond the initial glance, you may actually find that it has some pretty crazy environments.

A Hat in Time is simply a call back to the "good old days" of platforming and grabbing collectible goodies. Jump, dive, dream and even "solve murder" through this marvelous little adventure easily accessible by anyone who owns a PC (and you can steam refund if it doesn't--soon out on PS4 and Xbox as well!). Not to mention the game is receiving two bonus levels later on (yes, free, entire new chapters to the game!), as well as co-op (+online co-op for PC version!) and mod support (PC version!) - the game will surely live into a age well beyond the present, and I believe will never cease to amaze us with what the developers (and fans) are able to do with it in the coming decades.

The one negative review from the critics should be taken down and it's quite sad how that person sees games. Hat in Time will probably go down as the most underappreciated game of 2017. The game is smooth, beautiful, and is full of variety and interesting mechanics. I hope a lot of people enjoy this game and we get another one.

No beating around the bush, A Hat in Time is an adorable and charming game. Based around classic 3D platformers from the N64 era, A Hat in Time has you play as the adorable Hat Kid, a young girl who makes use of different hats with different abilities, who is searching several worlds for her Time Pieces in order to see her way home. The overall plot may feel simplistic, but each individual world feels like their own little story of their own. From fighting off the mafia in a shady looking town to helping two birds fight for a movie award, the game has a lot of charm in it's worlds. And the worlds, for the most part, aren't small and feature lots to do within each act. They are jam packed with places to explore, characters to interact with and time pieces to find. In a sense, the game's progression feels similar to Super Mario Sunshine, where each act puts you on a path to a set time piece, but the open world gives you lots of freedom to explore and there aren't many limits in each act, which is nice.

Another aspect I enjoyed a lot was the characters. Despite there being a few notable stand-outs, they were easy to love. From the goofy mafia to the disco penguin DJ Grooves to the Hat Kid herself, I found the cast to be overly charming. Even the standard NPC characters had some witty bits of dialogue and I always respect that.

However, there is one thing I felt was wrong with this game and that was the length. With there only being a total of 40 Time Pieces and about 5 worlds to explore, the game doesn't take long to beat. While getting all 40 Time Pieces is still on my to-do list while I'm writing this, reaching the final boss doesn't take long. Maybe the game will release more content over time, which I hope it does because this is one charming game I'd love to play more of.

In the end, A Hat in Time is just choked full of charm and character. I loved every minute of it, no doubt. The length is about all I can talk down on, but that is hidden behind a lovable cast, detailed and creative worlds, clean controls and a load of easy to use abilities that make the game feel so great. Here's hoping the game will get an expansion, but in the mean time, I'll enjoy what I have; a charming and adorable 3D platformer.

I first encountered this game through the Brutalmoose Youtube Channel, where he covered the beta for this game shortly. I was immediately impressed by the visuals and various moves displayed and Brutalmoose seemed to have a good impression of it.

Having played the full game and completed it myself, I can say that this is definitely one of the best 3D platformers I've ever played. In my head, this surpasses the legacy of platformers like Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong and Super Mario 64.

In A Hat in Time you play as Hat Kid, an alien child trying to get back home. However, you are forced to make an unplanned stop due to passing near Mafia Town.

From here to there, you lose all 40 units of your fuel, also called Time Pieces, or Thingamajigs, or Junk, it all depends on who you're asking. Immediately you are met with a variety of colorful NPCs and enemies and released into an open world where you can practice your varied move set which includes Dashing, air dashing, double jumps, air recovery... and that's before you even factor in the additional movesets you gain with Badges and Hats.

The controls are amazing. Saying they're "Tight and responsive" doesn't do them justice. To quote the legendary AVGN, this feels just like it should, like you're in control. Not one time throughout my playthrough of A Hat in Time did I feel frustrated by the controls in any way. Every movement was as I intended it. No slipping around, no delays, perfect.

The sounds and voice acting are great. All of the voice actors did a bang up job playing their roles and made for enjoyable and memorable characters. The option to have the characters mumble (in Banjo Kazooie style) rather than talk is also fun. However, I must comment that unfortunately not ALL characters seem to have mumbles, which is a shame, I was really looking forwards to hearing the Jon Tron bird mumble.

