As I mentioned in my review of the sequel to this title, this game has a very automated combat in certain parts (even more than in that game). However, this does not detract from the interactivity and fun that can be derived from this game mode. Despite not having so many options of what to do during combat, you can make just one mistake during a fight and end up losing it.
On the other hand, the story is interesting for the most part, but it is clear that the sequel far surpasses it in every aspect.
I like the fact that you are not forced to do mandatory side quests that interrupt the story unlike later games and speaking of side quests, most of them are not very interesting and feel a bit randoms and filler but it's still more content that extends the game life so I don't consider them as a negative point in the game.
Overall the game is pretty good but it has a couple of aspects that could be improved.

yo-kai watch is a great game for the 3ds. I played it as a kid and I remembered it was fun and when I replayed it, it was great with fun designs, a great battle system, and a great story. But sometimes it drags on a bit but i do not have a super big problem with that. And it has no multi player.

Which is why I’m giving this game a 9.4/10.

    The good:
    Easy to learn.
    Fun gameplay.
An amazing story from start to finish.
    Yo-Kai, all look amazing.

I lost the cartridge on my sofa and never found it again. I never got past McKraken's first phase because of that. Befriending yokai is also really hard, and grinding is extremely boring. 7/10, this game really needed some of the changes ykw2 brought, like seeing a yokai's favourite food or special coins.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This adventure has left a large impact on my life. At the time Pokemon 3DS games began to divide players due to unsatisfying game play, Level-5 released a fresh take to the monster-fight RPG genre. Yo-Kai Watch is definitely one of my favorite 3DS games of all time. From its colorful characters to its slice-of-life level design, this ghost-hunting extravaganza will most likely leave you smiling. While replaying this game years, I've noticed that not all the mechanics have aged well; and I still think the sequel is the best game in the series. But rather than aim for 100% completion, I think its more enjoyable to just beat the main story. That's where this game really shines, the story has a lot of heart to it. Unlike the anime, the main characters Nate and Whisper are really friendly; and the majority of the gameplay is helping out people and Yo-Kai. It a real "don't judge a book by its cover" type of experience, when the bland gag anime is related to a really enjoyable RPG. Even the action is loads better! You can build teams of up to 6 Yo-Kai to fight in 3 on 3 battles. It's a really engaging battle system thanks to personality of the sprite design. I would find it annoying that I can't completely control how my Yo-Kai attack, but its actually relieving that with good planning, players can just sit back and focus on strategy during the battle dance. When I'm not activating Soultimate Moves, I'm rapidly targeting enemies to barrage. I have a theory that this game is an evolution of Kaz Ayabe's "Attack of the Friday Monsters", combining heavy realism themes with a Saturday morning cartoon style story. And in terms of gameplay and overall structure, Yo-Kai Watch nails just about everything. But because Yo-Kai Watch 2 contains all of 1's content, I don't really have much reason to replay this game except to revisit the charm of the story and fight an army of Jibanyan clones in the Infinite Inferno. For what its worth, I think this game is worth it to play because it has a beautiful ending cutscene where the player puts hand to heart and thanks all the Yo-Kai for just being in around. It makes me cry every time. It's definitely the game with the most heart. Expand

THIS GAME IS AWESOME. Good graphics for the 3DS, very good music, good game-play and a good story. If you have a 3DS and want something new and very good try this game it is amazing. They say that this game is a Pokemon rip-off but this game is not that. I can confirm that this game can be sometimes better than Pokemon, but not always.

This is a good game, but be warned, play this one BEFORE the sequels, you don't need to, but once you play the second game, you can't go back to this one. It has a big open world, and lots of Yo-Kai, but the second improves on this one first in every way, so play this one first.

The story of the game really could be better, and an online mode for battles or Yo-Kai trades would make the game a bit longer, because after you beat the final boss you do not have much to do anymore. Another reason why I gave this game a 7 and not an 8 for example, is the factor, that the game is just to easy to beat. I really never have been challenged, not even in boss battles, which can be a bit annoying when you beat the game with absolutely no trouble, but the positive things are the mostly good designs of the Yo-Kai, the world and the soundtrack is fantastic Expand

Yokai Watch is a game I feel extremely conflicted about. On one hand the character designs, music, and world the game puts you in are superb and make the opening hours of the game a blast. Later on however, the game started to form cracks in it's design. My biggest complaint is that the Yokai don't really feel like my friends as the game says they are. Past the halfway mark in the gameYokai Watch is a game I feel extremely conflicted about. My biggest complaint is that the Yokai don't really feel like my friends as the game says they are. Past the halfway mark in the game the rate at which you can befriend decreases to an unreasonable amount, this is coupled with the fact that you basically get one chance to obtain a yokai before you half to find them again. For rarer, stronger yokai this becomes intolerable and I ended up depending never really switching up my party.

That said the world in the game is one of the few in all games, let alone on the 3DS that feels like a place that really exists and is presented beautifully. The music fits the game perfectly and breathes life into the rest of the game. Characters are enjoyable and accompany you throughout the game leading to the plot being entertaining.

These pros outweigh the cons in some ways but that doesn't eliminate them. For one the battle system while engaging and fun is very fast and you don't really have any control over what you yokai do besides switching them out and using their special moves. Quests give you a vague objective which leads to time spent wondering around and interacting with everything at your disposal. There is a massive difficulty spike at the end that made me simply give up on beating the game after a pretty short play though considering the genre of 15 or so hours.

Yokai watch is best compared to what it is based of, summer break. For the first while it's fun and liberating and for the last half it can feel as though it has given all it can offer.

This game, which belongs to the catch 'em all type, is the perfect way to reinvent pokemon. I liked the battle system based on the double screen, and the variety of the types and classes of the spirits. If you like pokemon and digimon games, I'm sure you will enjoy this game.

Where do I begin, playing through the game, I tried to keep an open mind as an avid Pokemon fan, that was difficult. I was not expected to be hit in the face by how awful this game is. The story is nonsensical, the yo kai are poorly designed and geez I have never been more disappointed in characters. The combat was strategy based but drawn out.

in my honest opinion, Yo-kai Watch takes the basis of what Pokemon is and flips it on its head. I hear so many people say that this game is a Pokemon rip off when it' s so much more than that. if you haven't played the game yet and have heard "it's just a Pokemon rip off", give Yo-kai Watch a look through for yourself and see how of a game it really is

I really enjoyed the game but the RNG ruins it, Just spent an hour trying to befriend a yo kai with no luck at all.

    Cons

Yo-kai Watch is a wonderfully crafted game. It's battle system is unique, the Yo-kai are great (Besides Mama Aura), the writing is laugh out loud funny. The only true problems are how difficult it to befriend Yo-kai, as well as the story being a little messy. Truly a great game! Also it;s definitely not a Pokemon clone. It only took about twenty minutes of gameplay to realize that.

It is still zippy and enjoyable enough -with touchscreen mini-games for purifying and Soultimates- but strikes an awkward middle-ground where combat isn’t involved enough for more experienced players, but is chaotic enough with its machinations to befuddle newcomers.
