Age of Imprisonment’s plethora of options helps elevate it as an enjoyable Warriors experience. On the other hand, it suffers from its notable roster absences, especially for Zelda fans, since it’s common to go to Warriors games not for their canon-compliant stories but for the opportunity to throw fan-favorite characters at floods of enemies. Knowing what to expect helps alleviate the disappointment, and the Warriors format works wonders at conveying Tears of the Kingdom’s Imprisoning War. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment’s seriousness and polish help it overcome its shortcomings, making it an overall good time. And like with most Warriors games, a good time is usually good enough.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment builds on what its two predecessors did and does it better, more ambitiously, and with a much more prominent plot, delivering the best "musou" experience on the Nintendo Switch 2 and a major addition to the Zelda universe. Thanks to the variety of quests, a more in depth combat that requires greater strategic thought, and the updates that render the experience more demanding and enveloping, Age of Imprisonment proves to be the best of its series, topped off by a near perfect performance on the Switch 2.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment finally gives Zelda her due, even if she already had her first time in the spotlight with last year’s Echoes of Wisdom. This journey feels much more meaningful, providing Zelda with a sense of agency and urgency within the overall Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom lore.