I never buy soundtracks on Steam unless they're in a bundle with the game. But for this game i actively went out of my way to buy the Soundtrack. It's that good. It's so good I hum it in my head when I'm at work. That's how enjoyable and memorable it is. Not to mention, it has some tracks by the legendary Grant Kirkhope! In addition, you also get remixes you can unlock within the game of certain themes, which you can even swap so they play in the level instead of the regular music. Talk about going one step beyond!

The only gripe I have with this game is that it's a tad short for my liking (for now!) However, the creators had the foresight to make this game easily moddable, which adds plenty of hours of fun to it.

I really want to see this game become a franchise, I want to see these developers take this even further! More Hats, more Badges, more levels!

Congratulations to the crew for showing the world that it doesn't take Nintendo to do a platformer right.

The collecting does NOT feel like a chore, and instead gives the player the choice to NOT collect items when it becomes tedious, while still helpfully guiding the player along through the amazingly intricate world. It does literally everything right except depth of field.

The worlds are beautiful, huge, filled with hilarious characters. Coupled with hilarious writing, an awesome soundtrack and a great art style, each world ends up feeling like its own grand adventure. The presentation isn't all, though - Hat kid's controls are more fun and responsive than most 3D platformers, and the stages you run around in can vary between a ton of varied gameplay styles including tough platforming sections, stealth, pure exploration, and more. It rarely ends up boring, if at all.

Like Shovel Knight and Freedom Planet before it, the game builds upon nostalgia for old platforming games while creating a unique experience that could very well sit alongside its inspirations - Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario TTYD, Banjo, and other N64/Gamecube legends. Hat in Time surely doesn't hide its inspirations, but the game feels like a perfect melting pot of all the best games from that era.

With 40 timepieces (basically power-stars) to collect, some of which being massive ~20 minute missions, the game ends up being longer than you'd initially expect it to be for only 5 chapters. The bosses are insane, especially in the chapters besides chapter 1. There are a lot of extras and secrets to find, upgrades and bonus music tracks, so competitions have a lot to look forward to. It isn't tedious at all to 100% the game either, and it ends up being a very satisfying 15-20 hour adventure if you don't rush. For speedrunners, the game is incredibly rewarding to tear through and on par with legendary games like Mario Sunshine. it even has a timer and cutscene removal options for easier practice. Whichever way you decide to play the game, you get your money's worth for sure.

It's hard to ignore some of the game's flaws though, which only stand out because the rest of the game is so great:
    - While the camera is really good for most of the game, it has some issues dealing with cramped spaces and may jitter around a little
    - Some wonky collision when dealing with a few of the curved and angled platforms
    - A few instances of missing voice acting
    - Chapter 1 boss fights feel less polished than the other bosses

Its easy to look past these things, though, since the game is pure joy. With steam workshop support, coop, bugfixes, and bonus chapters on the way via free updates, it's so easy to recommend. Get this game. That is an order.

It combines almost everything people love about "3D Platformers", while adding it's own things, and while you're kinda right about the gameplay being very reminiscent of "Mario Sunshine", it doesn't try to fully replicate it. This game is also not like "Yooka-Laylee" where you're going to look at the characters and think "Oh, it's kinda like Banjo-Kazooie" or "Oh, it's kinda like Mario, right?" No, it's not like that at all. "A Hat In Time" is "A Hat In Time" and nothing else is.

A Hat in Time is one of the best games out here. Every time you play again you find new things. You aren't forced to go for the objective and the game doesn't want you to do that directly. This is awesome and I support games like these.

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD THIS GAME IS SO GOOD! *Phew* ...I just needed to get that out right away. So! A Hat In Time is a collect-a-thon 3D Platformer in which you may traverse large levels (One of which is just dead up open-world) in a similar structure to a little known game called Super Mario 64. A Hat In Time is a collect-a-thon 3D Platformer in which you may traverse large levels (One of which is just dead up open-world) in a similar structure to a little known game called Super Mario 64. By that, I mean that you select a level (or "World", if you will), and then select and objective to do in said level. You run around, do your thing, and leave. And you do this in really any way you like. Now don't get me wrong, there is an "Intended path", but the game really doesn't stop you from sequence breaking. Hell, in some ways it outright encourages it. Ok, now let's get into the nitty-gritty. A Hat In Time follows Hat Kid (Or Hat Girl, if you wanna call her that) on a cute little quest to gather her fuel supply of Time pieces, so that she can get home. Along the way the meets charming character after charming character, each as lovable as the last. She also finds yarn along the way that allows her to whip up new hats with new abilities. Now, I've heard people complain about the story and voice acting being "Too goofy" and... that's bad somehow? A Hat In Time is a goofy and charming game, so the voice acting is too! And you don't really NEED a decent story for a collect-a-thon. all you need is a thing to collect and a reason to collect it. A 3D plat-former typically gives up a solid story for great game play, and A Hat In Time nailed that!
10/10 game totally worth the price! Can't wait for the switch release!

