This game is addicting and engaging. You have about 50 different Nintendo characters, (that are decently balanced) to choose from. Each character is (for the most part) unique with it's attacks, and although you only have 12 different attacks to choose from, this makes the game a little more simple which can make so much more exciting. This game is great, get it.

Bought this game because all my friends begged me too, and I couldn't find three things wrong with it. The only things I have a hard time with is fearing that I'm going to break my analog playing and smash run. Smash run isn't that bad, but randomly choosing a mode for me is a little too much in my book. I did experience lag a tiny bit, but I wouldn't say it's a major problem for me.Bought this game because all my friends begged me too, and I couldn't find three things wrong with it.

really the only reason its not a ten is because of all unbalanced characters. for example: Wii fit trainer has no actual powerful attack that you can land, and even dealing basic damage is hard because the header has too narrow a hit range. and then there's Link, who has massive launch and reach with his sword, the power bow alternate also has massive launch power and range, and finallyreally the only reason its not a ten is because of all unbalanced characters. for example: Wii fit trainer has no actual powerful attack that you can land, and even dealing basic damage is hard because the header has too narrow a hit range. and then there's Link, who has massive launch and reach with his sword, the power bow alternate also has massive launch power and range, and finally the meteor bomb alternate insta KOs anyone off the edge. on the PLUS side the character variety is (usually) able to find a way to suit just about any player. the smash run provides a good way to battle it out against about a thousand weak enemies and a boss level enemy or two just to mix it up a little. its too bad that you can't modify the difficulty like classic, but it still kind of balances out somehow in the end. its true some maps like Jungle Japes are just impractical for a good fight, but they're in general pretty good. the all star mode should have some more rewards for the difficulty it presents. but wait there's more! and more! and more trophies than ever before! I'm around 560 with all the fighters and a small handful of alternates. STILL MORE. of course the trophies are useful sometimes. they basically give away all the strengths and weaknesses of the fighters and enemies. Expand

Not as good as the Wii U version but still a great game. The graphics are okay. The character selection is awesome. The Smash Run mode is fun but Smash Tour is better. The gameplay is great. Super Smash Bros for 3DS is good but if you had to choose one, I would say Wii U. If both, it's worth buying.

I definitely wasn't expecting the quality experience I would've got from the Wii U version, but I'll be the first to admit that Smash 3DS did pass my slightly low expectations.

Smash on the go is a genius idea. I mean, who wouldn't want to play as their favorite Nintendo characters brawling each other in familiar locations like Prism Tower, Spirit Train, and Rainbow Road on the 3DS?
I definitely wasn't expecting the quality experience I would've got from the Wii U version, but I'll be the first to admit that Smash 3DS did pass my slightly low expectations.

Smash on the go is a genius idea. I mean, who wouldn't want to play as their favorite Nintendo characters brawling each other in familiar locations like Prism Tower, Spirit Train, and Rainbow Road on the 3DS? Exactly. Its simple concept is extremely fun and I'm delighted to say that I encountered no errors or lag whatsoever (at least not on the online; more on that later).

The character roster in the game is fantastic but I already talked about that on my Wii U review, so you can go check that out if you need to. The stages here are based mainly on handheld games like Pokemon X and Y, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, and even PictoChat. Some stages from Brawl and Melee return but it's really the great new stages that are the standouts here, particularly Mute City and Magicant.

The game's main feature to differentiate it from the Wii U version is Smash Run in which your characters run around a giant map, defeating as much enemies as they can to grab stat boosts before competing in one random final battle. You could be trying to climb (which plays to jump stat boosts strengths) or just fighting. It's a very fun mode and it's a great way to test out your favorite players before you take them into the main Smash mode, which is just as awesome as ever.

The collectibles in the game are mostly completely different from that of the Wii U version, making it basically essential to get both games. Trophies and music are based on handheld games (speaking of the music: it's amazing) but it won't really ruin the experience if you don't have a Wii U.

By far, the most disappointing aspect of the game for me, personally, was the online capabilities. The setup for online is great. For Fun and For Glory was genius but I encountered A LOT of lag while playing online. I had so much lag that I am not sure I will be going back to Smash 3DS' online for some time. If you're looking for an online experience, definitely go with the Wii U version.

