this game will be a perfect 10. i will bet my entire videogame collection on it ! my most wanted game of 2006. this will hit the million mark sooner than you think. takes everything from all the smb games and combines with new enemies, moves, and levels ... come on, that will be a instant classic! now lets do the same thing for castlevania series!

A misconception that alot of folks seem to be making (myself included) is that this is a continuation of the Mario 2D platforming series. It isn't. It's more of a reimagining of the original Super Mario. Bros. game for the NES. Don't go in looking for a Racoon tail or a Hammer Bros. Suit. No warp whistles or Wario-appearances here! Once I adjusted to that slight disappointment, I was able to enjoy the game for what it is: kind of a "Super Mario. Bros: SPECIAL EDITION". And there is some replay value in attempting to collect all the coins and unlock all worlds/paths on the map. Fun game to be sure, but not the classic that alot of it's champions will proclaim. Simply more of a revisitation of past glories. Expand

With this release, Mario Kart gets bumped to second-best all-time DS cart and NSMB takes the top slot. With the DS Lite next month in North America and the Wii by Xmas, it's never been a better time to be a gamer. This cart is at the top of the DS heap - only thing missing is rumble support, as was found in the Princess Peach cart. Based on this, I can't wait for the Yoshi's Island DS release!

I love Mario and Mario 3 so I was excited to play a brand new mario platformer. The game is great but I do not think it is as deep or challenging as Mario 3. This game is just as great as the original and I love the fact that you can play multiplayer. I also really like all the new power-ups (especially the giant mushroom!). The only problem I have is that it comes up short. I beat the game in less than a month. I would just like it if they had 9 or 10 worlds instead of 8. That's all.

Not only is NSMB the longest 2D Mario game to date, with 80 full length levels as opposed to SMW's 72, or SMB3's 90 but inflated by 10-second levels like hand trips, Hammer Bros., etc., it also features the best level design, the funnest gameplay, the best graphics, and provides the most challenge when it comes to time attacks. And it's portable.

It's a great game. Good controls, minigames, and a fun experience. The only problems are many of the levels are rehashes of previous levels, no Wifi {which would've been great in 2 player}, and it's short. You can probably beat it in a few hours, while getting every stage and secret takes about 7-10 hours.

My personal favorite 2D Mario platformer, and the very first one I played. After 15 years without a classic 2D Mario game, New Super Mario Bros. marks the return of the king to the 2D platforming genre, with a new fresh look and the same excellent gameplay everbody came to love in the 8-bit and 16-bit era.

Mario controls as great as he did back in the day. NSMB features 8 different worlds, each with a distinct theme. Nowadays everyone is sick of seeing the same 8 world-themes in 2D Mario games, but this is the game that introduced them, and I think it was a good idea. As for the levels, most of them are really fun and well designed. Each levels holds 3 optional Star Coins, which are the main collectables in this game. Most of them are pretty easy to get though. The whole game is a bit on the easy side, actually. This might bother some of the old-school Mario fans, and it might be the game's biggest flaw. The amount and variety of levels is satisfactory to me. The game is bit short, but I think the overall quality and replay value make up for that

NSMB introuduced some really cool power-ups. The giant mushroom, the mini mushroom and the blue koopa shell are among my favorite Mario power-ups of all time. They're very fun to use. As for the bosses, all of them are OK, but once again, they are way too easy. The game has also a bunch of multiplayer modes, but I didn't play them very much, so I won't comment about them.

Visually, the game is colorful and has a good level of polish. It mixes 2D backgrounds with 3D models, and the result looks just fine. The melodies are as catchy and happy as ever. Overall, this is a very lighthearted and happy game, one that will put a smile on your face for the time you are playing.

Some people criticize this game for being too simplistic and not really innovate in any area, like Super Mario World did in 1990. But the truth is that NSMB is pure 2D Mario greatness, it's a return to the more traditional style of the NES Mario titles, which is just perfect as it is. So whether you are a fan of the series, or platformers in general, you need to give this game a try. I would even say it is the best of the new generation 2D Mario games, despite being the worst technology-wise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is very easy especially the Bowser grand fights which is not a good quality for my taste. But the graphics are lively, colorful and imaginative. Some of the graphics though looked raw and quite old but is still accepted because overall, the graphics design is still great.

The highlights of this game is the top-notched background music and the beautifully laid miniboard platform games (such as World1-1, World2-2, World3-5). Those platform games are the most enjoyable within the game. I like here the realism of some aspects of the game like the CANNON PLATFORM, which when you entered the platform, you will see what kind of world you will be "thrown" or "flown" by the cannon blaster in the game.

