All your Nintendo favourites are beautifully presented in this rather simplistic multiplayer beat 'em up. There's not really enough to it for the single player but a group of friends could have some fun with it.

The combat is revolutionary. The game is an achievement with how it takes so many distinct characters from multiple franchises. The game modes in this game are lacking and there isn't much to do overall. Fun for a few hours but replayability is lacking.

A fighting game curtesy of Kirby mastermind Masahiro Sakurai featuring an assortment of Nintendo characters. The concept alone was enough to ensure this would be a surefire hit. When compared to future games in the series, yeah there's not much reason to return to this game outside of nostalgia or wanting to see the roots of the series, but that doesn't mean the game still doesn't have worth.
This is a fighting game featuring various Nintendo icons, both recognizable and more obscure. What set this game apart from other fighters (outside of the roster) was in its combat. Rather than traditionally pulling off a complicated string of button combos and directional inputs, the game focuses on two primary attack buttons, and hitting the analog stick in different directions in combination with the attack inputs to achieve different results. This set-up makes it very easy for beginners to ease into the mechanics, and even if you aren't very good at the game you can still stand a chance, and thus can make it more enjoyable than your average fighter. There are 12 characters total, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Aside from a couple of clone fighters, it's a well-varied roster combined with equally healthy number of stages that are all fun to fight on.

The game overall is pretty light on content, especially in single player. You've got the traditional training mode and a single player arcade mode where you fight through a set series of battles. There's also Target Practice and Board the Platforms which can test the platforming and movesets of each character. While the single player offerings are fine enough, they certainly aren't the reason you go back to this game. Obviously, multiplayer is where SSB shines. If you've got four controllers and four friends, your in for some of the best multiplayer battles the N64 has to offer. There are free-for-alls, team battles, special battles, item customization. It's a really healthy offering.

So, while I'll certainly recommend any other Smash Bros. game over this one, the original here is still a great game in its own right. For N64 owners and Smash players, it's a must own. If you can get past its dated exterior, you'll be in for a good time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Smash Bros, is the beginning of a series of games where the most emblematic characters of the Japanese company would begin to fight each other, in which characters like Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, Donkey Kong or Samus enter the battle. Which has only four options where you can play individually against a series of opponents besides making 3 different types of bunos, even in the end you will have to fight against the final boss called Master Hand, another of the modes of games that it has is the second option of several players, in this case only 4 players have the possibility of playing against them having a 12-player roster in which I also forgot to mention previously that when starting a single fight or multiplayer have the option to modify the difficulty, this either if you want to play with CPUs, our third option is the socions in which you have the access to raise or lower the volume of the game in addition to changing the sounds monotono or stereo mode , finally, the fourth option only describes the characteristics and origins of the characters in the gamplay super smash bros offers us a new way to fight instead of the life of the fighter being a simple bar, this is replaced by a percentage, each time we do a lot of damage to our character, the percentage increases, in addition to have the possibility to fall in the ecenario, also has small items that will allow us to do more damage and also have an advantage, also others help to cure or even help the fighter based on pokeballs, to end the game despite being of low budget, in addition to the battles are not well polished and there are few mistakes, Super Smash Bros is not a bad game and I would recommend it a lot if you like both fighting games or platforms, so in my humble opinion, Super Smash Bros deserves an 8. What started off as "Kakuto-Gemu Ryuo," a simple fighter with no Nintendo characters whatsoever, transformed into a gigantic, wildly-popular fighting game that led to huge sales, a number of sequels, and a big presence in the competitive gaming scene. But after 17 years (at the time of writing), does the game fans refer to as "Smash 64" still hold up? Yes, indeed, it does!
Even now, "Super Smash Bros." is incredibly fun to play, it works really well, it has some great Nintendo references, and it's surprisingly pretty balanced (even the weakest characters in the game are still pretty good). Not only that, but it's pretty fun to watch at a high-level, as the combo potential is so massive in the game. Not a ton of people play it competitively (especially compared to "Super Smash Bros. Melee"), but the people that do play it at a high level make it extremely exciting.
It's not perfect, though. The single player is a bit lacking, the character models haven't aged as wonderfully, and the game is kinda light on content (blame this on the fact that the game was essentially an experiment).
All told, though, "Super Smash Bros." is a wonderful time and, even if you've played the sequels, it's absolutely worth playing.

The gameplay is easy to pick up, but difficult to master. Instead of complex combos, attacks are mapped to the A&B buttons in conjunction with the control stick. This is simple and extremely satisfying.
There are 12 Nintendo All-Stars (4 need to be unlocked) here to beat the heck out of each other in 9 (1 needs to be unlocked) varied and fun stages from Nintendo's game library (why no F-Zero or EarthBound stage though?). Saffron City in particular is a blast as you hop over the rooftops and avoid Pokemon who peek out from a door on the center building.
The single player in the game is lacking as it is restricted to target smash, board the platforms, and the 1P mode where you take on multiple fighters and make it to a final boss. Still, you can play the game alone in the vs. mode with computer opponents.
The items in the vs. mode help make Super Smash Bros. a blast during multiplayer, but unfortunately you need to unlock an item switch in order to turn them off. This will turn off more competitive minded players from starting the game, and even casual/intermediate players will likely be disappointed that you need to unlock such a basic feature.
The graphics are quite crude (even for N64 standards) but they still have a charm to them and the music is memorable and contains many remixes from iconic Nintendo titles.
All this being said, Super Smash Bros. is a still a great game that spawned one of the best fighting game series of all-time. If you have never played Super Smash Bros. and have a cheap way to pick up this game, it might be your best bet for starting out. Even if you started with Super Smash Bros. Melee like I did, there is still a lot to appreciate here.