Overall, Smash 3DS surpassed my expectations with the only particularly disappointing thing being the online. The collectibles, music, pure Smash gameplay, and the new Smash Run mode all made me satisfied and you should always be satisfied with a Smash game.

It's fun and has new things but the key bindings aren't great with little customization. The singleplayer feels solid but the multiplayer is horrid which is why i bought the game in the first place is to fight other people. We are talking about lag that makes it feel like you are running the game in 8 FPS even on the new 3DS just released in 2015.

The gameplay is great and enjoyable but little has been added to provide a lasting appeal - in fact some features of previous SSB's have been removed.

Great modes such as Adventure Mode and Target Mode have been removed. There is a new mode called 'Smash Run' but honestly, it is not all that exciting. The inclusion of online is a brilliant idea, however, there are some major issues with lag in 90% of matches. Furthermore, the studio has confirmed that it has no plans to release DLC later on, which is a disappointment considering the absence of some interesting characters.

    Overall:

    Gameplay - 10/10
    Graphics - 10/10
    Sound - 10/10
    Lasting Appeal - 5/10

This game could have been a 10/10 game if only they had added more features and challenges (or even the prospect of challenges in future DLC). Unfortunately, the game is left feeling bare bones and only provides trophies to keep players coming back for more.

Sure, some fighters like Diddy Kong and Sheik might be competitive and overpowered in some aspects, but honestly, every fighting game has some of those.
Not to mention over 30 well designed stages with a separate Omega form, and over 50 amazing music tracks consisting of arrangements and original pieces from different Nintendo franchises.

I will be honest; I've never actually owned a Smash Bros game, let alone even trying to understand the game. Not until I've poured over 20 hours into the game have I decided to express my feelings about the popular Nintendo brawler. In short, it is simply amazing.

Super Smash Bros, for those that aren't familiar with the series, is basically a brawler between many of your beloved characters from well-known Nintendo games, such as the Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros, and even Pokemon. There are other game-modes as well, such as Smash Run, where you fight enemies and collect power-ups and upgrades for a final battle with three other opponents, and Classic Mode, where you follow a path and fight different opponents to earn beneficial rewards.

The previous Smash Bros games were all on the N64, Wii, and Wii U. With the new addition to the franchise coming to the 3DS, you can now take the beating fun of punching Yoshi out of Mute City everywhere you go. The game runs and looks very nicely on a portable console; in fact, I think it's probably one of the best looking 3DS games out there. The only downside is the online mode whereas the framerate does drop significantly when playing with other players.

Along with the new Smash Bros games, you are allowed to create your own fighter using your Miis, which is actually much bigger than it seems. You are given three different combat styles for your custom fighter: Swordfighter, Brawler, and Gunner. The Swordfighter uses a sword and has move-sets similar to sword-wielding characters, such as Link or Marth. The Brawler relies on brute force using his or her fists and, again, has move-sets similar to unarmed characters, such as Little Mac and Captain Falcon. Lastly, the Gunner has a gun equipped and has move-sets similar to Varia Suit Samus (I added Varia Suit because there are two different Samus characters). Of course, there are many different skills you can equip your custom fighters with by participating in events that earn you rewards, such as Classic Mode and Smash Run.

In conclusion, Super Smash Bros for 3DS is an excellent competitive brawler for the Nintendo 3DS. Although it seems repetitive at times, there is special content you can unlock as well as challenges to complete. All in all, it's great fun, whether you're at home or on the go.

