An unusual mixture of rhythmic cooking sim and turn-based RPG elements that can be satisfying, even if its execution isn’t always quite ideal.

With a skilfully written story in a small but immersive world filled with charm, emotion, and more than a few blush-inducing jokes, Dosa Divas takes a warm and meaningful approach to linking food, family, community, and memory. You'll be sweet on this.

Even though it’s too short, Dosa Divas is still an adventure I’m happy to recommend. It’s colorful, contends with some unique themes, and is all told through a colorful lens we need more of in gaming. So long as you can look past the shortcomings, this is a wonderful JRPG from Outerloop Games.

Dosa Divas is a culinary adventure worth going on, its unique flavour combining solid turn-based combat, a simple cooking minigame, and a story that will make you reflect on your own relationships. It's a game that explores how food and meals can be experiences that bring people together. If nothing else, Dosa Divas may inspire you to get in the kitchen, put some dishes together and share those meals with others.

All of the features that Outerloop has incorporated work as intended, and while there is a bit of jank in the movement and exploration, it is a generally well put together game. But it also feels like there could have been much more here, or rather, a grander focus on a few design features and an elimination of others to make for a more refined creative vision. As it is, Dosa Divas is a perfectly acceptable game, but it had the potential to be much more.

The idea behind Dosa Divas is sound and I like Amani and Samara as individuals, but the overall experience is so uneven. The narrative structure feels off, with poor pacing and an odd way of trying to tell the story and foster connections. The QTEs for combat and cooking can get demanding in some situations, though in others they sort of exist and always feel the same. By the end of it, I found myself wondering if maybe it would have all worked better as a graphic novel that could have better told the tale instead.

With a tidy 8-10 hour runtime, three unique regions to explore, and dozens of drool-worthy dishes to create, Dosa Divas is an approachable and appealing genre mash-up. It’s a perfectly bite-sized RPG to spend a weekend with.
