It has a severe case of first-game-idus, but Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64 serves as a great introduction to a very boastful and beloved franchise.

A fighting game curtesy of Kirby mastermind Masahiro Sakurai featuring an assortment of Nintendo characters. The concept alone was enough to ensure this would be a surefire hit. When compared to future games in the series, yeah there's not much reason to return to this game outside of nostalgia or wanting to see the roots of the series, but that doesn't mean the game still doesn't have worth.
This is a fighting game featuring various Nintendo icons, both recognizable and more obscure. What set this game apart from other fighters (outside of the roster) was in its combat. Rather than traditionally pulling off a complicated string of button combos and directional inputs, the game focuses on two primary attack buttons, and hitting the analog stick in different directions in combination with the attack inputs to achieve different results. This set-up makes it very easy for beginners to ease into the mechanics, and even if you aren't very good at the game you can still stand a chance, and thus can make it more enjoyable than your average fighter. There are 12 characters total, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Aside from a couple of clone fighters, it's a well-varied roster combined with equally healthy number of stages that are all fun to fight on.

The game overall is pretty light on content, especially in single player. You've got the traditional training mode and a single player arcade mode where you fight through a set series of battles. There's also Target Practice and Board the Platforms which can test the platforming and movesets of each character. While the single player offerings are fine enough, they certainly aren't the reason you go back to this game. Obviously, multiplayer is where SSB shines. If you've got four controllers and four friends, your in for some of the best multiplayer battles the N64 has to offer. There are free-for-alls, team battles, special battles, item customization. It's a really healthy offering.

So, while I'll certainly recommend any other Smash Bros. game over this one, the original here is still a great game in its own right. For N64 owners and Smash players, it's a must own. If you can get past its dated exterior, you'll be in for a good time.

Smash Bros is my all-time favorite series, and this is the one that started it all (obvs, I know). This game was nothing but a concept tester. The controls and mechanics are inferior to better fighting games from it's time. The stages are decent but there is only a small amount. Some of the stages are still used in today's games and at SMB events. Small amount of characters to choose from but they did make some good choices for who to include. Least exciting game from

This game is amazing, for 1999 standards. It would get a 10 if it had better single player content. But this kept me entertained for an entire year, and I recently beat a level 9 CPU.

It's so weird going back and seeing how much the gameplay has evolved over time. Pretty neat to look back on.

Smash 64 is by far the most unique smash game. It may not appeal to certain people, but to the smash community, this game is a masterpiece. the game is alright and its a good start for an amazing series but this one has to be the worst of the bunch yes it was made first but i don't really ever feel like coming back to it the other ones are better in every way the single player isn't fun the multiplayer is the highlight and its pretty good not great though. 6/10 (good)

Love this game. What is annoying is the fact you can't use the D-pad to move your character and can only use the joystick, which is kind of a pain in the ass to use.

Almost a masterpiece. Very fun to play with friends. But playing it now I would like more caracters and levels. Sure it donsen´t have to have 80+ caracters as in the new one but it is still a little to few.

This game is fun. yes there may only be 16 characters to start off with but it's the first game. I first played the game back when I was 9 years old and the gamecube was already out but I loved the game anyways. There isn't too much content in there especially since other smash games have more content so you will mostly play the game to battle against your friends but if you're a kirby fan, you will be happy due to a certain character being the final boss in the single player mode. I don't have nostalgia for this game, And I don't think it's aged that well. Just play melee. I kind of like the graphics, but they are not the best. There is not a lot of variety, I'm just not the biggest fan.

The combat is revolutionary. The game is an achievement with how it takes so many distinct characters from multiple franchises. The game modes in this game are lacking and there isn't much to do overall. Fun for a few hours but replayability is lacking.

This game started one of the greatest mashup and fighting game series ever made, but it has aged extremely terribly as all the succeeding titles in the series in Melee, Brawl, Wii U, 3DS, and Ultimate are way better overall.

All your Nintendo favourites are beautifully presented in this rather simplistic multiplayer beat 'em up. There's not really enough to it for the single player but a group of friends could have some fun with it.

Very solid game, the graphics are consistent, the game is fast, improve the platform fighter genre, have some of the most recognizable characters on the Nintendo franchise, overall is a good game.

Amazing game at the time, but definitely outdated in this day and age. Every Smash sequel is superior to it so not much reason to go back to it.

  1. A multi-player hit. Believe me people, you and your friends will spend hours on end battling it out to the very end. Whether it's 2 on 2 or if you think you're a badass 3 on 1.
  2. A highly addictive and satisfying game. Super Smash Bros. is a classic game for the Nintendo 64. If you haven't played it or its successor, and there certainly aren't many of you kinds of people, what are you waiting for? Do it!
  3. Fast paced and accessible to everyone. Nintendo of America were mad to consider not releasing this game in the US. Any doubts about it's quality should be cast out of your mind. It's fun, addictive and it's got a superb multi-player mode.
