    You can use infinite runners as a judge of whether or not you'll like the game, as Combo Quest is pretty similar to them on a basic level - time your screen taps to stay alive as along as possible and start all over again when you die.

    But for all the flaws and inconsistencies with this game that I can point out, I struggle to put this one down. The concept is a ton of fun, and there's definitely some elements of a great game here.

    The idea behind Combo Quest is a good one, and it was actually pretty fun and engaging to tap my way through enemy after enemy. But when I’m forced to repeat the same ten levels (I think level 13 was my best run) ad nauseam just because that’s how the game is… it’s hard not to lose interest.

    Fun, challenging and fast paced game! One of the best pick up and play pixel games. Much better than FLappy bird and swing copters. Worth the 99 cents

    The best thing about this game is the re-playability. I've been playing daily since the weekend and CQ is still super fun. In addition,The best thing about this game is the re-playability.     Can't wait to see what the future holds for this title!

Simplicity as their crux, they shrug away the meat of complex console games while returning to the roots of 16-bit era, where gameplay had to be fine tuned in order to provide replayability, instead of content. This is Combo Quest’s greatest strength and greatest weakness, as it attempts to cater to both hardcore gamers, and non-gamers. What it provides is an original rhythm type action game with an addictive battle system, having the player tap on different colored static blocks, representing attacks and defense, as a bar moves over them from left to right and back, all the while increasing a combo, which increases the speed of the bar and strength of the super combo attack. The battle system is one that is easy to grasp, yet requires a lot of hand eye coordination and practice to master. I would say its simpler than Guitar Hero (if we are to compare rhythm games with blocks), but as deep if not more, omitting multiple tracks for diversity within one track. There is an unparalleled amount of strategy as players must balance building their combo, deciding when to unleash it, and how far they are willing to go – which is all affected by their stats. After an enemy is beaten, the game throws in RPG elements in the form of stat boosts, where the player has to make a choice between three possible upgrades including, max health, max damage, min damage, combo damage, and a full heal. This allows players to experiment with the setup of their character, while the knight changes as his armor and sword become aesthetically more powerful. Admittedly, the battle system is fun, the graphics are beautiful and charismatic, the bosses are memorable, and the RPG elements are a clever addition. However, Combo Quest is a difficult game. If one loses too much life, they are forced to take the full heal, thereby missing the chance for an upgrade, which in order to remain proportionally powerful to the enemies, is often very important. There are health potions to counter act this, but they are few and far between, requiring the defeat of a boss, and an iap in order to increase inventory. And death is permanent, the character’s upgrades are not saved, the player always restarts from the beginning. Though I like the game, and much of its execution is great, I find replability mixed, since every time I become a level 0 knight, instead of a level 30 knight, where I worked so hard to get. Thus, though I yearn myself to play Combo Quest over and over, and I have invested several hours into the game (which is more than the majority of mobile games I play), I find myself hard pressed to return to it without resting for a bit in between long play sessions. Hopefully save points will be added in future updates, because as of the moment Combo Quest is not only difficult (and I like challenge), but can be frustrating and unforgiving to unskilled players. But I am sure that is a quick-fix (pun intended), which will give the game, the proper praise it really deserves, and bring in non-gamers. I also hope for maybe new realms, and the introduction of items for hardcore gamers. That being said, as a 1.0 release, Combo Quest fully deserves my score of a 9/10. Expand