The world in Nyakuza Metro was fun to explore while looking for the objective, which was sometimes hard to find. The new chapter in Seal the Deal wasn't as good as Nyakuza, but was still good. Navigating on the maze-like ship was hard and frustrating, and if I were to review it separately, i would give it at least an 8/10. The new difficulty is great, and it does it's job at being hard. It sometimes changes the missions completely. It ranges from adding some more obstacles to fighting two bosses at the same time. Expand

Best platformer l've ever played. I would like to note the good graphics on Unreal Engine , which is quite old, but all the juices have grown out of it. I also liked the simple but interesting plot with different interesting planets and different interesting chapters on it. But most of all, personally I remember only Snatcher, the girl in the hat and girl with a mustache (as they are called)

Basically, almost everything is perfect. The level design is great. The worlds and whimsical and well designed. Your range of motion is perfect. Just running around and not really even doing anything just feels... GOOD. It's hard to describe but the way everything controls is just fluid and perfect.

There are some glitches here and there but they don't really break the game. Sometimes it's frustrating because they're collision problems and I clipped through something but it was rare. The camera is a little wonky at times but honestly... as someone who grew up with games like this it's not even a problem for me anymore. Fiddling with cameras is like second nature to me. The difficulty curve is weird and it definitely spikes later on out of nowhere but it's not that bad.

Overall it's just a really amazing game and I regret waiting so long to finally play through it completely

I remember seeing this game in early alpha on youtube and I just loved how it looked: the cel-shading graphics are one of my favorites of all time - in every game - and I loved the charm it had and how fun it looked to play. Seriously this game already got me hooked on just videos and even Mario Odyssey didn't make me say it.

In short, A Hat in Time it's a collect-a-ton platformer with the similar vibe of Mario 64 and other open world platforms, except with a lot more charm and a funnier character. The first moment I started playing I really fell in love with the hat kid: she's just energetic, fun, and you can see it by just how she looks and acts. In comparison, Mario looks like an old man in a jumpsuit - oh wait...

The levels are well designed and each world has its levels, and they usually try new "settings" that I really enjoy doing them: the first area, Mafia Town, is very open but each level has their own quirk that tends to change the area a bit - for example, the upper area can be or not be available. The second area - dead bird studio - has two different "paths", with one being a parade in a city and the other in a train - complete with mystery murder!

On top of that, the hats and pins give the Kid a lot of variety in her actions and movements and let me also say this: I played it with the keyboard and I NEVER -EVER- felt I was fighting with the controls. Controls are (near) PERFECTION: I never felt that dying or falling off was the game's fault, it was uniquely mine.
If anything, the only issue I had was during wall jumps since the kid tends to jump away a lot of times instead of grabbing the edge but it was something that soon I got used to.

I sincerely never felt this much fun in a platform ever since the days of Jak and Daxter (the first game), or Sly Racoon for the ps2 - or maybe Mario 64 but I'm not a fan of their games. It's varied, it's full of passion, it's comedic, it's creepy (the manor area is very spooky but in a cartoonish way), it's lovely, it's everything that old platforms had and new platforms miss! Even the bad guys are funny and not really cruel at all!

With all that said and done, there's just one thing that turned me off from this game...it's very short! I haven't completed it 100% yet but I'm at 70% and I'm only 9 hours in! It's a lot of fun but I can't stop thinking that this game wasn't fully completed: there are only 5 worlds, very few relics (12, which turns into 4 relics), 11 badges (with 3 being essentially pointless, but fun to have) and only 6 hats, with your main hat essentially never used once! There's even a "weapon" slot but it's permanently fixed by your umbrella, which makes it pointless to even have. And while the only other collect deal is the coins for random rewards, there isn't much else to do once you reach 100% and I'm sure it won't take more than - I dare guess - 15 hours.