I finished this game more than 3 times if I can recall my childhood and early teenage years. This has left a satisfying impact to my wonderful childhood.

Again, this is a wonderful and a great remake to the classic Super Mario bros game. I am proud that the company has created this game.

However I would complain that the game is a bit too easy for most people. At the end when you defeat bowser, i’m Surprised that there’s no second stage, it makes the game a bit disappointing on that matter.

I think the artisic choice works, especially for this game being a handheld platformer. The level design could provide a bit more challenge, but in saying that there are some tough levels as the game goes on. The soundtrack is the best in the 'new' series and had an original feel before the other 'new' games came out - the bowsers castle/boss theme song is an underrated gem. It also had some fantastic, memorable minigames and multiplayer modes which really gave this game some more life and worth. So, even though this game isn't as good as past 2d Mario platformers such as Mario bros 3 and Mario world, it still holds up today and is a great purchase for the DS system Expand

If you own a DS and need a quick, accessible and fun adventure, this is the game for you. It's charming levels and worlds mix for a fun experience along with collectibles that enhance the satisfaction of completing the game fully. The extras that add on to this game is what adds to the fun and charm of this mildly long adventure.

This game is a absolutely classic, and envelops well the magic of both 2D Mario and the Nintendo DS alike. This should be in every Nintendo DS, and its a great fun in your pocket. Sadly its a bit repetitive, easy and the final levels are poorly designed, but overall its a solid game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My first Mario game ever. Not too easy neither too hard, it's pretty well balanced and has a spot on soundtrack; i even remixed the overworld theme, and it became one of my most successful covers. Level design is interesting and with tons of original mechanics and bosses (i particularly liked the World 7 Castle Boss, Lakithunder), and the final castle was so satisfying to finish, to the point i consider the victory fanfare one of the best ever made. Great the idea of adding touch screen background customization as well, since it keeps the post-game experience vivid and bright. The multiplayer side is really well projected as well, for both VS and minigame modes, taking back some minigames from Super Mario 64 DS, but adding some new exclusive ones as well.
Definitely a go-to for the Nintendo DS, recommended!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game somehow finds a way to be super original and nostalgic at the same time! Theres a perfect mix between nostalgic things and original things jn the game! You got the original you know, go to world 8 castle save the princess but this time around Bowser Jr is the main boss in my opinion because he’s in every mid castle and progressively gets harder throughout the game, AND he is at the final boss battle and gets bowser to help him. Not to mention, literally EVERY castle boss, (except world one being Bowser, and world 8 being bowser and Bowser Jr,) is new, like you got this desert wiggler guy called Mummy Poki for world 2, you got a large Cheep Cheep for world 3, you got a giant Goomba for world 4, you got Peety Piranha for world 5, you got a monty mole in a literal TANK for world 6, and a Lakitu with LIGHTNING for world 7! If thats not cool then I don’t know what is! Also, I like how you have to unlock world 4 by beating Mummy Poki with a mini mushroom, because its a cool new little addition and it challenges you to beat the boss while its 2x harder to unlock the other world, that may sound bad but there not forcing you to do it, you can beat the boss normally, go to world 3, and proceed to world 5 IF YOU WANT, you have options, another reason why I love this game so much, this game was a true throwback to the older games at the time while being the most innovative 2D Mario game to EVER be released, for example, adding moves that are iconic to the 2D Mario of today like wall jump, and ground pound. Originally no one thought those 3D moves from Mario 64 would make themselves into 2D games, but Nintendo found a way like they always do. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In short, New Super Mario Bros. is an excellent return to form for the 2D Mario series! First, gameplay, controls are very smooth, they are perfectly responsive and you probably won't be experiencing any trouble with controlling Mario, the story is pretty basic, but personally, I don't think it's much of an issue, because I don't expect my Super Mario Bros. games to have a final fantasy level story. Peach gets captured again, go rescue her, it works for this game, especially due to this game being not much more than a return to form, the level design is phenomenal, and you'll get a lot of fun out of the main campaign, I think the new power ups are great too! Sure, the mega mushroom isn't much more than a controllable cutscene, which makes it only fine, but everything else is amazing, the mini mushroom has great utility, being able to use enemies as platforms, running on water, and accessing smaller areas. Finally, the loops shell is a nice powerup as well, it can be a bit irritating in some cases, but just the idea of becoming a koopa troopa is fun to me. Now, if everything in the main campaign doesn't do it for you, even the side content is awesome! Now, the fact that some minigames are reused from 64 DS is a tad disappointing, however, there are some new games thrown in as well, which are all addicting and super fun time wasters. So, in all, New Super Mario Bros. is an excellent return to form for the 2D mario series as a whole, with a fun main campaign, great controls, fun new powerups and addicting side content! This is a title I strongly reccomend! Expand

