I wouldn't say a classic was ruined but it wouldn't be very apt or honest to describe this reimagining of a beloved video game as any kind of upgrade.

It now consists of mostly overground battle seiges. One after the other & gosh they suck. Some uninspiring story regarding new characters has been thrown in the mix along with generic anime screen shots & atrocious over-bloated dialogue

And most traumatizing for myself is they took away the cherub. The cherub! Cherubium in all his glory unlike this version's abominable incarnation: a hostile, judgmental hot-headed mess resembling a tacky, low-budget Pitt (Kid Icarus).

As far as side-scrolling play, the graphics have been upgraded to what can best be described as bootleg Symphony of the Night.

I was thrilled when Nintendo dropped it online the same day they announced it. I was looking forward to that feeling of awe back when I first laid eyes upon Actraiser on the SNES as kid. $30 later & I feel as if the soundtrack was the best thing about this title. The music is amazing, I'll give it that.

I wanted to really like this version of a classic video game, I really did. Don't get me wrong, there were times where the gameplay brought actual amusement. Ultimately, nostalgia for the original version of Actraiser won over in the end, 'cuz guess what? That game holds a trillion times better to this version on any day of the year. But again, the music is good. I guess you could use it to soothe you to sleep.

If you’re looking for a carbon copy of the original game with an improved presentation and nothing else of significance added, I’m afraid you may not like Actraiser Renaissance. This isn’t that kind of remake, and I personally don’t think it should have been. But if you’re fine with something with the flavor of ActRaiser, with the essence of the original but also a personality of its own, I think you will like this game. It has its flaws, particularly in its visual presentation, and some of its new ideas could use a bit more hammering out. But it, like the game it is based on, is a rather unique game that pulls you in powerfully the more time you spend with it. There isn’t a whole lot like this out there, and it’s handily better than other homages like SolSeraph. And hey, that incredible music sure doesn’t hurt.