But frankly, I don't care: sure I got it as a gift but this game WAS a must have for me and even for the asking price it demands (28 euros / 25 dollars), it's DAMN worth every penny and the fact that it's very well done on pc - again, I used a keyboard, NEVER had issues at all - it just shows how much love and care this game had.

The short duration of the experience is my only gripe but beyond that, it is a must-have.
Especially if you're done playing plumber and needs a diet from all that mushroom pizza and pasta...

PS: I'm italian so the joke is literally on me!

Instead Gears for Breakfast has delivered a fantastic 3d platform.
It's cute, it's funny, the 5 chapters are quite different from each other and each one is well designed both gameplay wise and aesthetically. Can't give it 10 because under certain aspects it could've been polished a bit more.

On a unrelated note: it was released for 30$ (2x backer price). A pricetag maybe a bit too high for an indie game made by a very small and unknown team (except for the music composer). It was a courageous choice by the devs who clearly believed in their product.
I honestly would have skipped this title if I didn't read so many positive comments about it on the net as usually kickstarted games are more often than not trash, and so are indie 3d platforms.

A Hat In Time is kickstarter game funded in attempt to recapture the glory days of 3D Platforming and it does just that. It gives you entertaining levels to platform across and many collectibles to collect.

The story has you take control of the cute Hat Girl who is on her way home until Mafia Men ruins her plan by making her fuel fly out. Her fuel are these hourglass that serve as the stars or jiggys if you were playing Mario or Banjo Kazooie. To get enough fuel you must venture across 5 worlds tackling different task for the hourglass.

    The Worlds:
As stated before you tackle 5 Worlds for hourglasses. ALMOST all of these can be beaten in any order. As long as its available, you can play it or skip it. Some worlds require all levels to be beaten before the final boss though. Too avoid spoilers, i will just state each world is filled with creativity and entertaining level design.

    The Characters:
Every world offers new characters to see while it may bring one or two back. Almost the whole game has voice acting too which is actually not bad at all. Everyone of the characters voices makes them all the more interesting.

    The Abilities/Collectibles:
The game has a hat system. Each hat gives you an new ability. You unlock these new abilities by stitching new hats which can be done by collecting yarn balls. Each hat you unlock is mainly built for that world but the new hat can be used in the previous world for collecting other collectibles such as time rift tokens or yarn balls. It basically balances itself out and does backtracking well.

That being said, the game has a nice small amount of collectibles to get. You have your main collectible, time rift tokens, yarn balls, Hats, Badges, and others.
I already explained some above so i will continue with the others. Time rift tokens are used to spin a slot machine to obtain the "other" collectibles such as music, more hat variety, and colors (Hat Kids appearance can be changed).

Badges are like Tonics from Yooka Laylee. You can edit your gameplay slightly, for example, one token lets you run up the wall after a belly dive.

    The New:
A Hat In Time doesnt really add anything to the genre but does everything so well and unique, its fine.

    The Music:
Not much to say here. The soundtrack is very catchy and you will memorize some of the music just like you would if playing a Mario or Banjo Kazooie game.

    The Negative:
The game is short...Like really short. Can finish in a day.
The end game falls really short too. Chapter 4 completely drops the entertaining part and goes full platforming and chapter 5 shouldve had a bit more levels.

    Summary:
A Hat In Time hits all the right nails of a good 3D Platformer. Its charming, funny, creative, and has good challenging platforming sections but is pretty short. That being said, i give it a 9/10.

A hat in time is the story of a young lady from space who stores magical time pieces (think of it as stars in mario 64) and uses them as fuel to go home, one day an accident happens and she loses all of them so she has to travel to 5 different worlds to get them back.

The story is not amazing, is simple like getting a kiss and cake from a princess, but the gameplay is another story.

The story is not amazing, is simple like getting a kiss and cake from a princess, but the gameplay is another story.
The way hat kid (thats her name) moves is similar to mario in mario sunshine, she can jump, dive and wall jump but she can also double jump, cancel the momentum of the dive a front flip and has different power ups at her disposal, if i were to compare the controls of other platformers like banjo kazooie, mario sunshine, and crash i would say that a hat in time is the one with the most control and enjoyable to play, the movement hat kid has its INSANE in fact it gives you so much control you can move with such confidence in the worlds you explore with no little fear of messing up, not because its easy but because the movement she has is very vast and easy to handle.

