I’m overwhelmingly charmed by Peridot, despite its shortcomings. I still like to check in on my adult dots, even though there’s nothing left to do with them now but breed, and I love taking pictures of them next to my cats to post on my social media. The charm of Peridot’s cute creatures will bring a lot of curious players in the door, and if Niantic can build out the pet sim features some more they may even stick around. The tech is impressive and it feels like a platform that can grow and grow, but the cost of breeding is a deal breaker for me. I’ll be watching Peridot with much interest, but for now, I won’t be playing it.

Peridot is a very different title from other Niantic-branded productions. Without the competition offered by Ingress, the capture and above all the collectible aspect that allowed Pokémon GO to marry such an experience perfectly, the new mobile game of the Californian company presents itself at the moment as a rather meager and limiting Tamagotchi, seen that its main - not to say only - objective involves a substantial outlay of real money. If we add to this the numerous bugs and technological malfunctions found during our tests, without underestimating the exaggerated energy expenditure imposed on the batteries of mobile devices, we struggle to imagine a prosperous future for Niantic's albeit very sweet Peridots.
  3. Peridot may find its fan base of Tamagotchi nostalgists, but as it stands the technical issues are too much for me to recommend it to anyone. Until Niantic changes these fundamental issues, there is no way for people to play Peridot in the way the company envisions. And it could be good. The general gameplay of raising and playing with your virtual pet is one that has been successful in the past. I’m just not sure how the breeding aspect will sit with fans.

I don’t mind the breeding aspect, and it sounds like a great way for players who love to collect things to find some fun. But I wish the actual pet part of Peridot was as engrossing. There’s just not that much to do with your dot outside of a few feeding and play sessions each day and snapping some cute pics while you’re out and about. Of course, it’s likely more features are coming — keep in mind Pokémon Go didn’t even get battling until a few years after launch — and this aspect could become much more fleshed out in the future, provided Peridot sticks around for a while (which is not a guarantee). Right now, though, those big puppy dog eyes are doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