I had little to know fun with low selection of characters and BORING mini-games i'll give it a 6/10 since it's an oldie Expand

Super Smash Bros. is a fun game to play. It was amazing at its time, and it is pretty fun today. However, the game qualities do not hold up today, and it'd be better money worth your money to pick up a copy of the Wii U or 3DS version.

With a lack of charged smashing, this game requires more skill than Brawl or Melee. What i mean is, you can't just stand on the side of the stage waiting for the player to recover back on the stage with a smash waiting for them.

This was the epicenter of the expansion of modern day fighting games and still considered by some as the best super smash bros game in the series. Nintendo characters always had more charm for me than marvel superhero fighting games. Tekken 3 may be one of the only fighting games that is better.

It is an old game so obviously its graphics are not the best but where it misses in that department bringing in the biggest Nintendo characters to dual it out this would be the beginning of a great series of games to come. Agreeably one of the most fun N64 games ever created.

THE GOOD: Fluid combat, start of a fantastic fighting game series. The game is memorable in its own right.

THE BAD: This game simply hasn't aged as well as its sequels on the Gamecube and Wii. It also lacks the large amount of content and game modes of its successors. The character cast is also barebones compared to them. This classic title can admittedly be fun for a few hours, but

Target smash is dull, the platforms can go f*** themselves, racing to the finish isn't so bad. The characters are really weak but the worst fighting character in this game is Jigglypuff, oh my ****ing god where do I even begin... why does Jigglypuff suck you may ask? well, she's slow, her punches and kicks are weak, and her sing is irritating at times.

Ocarina of time is one of those games that at the time was really long and needed to be so because of the story. Super Smash Bros. is a beat em' up and that is why I played it, I finally got to fight my brother and no one could stop me. I am really hard on Nintendo because their games were my childhood, I played and still play old 64 and SNES games cause of the simple fact that they are really fun. Smash Bros. is the original fighter for me but it has so many problems. The one problem that makes me kinda annoyed is that the game is way to short. I get that its made for multiplayer but that doesn't make me forget that I had all the characters in less than ten hours. I also hate that it looks so bad, I get that it looks that way because of the lack of graphical technology at the time but it really doesn't hold up. There is no story either but like I said earlier I like that it just as is, the songs were all from there own games which is really awesome and can at times make you switch out games cause lets face it Pokemon stadium a little bit more fun than this game. In the end this is a really great game that has one the best cult followings I have ever seen for a Nintendo game it has been made just as popular as the characters that you play as, this is a must play for all gamers. There are a some amount of stages to choose from, at least one from each character (Hyrule Castle from the Legend of Zelda). Each certain accomplishment earns more stages and characters; both have a limited amount to unlock. For those who don't have anyone to play with, they can defeat CPU characters to compensate in multiplayer, but it is not the same as going against human opponents; this can eventually can lead to a dull experience. However, the solo player are able to play single player mode, which is a ladder-style type of game; going against opponents one by one until you reach the final boss. The game is based on some wit and a good deal of skill and that is what makes it such a great time. Every match had me on the edge of my seat and what makes it even better is that it is with all my favorite Nintendo characters! Such an original idea that has been attempted again and again by different companies, but never got it quite as right as this gem! There are only a few minor negative things I would have to say about it. First, I dislike how limited the game is both with story and characters/stages. Second, the price tag, while definitely worth it, will usually cost a pretty penny at around $30 due to great demand. Lastly, some of the characters feel very powerful over the others in multiplayer such as DK, Samus, and Kirby; all with moves that take over the other players unfairly. The negative aspects listed are really minor inconveniences in the whole of the game. Overall, I highly suggest this to anyone who likes good games, which is pretty much everyone! Expand

The multiplayer is the strongest part to this game, and offers fun times with your friends while not getting too old. The low-budget music also sounds great, and is pretty catchy, although I do prefer Melee's and Brawl's music over this. Level design is nice and gameplay is fun and addicting. While I do think this game safely earns third place to its two predecessors and is better for those who would rather experience nostalgia, it's still an awesomely fun game. Super Smash Bros. is a wonderful four-player party game with a low barrier for entry, but plenty of depth to separate players. It's frantic pace makes it easily enjoyable for competitive, reflex-based gameplay that holds up to this day. Unfortunately, the game's single-player experience doesn't entertain nearly as well, being far too short and quite easy.

While the single player mode is lacking, that is not why you purchase this game; it would be akin to criticizing Sonic the Hedgehog for having weak puzzles. The game is a party title, plain and simple, meant to be played with a room as packed as possible. And in that environment, the environment for which it was truly made, Smash Bros excels.

  3. Fast paced and accessible to everyone. Nintendo of America were mad to consider not releasing this game in the US. Any doubts about it's quality should be cast out of your mind. It's fun, addictive and it's got a superb multi-player mode.