Now there is one detail with the controls and its the camera, you cant control it to see specific things and you can only focus the camera to look slightly up, this is bad and stupid and i dont know why they make it like this.

The difficulty on the platform and levels is not out of this world but its pretty enjoyable and also remember the power ups? well you are gonna use them allot, this is one of the things i love from videogames that they give you something not for a specific use but for you to do whatever you want with them and they are very useful on every mission, its also not afraid to throw special missions that break the platforming formula and experiment a little which is executed perfectly. The boss battles in my opinion are one of the best things in this game breaking another platform rule of the 3 lives bosses, i honestly dont even know how many times you have to hit each boss to just die and also the level of difficulty increases with each stage and boss so as you get better at this game it also ask you more from you.

the art is very charming and the characters are also charming and original, they all have very interesting personalities and makes the simple story interesting to listen, i personally enjoy the voice acting (expect from one blonde lady) but if you dont like you can just mute it.

you can also see the level of details put in allot of the extra art, each time you enter a stage they have a different drawing to represent each mission (expect the time rift all of the are the same) which brings me to hat kid again, she is the most adorable thing in this entire game, the way she interacts, the noises she make and the animation she has just warms your hearth.

now there are some problems, first the biggest one IS TOO SHORT! why does good game creators have low budgets? but hey it is what it is.
second there are some glitches in the game that kind off bump down the experience but just a little
the time rifts can be a bother to find when you dont have A GOOD CAMERA! specially on mafia town where you have to look around long corridors that are position diagonally and you can only look to the floor, or when you are trying to explore a certain level and you dont have the camera to look around is annoying too.

the final problem for me is that on the special platforming is too easy for my taste, now this is tricky since i believe it has good design but the abilities hat kid has and the way you can control her makes this a walk in the park, i literally enter a level i had never enter and play it like i was a speed runner now that doesnt mean its bad but if you are gonna give us so much control then spice things up a little, also the minions arent particularly hard to beat... just press a bunch of times and you are set some of them need another trick that is jumping and hitting them in the head but it doesnt changes too much of that.

in conclusion i recommend this game, you are definetly gonna have a good time playing it

A Hat in Time was a pleasant surprise for me, being so skeptical going into it.

There are only a few things that I think could've improved the game any further. I, for one, was expecting more weapon choices to become available throughout the game, but that's not a real complaint. My only beef with the game is how underwhelming the 5th chapter is. Each previous chapter felt like its own, unique section of the game, while the 5th chapter served only as the cherry on top of the rest. The game may as well have 4 chapters, which is fine, only the final one was a mere tease, in my opinion. Still, this does not ruin the experience by any means and the length of the game does indeed warrant the $30 price tag.

All in all... very impressive. I would not mind a sequel, which the game sort of sets itself up for, one bit!

It's simple and lacks a lot of substance, but the smooth gameplay and aesthetics mean it doesn't need to be very heavy on story or coherence. Why do you collect all that? Well, a mafia member broke into your space ship causing everything to be sucked out into space. Your ship was powered by Time Pieces, which also can manipulate the time, making them pretty dangerous.
Their ability makes them a pretty wanted item, and you'll need to fight bosses to get some of them. Boss fights are incredible, with great voice acting (gamespot boooooo) and an absolutely incredible OST - it's one of the best OSTs I have ever heard.

In A Hat in Time, dialogue and writing enhances the game and gives each character a clear personality. The whimsical style of the game is simple and clean, although sometimes gets a bit messy and hard to follow.
Let's talk about the bosses. These bosses are AMAZING. They put up a pretty good fight, getting more difficult with each boss. Each boss (mostly) has their own unique abilities, and normally have several phases to deal with. However, if you die during these bosses, you're forced to start all the way from the beginning. The platforming challenges within the level are fun, but sometimes is repetitive and get frustrating at times.
The story is a bit underdeveloped. It's your classic, "Oh no! I can't get home because I need more power!" that's being used in game after game after game. A Hat in Time uses this story but makes it feel more... empty.

