    I have played both Advance War and Uniwars and highly disagree that this is a solid clone. The only similarity this game has is that it is a turn based strategy game. I would say both are equally fun in their own way. Uniwar has 3 difference races you can pick with each race having units unique to their respective races. There is a high tech alien race, human race, and a biological-like race (similiar to Starcraft). The game is played similiar to like a turn-based Starcraft game on hexagonal tiles. For the price (I paid $1), its a great game. If you are into these types of games, I'd definitely suggest trying it out. There are a few improvements I wish they could make: 1) Allow us to set the AI difficulty when creating games against bot opponents, 2) Allow us to create a game with uneven opponents (ex. 2 humans vs. 4 bots).… Full Review »

I've played the game for about four years now, and it's become my #1It's unbelievable to me that UniWar has NO love here on Metacritic. I've played the game for about four years now, and it's become my #1 favorite thing about owning my iPod. Ever since playing Advance Wars: Dual Strike for over 300 hours, I've searched far and wide for games that will equally sate my thirst for solid turn-based strategy/tactics. I spent hours on the GBA AW titles. I played over 100 hours on AW: Days of Ruin. I've spent an eternity playing Civ 4 on my PC. I've played game after game after game of Civ Rev on my iPod and X360. I've played Military Madness on my Wii Virtual Console. I've played Great Little War Game, Mecho Wars, Outwitters, Rad Soldiers, and Rogue Planet on the iPod. I even played Field Commander (PSP) and Daisenryaku 7 (Xbox). While most of those games are good if not great, nothing has filled the void of AW: Dual Strike as well as UniWar.

    Before getting to the good stuff, three caveats:

    1. If you're looking for a game with a terrific story, this is NOT it. The campaign has a paper thin narrative that only exists to give you a semblance of purpose for completing what is ultimately a solid training program. And that's fine AW doesn't really have the most amazing story. That's what Fire Emblem is for.

    2. If you're looking for a game with amazing music, this is not it. The music isn't bad, but it isn't great. I actually run the game with the music off and still love it. I have the sound effects off, too. They're not terrible, but the game doesn't exist to provide an amazing aural experience. This is a game about strategy. It's not like chess boards come with sound effects and theme songs.

    3. If you're looking for a game with 3d graphics, this game is not it. UniWar has sprites. And they look fine. Let's be serious Street Fighter 2 was a great game, and Street Fighter 4 is a great game. One has sprites, one has 3d models. They're both great not b/c of graphics they're great b/c of gameplay. Just like UniWar.

    Which brings me to the good stuff.

    If you're looking for a game that has deep, balanced gameplay, THIS IS YOUR GAME. Xpressed took two of the best strategy games ever and mashed them together. I'm referring to the aforementioned Advance Wars and StarCraft. Like AW, UniWar is a turn-based war game. The point of each game is to wipeout the enemy by capturing their bases. Each base provides a set amount of credits per turn, and they also serve as factories for most of the game's units. In addition to regular bases, there are also naval bases; these provide no income, but they allow players to deploy ships. It's a fun mixture of elements. And unlike some turn-based strategy games, this is not a squad-based game. Instead, you can build your army however you want with the resources you acquire. There are endless options of how you might proceed to victory. Very fun stuff.

    Unlike AW, UniWar has no Commanding Officers. Instead, Xpressed emulated StarCraft and built the game around three races. There's the Sapiens (Terrans), Khraleans (Zerg) and Titans (Protoss). Each army has distinct strengths, and all three provide a virtually equal chance at victory. And the three races act as a sort of rock/paper/scissors for each other, as each one possesses a repair/convert unit that can be used to convert soldiers from another army into yours. But each race can only convert the soldiers of one other race ie khraleans convert sapiens, sapiens convert titans, titans convert khraleans this lends yet another layer of strategy to an already deep game.

    What really puts UniWar over the top is the online gameplay. Xpressed delivered bigtime with a very easy-to-use and intuitive online gaming model. You can set up new games, join existing games, or simply opt for a random match against someone of similar skill. Each game you join will have a timed element, meaning you must take your turn in a set amount of time or risk being skipped. Many games have a 1 day time limit, though some have 3 day, 12 hour or even 3 min time limits. Many games are 1v1, but if you like to team it up, there are 2v2, 3v3 or 4v4 games, and it's very easy to invite friends to play in your games. To top off the rad online features, UniWar can send you push or email notifications when it's your turn, so hopefully you'll never get skipped. It's a slick, elegant setup.

    And, if you're with friends and away from internet, you can use the pass-to-play mode or simply go against the AI. it's pretty tough, trust me.

    Other cool stuff you can do with the online/offline modes if you're waging a tense online war, you can exit the game, setup an offline 1v1 match, and test stuff out before trying it in a real battle. It's a sneaky great thing.

    Overall, UniWar is a great turn-based strategy game. While it doesn't have the best story, sound or graphics, it has solid gameplay and excellent online features. And it costs $0.99. My buddy said it best: if you like UniWar, you LOVE UniWar. I agree it's a great game.    … Full Review »