For example the snake block levels felt slow but also unfair. I still have fun with the rest of the game but it felt very "OK" after the first few worlds. the music became repetitive because it is always bubbly which was fine in the first world but the other worlds songs have the same vibe. This makes the worlds feel less unique. Also the bosses get a little repetitive besides the castle ones which I enjoy but I don't like battling bowser jr. 20 times. on to a high note the levels are for the most part designed very well. This game was made to be played single player which allowed it to try things that you couldn't do in the Wii version. one thing I have mixed feelings about is the new powerups. the mini mushroom is fun to use but doesn't show up much and is only used for secrets. The blue shell I absolutely hate it has killed me more than helped and lastly the mega mushroom is cool the first time but a little underwhelming every other time I use it. Also the fire flower feels as good as ever in this game and added some quality of life changes such as fireballs being able to go up stairs which I like. I remember being so excited for the game and telling my neighbor about it and I forgot to say what the commercial was about but he said yeah when I asked him if he saw the AD and he was just as excited as me about the game. When I got the game, I ended up beating it in a month with my brother's help. I loved the graphics to the game. The controls felt very smooth too. It was a big twist when dry bones bowser was a boss. Speaking of bosses, I love how the bosses are all original unlike the other new super mario bros games. The music is varied too which is cool. The game may be a bit easy for my taste but it does have its challenge. Also the level design is cool like you got shooting pipes, new enemies that surprise you, and tiny areas. I think the biggest issue with the game was that you rarley use the new power ups but other than that the single player is good. Multiplayer is good too but I don't like the pipe stage because you can camp to avoid your big opponent by going up and down that one pipe. Expand

The core gameplay is great and brings in some moves from 3D Mario games like the ground pound and triple jump, which worked super well here! The levels are fun to play through, with the traditional grass, desert, water, forest, snow, rock, sky and volcano themes for each world. The overworlds could have been a bit better and not as linear as they are. The main bosses are all very creative and interesting, including Mummy Pokey, Lakithunder, Mega Goomba, Petey Piranha and a few more. There were some cool ideas for new powerups. We got the Mega Mushroom which lets you smash anything in your path and it’s super satisfying, the blue Koopa shell which is fun to slide around in, and the mini mushroom which makes you tiny and is only good for certain levels. The graphics are a bit too pixelated and outdated, but it’s still an upgrade from previous 2D Mario platformers. The soundtrack is pretty good but I wish there were more world specific themes because the default athletic theme gets repetitive as you progress. In Mario vs Luigi, you connect to someone else’s DS and battle it out to collect the most stars. This mode is kinda dated now but it was fun at the time the DS was still alive! The minigame mode returns from Super Mario 64 DS with mostly the same ones, but some new ones included. This is still the most unique out of the New Super Mario Bros games to this day. It’s a great game but of course, it sold so well that it caused the series to get stale afterwards. Expand

It lacks the wacky creativity of Super Mario Bros. 3, the sense of wonder and adventure in Super Mario World, the originality of Super Mario Bros. 2 (which is still a great game despite being not originally being a Mario game), and the groundbreaking innovation of the original Super Mario Bros. This game has some new ideas, but a lot of them are wasted by being severely underutilized. Take the Mega Mushroom, for example. It seems like the game was designed around this power-up for a few levels in the beginning, and then they just kinda forgot about it after that. The mini mushroom is good for some secrets but that's about it. The blue shell is admittedly pretty fun, and probably the best and most unique aspect of the game. But compared to the Tanooki suit or the cape, it feels quite unessential to the game experience. The level design is nothing too special most of the time, and nothing really sticks out in my memory. I did enjoy the two hidden worlds as a concept, but i found their levels to mostly be just ok. The mini-games are definitely a fun time-waster, and it is honestly probably the part of the game that has the most replay value. Overall, I found this game to be decent, but not up to snuff with the prior entries in line of 2D Mario games. Expand

Before New Super Mario Bros. entered my life, "Yoshi's Island" was, to me, the greatest platformer ever created. That title may now have to go to New Super Mario Bros.
  2. The kind of game that makes hardcore Nintendo fans get on their knees and weep in sheer joy over the eighty new levels of new 2D Mario action...The visuals come in scorching hot, with gorgeous 3D bringing the old school into a new school setting. Sprinkle in some minigames and multiplayer modes, and you have a system seller.
  3. While it lasts, it’s some of the best platforming to date and features what I consider to be the best Nintendo DS graphics to date. While it’s a shame the new power-ups are frills and the length of the main game is ridiculously short, it’s hard not to recommend it.