(This isn't as important, but when I tried to complete this game 100%, I realized I needed the Seal the Deal DLC... so If you want to get 100% completion, you need Seal The Deal.)

Overall, A Hat in Time is an amazing amazing AMAZING game, and I found myself coming back constantly. The game is an instant favorite, and recommend it to anyone who likes platformers.

The controls are actually so good that they rival Mario at time, i have not played Mario games past Mario galaxy so i cannot say how they have changed. But this feels like Mario Sunshine but without the gimmick of the water canon. Instead you have magic hats that you stitch by collecting wool in the game, it is fun finding all the wool. They are placed well and are fun trying to solve their puzzles. The voice acting and the characters are all extremely likeable. Hat girl herself is the most adorable thing in the world and has more character then most AAA paid voice actors. You can tell the developers had a lot of fun designing the game. They seem to make fun of everything just like Conker. So many times it had me laughing out loud because of the funny writing, like the ghost guy who makes you sign contracts. It reminded me of Conkers bad fur day(My favourite game of all time)but without the drinking, swearing, violence and sexual themes of Conker. Don't get me wrong this game is surprisingly dark for a platforming adventure kids can like, like the part at the queens mansion. But it never seems over bearing, in fact i love how it covers so many things well. Many directors of kids films even say themselves, you need to add a little bit of dark stuff. But modernized for the current generation of consoles. I love this game, it is so refreshing to play a game like this. I was a bit bored at first, but once i understood what this was. I had so much fun listening to the characters and going through the time rifts. It never felt like busy work, it felt like extremely engaging excellent game play. This game is not without its flaws though. I have had the game crash so badly that it bugged out steam thinking it was still alive. Forcing me to end process over tsk manager. There are noticeable frame-skips even this late, as the game came out 3 years ago. The game will suddenly have a mini heart attack, then quickly load up. LOL It made me be like"Oh no, is it going to crash..... Oh good"*LOLS ensue. The camera can also be an issue. Some sections of the game slow down for stealth(Which is fine and good)but the camera can get cumbersome in tight areas when you are trying to find the next platform to jump onto to get to the next part, while avoiding guards. Another thing is rifts give a slot machine to obtain different aesthetic upgrades. I don't like the randomization. I think they should let us choose. Another thing is there are no lives as there are in traditional games of this sort. I think they maybe should have added a life mechanic where if you die too many times you have to start at the beginning of the level. It is all worth it though as i just absolutely had a blast playing it. I am still not done. I wanna keep playing. I have played 30 hours or so of it. But i wanna keep playing it. The writing is so fantasic and i don't see how they can screw this up so far. Some people have complained that JonTron is lending his voice to the game as a receptionist, lemme tell you that is a dumb reason to not like a voice actor or a game. His political opinions have nothing to do with his talent as a comedian and voice actor/writer. It is immature. This is an excellent game i would give it ten if not for the problems i talked about, but no game is perfect. I hope they make a sequel. Expand

A Hat in Time is a delightful and whimsical platformer that successfully captures the essence of classic 3D platforming games from the bygone era. Developed by Gears for Breakfast, this game manages to strike the perfect balance between nostalgia and innovation, offering a charming and memorable experience that will captivate both newcomers and fans of the genre.

One of the first things that stands out about A Hat in Time is its gorgeous art style. The game boasts a vibrant and colorful aesthetic that feels like a love letter to the golden age of 3D platformers. Each world you visit is beautifully crafted, with attention to detail and a distinct personality. From the cozy, forest-filled hub world to the bizarre and whimsical environments, every level is a visual treat.

The gameplay mechanics in A Hat in Time are a joy to experience. Controlling Hat Kid, the game's adorable protagonist, feels tight and responsive. The variety of hats she can equip adds a layer of versatility to her abilities, allowing for creative approaches to platforming challenges. The level design is cleverly crafted, with a mix of challenging platforming sequences, engaging puzzles, and entertaining boss fights that keep you on your toes. Each level is unique and offers its own set of mechanics and objectives, preventing the game from ever feeling repetitive.

The narrative of A Hat in Time is surprisingly engaging, offering a whimsical and lighthearted story that gradually unfolds as you progress through the game. The characters you encounter are colorful and memorable, and their interactions with Hat Kid bring a sense of life and personality to the game world. The humor is often charming and genuinely funny, creating an enjoyable atmosphere throughout the adventure.

