Benjamin has built a spectacular flying machine to take him and his friends around the world. During one of the first flight sessions something goes wrong. The youngsters have no choice but to parachute themselves to safety.

After an exhausting swim Alex, Paul and Stella end up on a distant island. Barehanded and with no trace of Benjamin.

Vulture Island is a platform adventure with a distinct focus on exploration to tickle your curiosity. Rather than stacking up high scores and running towards the end of each level, you get to roam freely in an open world and explore caves, swamps, temples, pirate ships and more.

You collect objects along your way, solve puzzles and talk to NPCs, all while being wrapped inside the platform gameplay mechanism we all have to come to love since the golden era of 8-bit computers and consoles.

A challenging retro platformer whose nonlinear structure is both a rewarding aspect and a potential source of frustration.

Despite the lack of direction and precise controls, we enjoyed our time on Vulture Island. Each individual level, from the gorilla-guarded jungle to the seagull-infested pier, is a charming slice of an oddly cohesive whole thanks to the shared collection of puzzles and items scattered around the world.

While there's a lot that's odd about Vulture Island, I really like the game here. The puzzles are fetch quest type stuff, but their uses are just devious enough that they will make you feel stupid for not figuring it out sooner. And the whole game's clunkiness just kind of gives the game a particular character to it.

An homage to the classic 2D platform adventure games from the 8 and 16 bit era, from Super Mario Bros to Alex Kidd.

I really wanted to like Vulture Island, especially since it was made by Donut Games, makers of the excellent Traps n' Gemstones. That, and the game wears a lot really great inspirational touchstones on its sleeve. Unfortunately though, I spent the majority of my time with the game dying repeatedly or looking at a walkthrough and rolling my eyes at puzzle solutions, which was not particularly fun or satisfying.

The platforming ramps up in difficulty reasonably well. The puzzles are a bit obscure but will eventually reward even trial and error. I thought that the art style is charmingly retro.

Overall, an entertaining game but not as deep as Donut Games' other somewhat similar title "Traps & Gemstones".
