    While it builds on the games that came before, Oceanhorn 3 also changes things up a bit for the franchise in terms of gameplay mechanics as well as character development. But at the end of the day, it still offers the charm the franchise is known for, making for a really fun third entry into the series.

    Speaking of settings, Oceanhorn 3: Legend of the Shadow Sea features a very well-implemented touch control system—immediate and responsive—yet the game truly shines when played with a controller; in our case, the excellent SCUF Nomad. It is a pity, however, that the developers assigned the jump action to the Y button and interaction to the A button—the exact opposite of the long-standing standard in action-platformers—and "fixing" this requires resorting to some rather cumbersome workarounds.

    It’s a well-made game, but lacking in magic. The anodyne character design, lacklustre script, and battles that have challenge but little excitement, conspire to make it feel oddly pedestrian. Still, if you’re craving a decent sized role-player on your phone this certainly manages to tick all the right boxes, even if that’s all it does.
