Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted packs in everything fans loved about the original game, plus lots more. It’s a deep strategy game for older players and a whimsical introduction to tower defense gameplay for younger demographics. All of that, plus a price point of only $20, make Replanted a must-buy, and the ultimate version of a classic I’ll be revisiting again and again.

While it can be played perfectly well with a controller, the Switch 2 version does also have mouse controls, which are a great fit for all the scrolling and planting you need to do, in addition to GameShare functionality for the multiplayer modes. Its focus on being a remaster of the first Plants vs. Zombies means it doesn’t have all of the new plant types introduced in later sequels. Still, it’s a great tower defense entry point and a welcome reminder of how much we rely on Mother Nature, even during a zombie outbreak.

Once Electronic Arts can address the music and accessibility issues, Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted on Nintendo Switch 2 will be essential. Right now, it feels like a great but flawed version of a classic. I appreciate the work that went into implementing Game Share and mouse controls on Switch 2 though.

If you've never given the original game a chance, now's the time to jump into the most frenetic battles in the iconic garden. While it's not perfect, it at least delivers on the entertainment factor.

Overall, I find myself really loving Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted. Its cute and quirky character designs are infectiously charming, and the gameplay is simple but effective. The graphics are easy on the eyes and help make the character designs shine. It’s a bummer that there were problems with the controls at launch, but even with those issues, it wasn't enough to prevent the game from being a botanical blast.

Overall, Plants vs Zombies: Replanted is an enjoyable trip down memory lane. Do I recommend buying over other versions available elsewhere? No, I don't. But if you're a Nintendo Switch user and are willing to pay the $20 entry fee, you'll likely find some decent enjoyment out of it.

This is Plants vs. Zombies as you know and love it, in the same manner as you can still easily access it elsewhere, meaning it's not really necessary to blow £18 to get that same experience once again, even if it does now have a shiny coat of paint brushed over it.