The game's soundtrack deserves a special mention. Composed by Pascal Michael Stiefel, the music perfectly complements the game's whimsical nature, evoking a sense of wonder and adventure. Each track is carefully crafted to match the tone and theme of the levels, enhancing the overall experience and immersing the player even further into the game world.

While A Hat in Time offers an incredibly enjoyable experience, it's not without a few minor flaws. The camera controls, while generally functional, can sometimes be a bit finicky and cause frustrating moments. Additionally, a few technical hiccups and occasional frame rate drops can momentarily disrupt the otherwise smooth gameplay.

Overall, A Hat in Time is an absolute delight for fans of 3D platformers. Its charming art style, engaging gameplay mechanics, well-crafted levels, and captivating soundtrack make for an unforgettable experience. Despite a few minor flaws, the game shines with its attention to detail, creative design, and pure nostalgic appeal. Whether you're a long-time fan of the genre or a newcomer looking for a whimsical adventure, A Hat in Time is an absolute must-play that will leave you with a smile on your face.

Describing games like Rayman 2, Banjo Tooie, and Mario Sunshine as My childhood is an understatement. What luck then do I find a kickstarter for a game that claims to take inspiration from not only that genre, but the mentality and spirit from the Golden days of my youth. Naturally, I backed it and began to patiently wait. Come about half a decade later and it’s finally here, a bit after the other large kickstarter 3D collectathon revival game Yooka Laylee. If you’ve read my review on that then you’ll know that while not terrible or anything, that game failed to really hook me and I left it quite disappointed. I then began to fear that the game I kickstarted before was going to end up as a similar flop.

Thankfully my fears were averted as I booted the game up for the first time and began to play. Exploring the controls was a bit of a challenge at first, and figuring out the quirks of our protagonist’s moves took some getting used to. But once I got the hang of it I found myself dashing, double jumping, sprinting and animation canceling my way all around a quirky and playful word that enticed me to find all of its secrets. The game’s music and world is what really sells it, I found myself simply standing or sitting around and appreciating the game’s atmosphere, something I rarely do in any game.

What I like most about the game is how much it loves it’s inspiration. You might scoff at that and think “But Yooka Laylee did the same thing and you didn’t like THAT game!”. No it did not. Between the constant fourth wall jokes and taking the piss out of itself, YL felt more like a parody of its contemporaries rather than a revival. It felt insulting and disrespectful: while at the same time blatantly pandering to the nostalgia blinded fanboys who claim Banjo Kazooie was flawless and any evolution is heresy.

But I digress; Hat in time shows it’s love for those games not by simply parroting them; flaws and all; but instead finding the best in them and figuring out what worked, while also taking a critical eye to what didn’t, or might not anymore. It isn’t lost in the past while making fun of itself, it trusts that the player will meet it halfway and give it a chance, and deliver it does. I haven’t felt this way playing a game since… well those games from my childhood actually.

The missions are varied, the progression is relatively open ended while also being quite simple, the moves you earn as the game goes on are always useful at any time in the game (With MAYBE one exception that feels a little contrived), the characters are sometimes funny, often sympathetic, and almost alway charming in their own way. The voice acting was an interesting touch, but I’m not confident in saying that it was essential, and frankly sometimes it can be a bit trite. Thankfully if you don’t like it or just don’t care you can turn it off, or even replace it with something a bit more nostalgic if you find the right secret.

Don’t mistake it as nothing but a saccharine romp all the way through. The various places you go all offer up different kinds of experiences and challenges. A surprising amount of levels involve a rudimentary stealth mechanic, some will test your ability to explore and traverse, while others offer straightforward platforming challenges. There’s plenty of skipping around being happy to be sure, but there’s also some real laughs, offbeat silliness, heartfelt sincerity, and even a few actual scares along the way. Against all odds, by the ending I felt myself genuinely touched by the game, and that’s high praise coming from someone like me.

What I can’t say however is that it’s perfect. The sectioned off design ala Mario 64/Sunshine is the kind of structure that I feel was a bit dated, though it’s much less egregious than those examples. Even once you get used to the controls there are a few quirks about them that I feel could have used ironing out. (Ex. Can’t move after you slide, have to JUMP out?) The camera also sometimes clips through walls or spazzes out if it moves at the wrong angle. Some parts of the game seem like they have a notable lack of polish. The main story seems to be a bit short and not as demanding on players, and overall it might be a bit too much on the easy side, especially if you’ve played the games that it aspires to. Then again, it’s less challenging difficulty suits its overall feel-good atmosphere and childlike tone. It’s not really meant to push your limits unless you seek those challenges out yourself.

