Around the World in 80 Days is a 3-match puzzle game based in the Jules Verne universe of the story and is a port of a PC game. This was a pleasant surprise as I was expecting a late movie adaptation of the 2004 film which had a GBA title to release alongside and that was very lackluster.

ATW plays very similarly to something like Bejeweled, or more familiarly, 7 Wonders. There is some loose story told as you progress through levels bother through a journal your character writes, as well as some 3rd person dialogue cut scenes. I didn't care much to follow along with the story in the game as I already know it, but it serves its purpose well enough.

The gameplay was surprisingly excellent. Technically it functions as it should. Each level is 1 day in your journey meaning there are 80 levels to play through and from the extent that I've played they do progress in difficulty rather nicely. England does a nice job getting you used to the basic systems. Halfway through France, they throw in some more curveballs and the level layouts are tricky enough to make you really plan ahead. Being a 3-match puzzler it's inherently addictive as well if you are into those types of games.

The music serves as a nice ambiance. You can choose to leave it off and you won't miss much. However, it can set a bit of atmosphere and is a bit calming, which is nice.

I'd certainly recommend this game to 3-match puzzler fans. Does it do anything revolutionary? No, but it is still a competent, good title.

With over 80 levels to complete and an even tougher challenge unlocked upon completion of the story, this is actually one pretty memorable expedition.

Around the World in 80 Days is a great example of how to translate a PC original to a smaller format.
