The game itself has a steep learning curve, so I can not recommend this game to beginners of the genre. New players may often find themselves running out of a precious resource called Dummy Cores. Without Dummy Cores for Dummy Link, these players would find themselves stuck and unable to proceed with the story. It's recommended for new players to read up on Core Hell when starting this game for the first time.
The UI is messy - not great but it gets a passing grade. It seems a bit complex at first, but I think the user would quickly get used to it (assuming they have the time to explore what everything does). If reading isn't your thing, this game might not be up your alley.
Because the game uses a gun naming scheme for characters in the game, it may be a bit difficult trying to talk to friends about the actual characters due to poor name recognition. Names such as Scorpion, Grizzly, and Thompson are easier to remember. On the other hand, names such as G11, OTs-14, WA2000, and LWMMG are more difficult to remember. As such, we always have to double check the name before talking about the gun-personified characters. My overall rating is not based on this aspect of the game, but it's worth considering.
The paper maps for all story and combat missions don't fit with what we actually see when our units are in a battle. It's also too cartoony for its intended audience. As it is now, it seems almost as if the maps' target audience are grade schoolers.
I'd like to point out that the players are always on the defensive side in every battle. Forget about seeing your characters charging toward the enemy's base and blowing everything up heroically. That doesn't exists in this game. What this game has now is more akin to a tower defense game. In other words, the players' units are just staying in one area while shooting down waves after waves of enemies. Ever played Space Marine on Warcraft 3 or Plants vs. Zombies? This game is like that.
What's the point of the character sprites having big bubble heads? Is this an April's Fool joke? Character sprites would look better if not for the big bubble heads. I can not agree with this design choice. It contrasts too greatly with the serious tone of the game.
While this game is good, it is certainly not great. There are just too many design choices that don't make any sense. For example - if we are fighting an offensive battle, then why are we on the defensive when the battle starts? In addition - if the game is taking a serious tone, why do the character sprites have chibi/bubble heads? Lastly, the cartoon paper maps of the out-world don't match with what we see during actual combat. If the developer wants this game to be better, they would have to upgrade the aforementioned assets.
One last thing of note. The customer service that I had received from this developer has been great. Because of my overall satisfaction with this game and their customer service, I had rated it 8/10. There are certainly areas to improve on, and I hope to see those implemented in Girls Frontline 2.… Expand