All in all, A Hat in Time succeeds where Yooka Laylee fails: Giving that spark of wonder and joy. Short and flawed as it may be, Hat in Time delivers on the promise of what it means to run, jump, and fly through a world worth exploring. The game is overflowing with charm, heart and soul, a passion and love for games matched only by us, the player.

Well color me surprised. I did not expect to have this much fun with this, especially after the disappointment that was Yooka-Lele. Onto the review then

Pros: -The graphics while not groundbreaking or anything are perfect for a game like this. The cutesy animation and the bright colors make the world feel so alive -The level design is absolutely great. The game is not open world but

    Pros:
-The graphics while not groundbreaking or anything are perfect for a game like this. The cutesy animation and the bright colors make the world feel so alive
-The level design is absolutely great. The game is not open world but the levels are so massive you can get lost in collecting all of the interesting doo-hickeys around the map. It's nice to see how much effort the devs put into the levels
-The gameplay (while your basic Mario 64-ish 3d platformer) is done really well. Everything you do is satisfying thanks to the buttery smooth movement and controls.

    Cons:
-Now just like most of these indie games the game is pretty short which hurts the replayability a little bit
-I did run into a couple of bugs and even a game breaking crash.

Despite those small flaws anybody who's a fan of collectathons should get this. It's fun and addictive. Mafia reccomends

A well-made, polished 3D platformer, one that has tons of charm and character to it, something that's vital to this genre. Clearly inspired by older 3D platformers, A Hat In Time manages to innovate. Unlike some modern 3D platformers inspired by older ones, A Hat In Time knows what to be inspired by. Amazing character and world design is vital, and it's what makes the experience a unique one. But being inspired by classics does not mean copying them. The gameplay in these older titles hasn't aged well, and the developers of A Hat In Time understood this, and refined and modernized the gameplay to make it look, feel and play like a 2017 game.

A Hat In Time is the perfect example of how a 3D platformer with inspiration from classics should be done in 2017.

It's a rather short experience, but there's some replay value because the missions are rather enjoyable, and the areas, though small, offer enough freedom to make it worth playing twice. One playthrough will take you about 7 hours. For the asking price, that might seem like a bit lackluster. It would be if the game was unpolished and bland, but it's not. The experience is 7 hours of enjoyment and satisfaction that I will remember for some time.

    voto 80/100.
Platform carino, originale la scelta dei mondi open-world con missioni.
Il misto action-platform è il mio genere preferito ma proprio per questo risulto molto critico a riguardo.
A Hat in time è uno dei migliori indie del 2017.

Some bullet points because I'm lazy, good music. good graphics for an indie game, decent level design, not the best optimization (not bad, I just think it could've been better), decent level design, fine voice acting, fun gameplay, fine keyboard and mouse controls, occasionally annoying camera (really only happened once or twice).

In the end, A Hat In Time features enough charm to overcome its shortcomings. If you can live with the unreliable camera, then you'll find a game that offers a pleasant platforming experience, tons of secrets to uncover, and a good amount of abilities to experiment with. The variety of environments and activities is appreciated, as are some of the breaks from platforming norms. The characters may be the main reason for playing the gamefrom beginning to end, just to see what they'll say or do next. For fans of platformers, A Hat In Time is well worth your time.

A Hat in Time proudly doesn’t shy from showing its inspirations from the 3D platform classics while radiating its own unique personality thanks to charmingly designed worlds (although we could do with a bit more of them!). It is unfortunate then that precise jumping is never as… precise as it should be. Even though it may not hinder the enjoyment by much it is nevertheless a shortcoming in an otherwise especially enjoyable experience.

A great game from a genre that we see so rarely on PC. It’s not too demanding, but it’s pure joy to play, as it’s charming, cheerful, full of stuff to gather and uncover and does a lot to keep you engaged all the time. Not all levels were designed to the same high standard, but even in its weaker moments A Hat in Time is still good. At its best it really shines. [13/2017, p.60]