I found the controls here quite easy to pick up, something to get used to, but easy to pick up. It's amazing that a game like smash is playable at all on the 3DS, it demands so much to the point where the 3DS (well regular ones anyway, not probably not "New 3DS") has to reset every time you close it. The single player gameplay is nice, fast paced, and smooth. The absence of Adventure mode is disappointing though. Some new characters are interesting to work with, like the Wii Fit Trainer or Duck Hunt Dog, and even Pac-Man. Although multiplayer capabilities could have been better, many matches are lag ridden and it's quite difficult to get into a mostly lag free match, I encountered that in my early days of For Glory, even in 1v1s. These days when running around as Dr. Mario or Bowser I don't encounter as much lag as before. The graphics look nice for something running on the 3DS and surprisingly no framerate drops when entering 3D mode, it's strange considering the newer Pokemon games don't really demand as much and still have issues. Guess it's because some models on those games are more detailed. But on Smash you have 4 different characters of varying sizes moving around quickly on screen at one time it's shocking how framerate doesn't dip into low numbers sometimes. Smash 3DS is nice if you don't have a Wii U, and really good for those who like to play fighting games on the go Expand

    Cons

-the only fun thing to do online is for glory mode and it lacks a match up systum so that you play with people near you instead of trying to play someone in china where it lags and also lack a skill ranking systum another frustrating thing is there is not separate records for friends its only online and CPU fights and friends combined thats annoying

-almost everything is already unlocked for you when i bought the game there was only a few stages and maybe a dozen characters to easily unlock i didn't even use a guide and i got everything but the thophys in around 5 hours it would have been epic if you only started with maybe 3 or 5 of the stages and characters and went on a epic unlock a-thon

-no story mode and a bunch okay to boring modes that are only good for completing the challenges also it would have been epic if the characters were hard to unlock and you got characters from the hardest challenge instead of a trohphy

this is just my opinion its still a blast to play with friends and is going to be super fun to master

Nintendo have hit the ball out of the park and into the faces of Microsoft and Sony with Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. Smash Run is what makes this game unique and amazing. Looking at the Smash Tour reminds me too much of Mario Party, I did hope they had a more polished version of the Smash Run on the WiiU version with more big maps. But this is the 3DS version so lets get back on track. It's rather you hate it, or you love it. Favorite character is Zero Suit Samus, Little Mac and Shulk have too much spotlight.

An enjoyable smash bros title but a its definitely a step down from brawl or the wii u game that game after. You have one great massive roster and tons of options for customization which I ended up using more then I thought I would. the problem is that smash 3ds has a lot of weak stages and lacks many of the modes that could get me to play brawl for hours.

With one of Smash's largest rosters, this game features a very diverse set of fighters and contains all the modes one would generally expect in Smash. Although I'm very happy to have Smash on the go, there are several things I'm not so much a fan of.

Playing on the original 3DS screen, the action is rather small. The major problem this provides is that when things get spread out, it can be hard to determine exactly what actions are taking place, and it can make it hard to calculate your next move. Also, Smash Run is not too interesting at all. A mad dash for power ups that sometimes makes my character's movements feel unnatural (especially jump) does not justify the trip through nostalgia (especially when there is so much geared to Kid Icarus, which I don't have particularly care for). StreetSmash is nothing to write home about, and the mini games are never really worth it in my estimation. As always, the greatest fun comes in playing Smash, but the small selection of stages is quite noticeable. I could do without the mini games if that meant more stages. Online play works well enough. With a handheld system, lag is inevitable. Several of the new characters also feel overpowered compared to the old (but a patch is supposedly going to fix this).

It's understandable that you can't cram as much into a handheld though. This is a great entry for the first portable Smash, and I hope the trend continues. The same solid fighting action is here, with several improvements to the mechanics over Brawl. Whether you want a copy or not depends on how much you want Smash on the go.

It combines the best elements of both Melee and Brawl, such as the speed being slower than Melee, but faster than Brawl, resulting in the perfect speed for this game. Tripping was removed (thank god) unless you slip on a banana peel, but that's okay, and you can still disable that item.

Speaking of items, all the new items introduced are great, except for one. The gust bellows is the cheapest Smash item ever. It acts like Mario's FLUDD move, except with a much longer charge. This allows you to pretty much destroy everyone on screen with pretty much no skill involved. Good thing there's always item switch.

The controls are surprisingly great, you get used to them very quickly.

