A prison stripped of its gloomy aura – everyone is quite friendly and helpful, and the anthropomorphic animals don't help with the atmosphere. There aren't enough days to play, which also detracts from the atmosphere. It was a rather interesting idea, with a logical progression of our actions and the need to appear at specific locations and try to figure out patterns – much like in Prisoner of War.

Overall, Back to the Dawn is fantastic. There’s so much to do that you’ll be kept busy for many, many hours. I found myself thinking about my in-game plans before real-life bed – it just gets in your head. The retro graphics, fun characters, and seemingly endless quests all add towards a game that’s well worth your time.

A clearly ambitious mix of sandbox sim and RPG concepts with well-written characters, but you really need to invest in it fully to get the most out of it.

Back to the Dawn ended up being a bit of a mixed bag for me. I loved the story and aesthetics, especially the music. It works wonderfully as a choose your own adventure-style adventure game. Time management, puzzle solving, and minigames are all fantastic. But the CRPG elements felt tacked-on. Back to the Dawn was probably initially envisioned as a CRPG, but grew into something different. With a bit more polish, focus, and elegance, it could be a really fantastic experience. If everything I’ve shared sounds good to you, then definitely don’t hesitate to give Back to the Dawn a few playthroughs.

Back to the Dawn is a fantastic TTRPG with more systems than you’ll know what to do with at first, a huge cast of interesting characters and enough replayability to keep you coming back over and over again.
