I went into Wuthering Waves fully expecting to write it off, thinking it would be a pale imitation of the big one, but it just isn’t. It pains me to say, but it is better. Comparing it to another feels like an insult, Wuthering Waves is just really fun in and of itself. I will be playing more of this, and I wholeheartedly recommend everyone give it a spin. The gameplay is incredibly fun, it looks beautiful, and you don’t need to drop a penny to win. Also, you can pet and feed at least one cat. Probably should have led with that and saved myself the time.

Despite a somewhat rocky launch, Wuthering Waves introduces us to an exciting new world with plenty of potential, where dodge mechanics make for incredibly fun combat, and engrossing exploration keeps us coming back.

Wuthering Waves distinguishes itself from rival free-to-play action-RPGs by featuring clever, hard-hitting combat and terrific climbing and parkour abilities that encourage exploration.

Wuthering Waves is an action RPG with gacha elements packed with a solid and fun combat system, full of interlocking mechanisms that work beautifully both using touch controls and, of course, a Bluetooth controller.

Wuthering Waves offers an exciting and fast-paced combat system with the potential for further optimization. Overall, it does show promise but could benefit from refinements in various aspects to reach its full potential.

In its current state, Wuthering Waves is a generic open-world gacha with very few interesting and pleasant moments that shine in world exploration and battle system. If you were looking for a game with a deep, engaging narrative, you might want to give WuWa some more time to cook. However, if you were interested in a title that would hold your interest for a few evenings as you explore the world and throw your cast of characters into dynamic combat and various puzzles, then you will feel right at home.

In Genshin Impact, I enjoyed my initial meetings with Amber, Jean, and Diluc, and even while I didn’t care for Venti, his character was at least entertaining. However, I didn’t feel that way about a single member of Wuthering Waves’ cast. Everyone felt generic with slightly different haircuts or clothes, and the world felt like it was built from stock sci-fi aspects. Too much of the rest of the game falls flat for its great combat to carry it across the finish line.