There are TONS of both new and old stages, and I'm glad they still kept some stages from Melee. The characters are very balanced as well as being very unique. The new Classic mode is great, All-Star is pretty much the same, Smash Run is a good replacement for Adventure, there are tons of fun "Challenges" (aka achievements) and the Stadium events are fun. However, this game does have it's problems. Firstly, online. The single and local multiplayer runs very smoothly, except for a bit of lag during 4-player smashes. However, the online is when not stretching a 2 minute match into a 5 minute lagfest, a lucky guess on when your moves might connect with an opponent 2 seconds after you pressed the button. For a game like Smash, that's pretty unforgivable. I mean, Mario Kart 7 online was fine, why is this so bad? Second, the lack of single-player modes, or modes in general. Sure, you can Smash with AI opponents, but it isn't the same. There's Classic and All-Star, but even those can be played with another person. However, the modes it DOES have are very deep, and I can live without online play (though I do hope they patch that). You can create custom characters, which is cool, and I don't really know what Smash Conquest is (an online mode) so I can't comment on that. Overall, I highly recommend this game, and I'm gonna be sure to get the Wii U version when that comes out.

    Onto the good stuff!
The wide array of characters, fun stages, and the single player modes are excellent, not much to say.

Summary: Terrible character balance ruins what might have otherwise been a fun game. Lag in 4v4 matches is out of Nintendo's hands, as I'm sure there are people trying to play on public wifi ruining the connection, so I'll give that one a pass. I don't intend to play the game any more unless the balancing is addressed.

The graphics are the best I've seen on the 3DS, and my word does this game sound good. I seriously use this instead of my MP3 player now.
The gameplay is the most balanced ever, with some characters being toned down a bit (looks at metaknight). I've played for over 40 hours and only lost one match because of circle pad problems.
All the unlockable characters are great, and most have a unique gimmick like little mac's KO meter, or Rosalina and Luma's ability to separate, and actually make it work, unlike Ice climbers, who were broken as hell in Brawl.
Smash run is SOOOOOOO addictive, and I would have bought the game just for this. There have been 1 or 2 online problems, but most are because of my bad internet, so I don't find myself frustrated.

For one thing, it was made by Nintendo, a developer that I have not really looked to for games in a long time. I have mostly been on Steam as of late, and I don't really play Nintendo games anymore. Also, I was nervous because this is the first Super Smash Bros. to be released on the 3DS. The franchise has always been a console game, and I thought bringing it to a handheld might hurt the franchise. So, does this game do a handheld Smash Bros. better than I had hoped, or does it make me never want to see another handheld Super Smash Bros.? Let's find out. This game plays very much like all of the other games in the Super Smash Bros. series. It is a fighting game about hitting your opponents to make their percentage go up. The higher the percentage, the better chance you have of knocking them off the screen. To win you have to either get enough K.O.s to rack up the most points before time runs out, or K.O. everyone until you are the last man standing, depending on which mode you play. This game does not change the formula very much from the previous Smash Bros. games, but it does add a lot of new things to keep it interesting. For one thing, there are tons of new characters and stages. One thing this series is well known for is combining several video game characters from different video games (mostly Nintendo), into one game. Series mainstays such as Mario and Link are still here, and their moves are basically unchanged from the previous games. However, a lot of other characters that have been in the previous games have changed. For example, Bowser is now much faster than he was in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. There are also tons of new characters, including Little Mac, Lucina, and Rosalina and Luma. This game also adds a few characters from non-Nintendo franchises such as Mega Man and Pac-Man. Each of these characters has their own move set, and work with the same button combinations. This makes Super Smash Bros. a much less complicated fighting game than most other games in the genre, and very easy to just pick up and play. However, this is just the core gameplay of Super Smash Bros. The 3DS version also has several more really fun modes of play. Some have returned from previous iterations of the series, while others are brand new. In terms of overall gameplay, I really don't have much to complain about. This game is insanely fun to play, and very enjoyable. It is especially fun in multiplayer. It is probably the most fun you will have with a video game this year. As for the graphics, while they are fantastic, I'm afraid I can't say they are the best on the 3DS. I still prefer the look of Super Mario 3D Land over this game. However, that's not to say the graphics are bad. In fact, the graphics of this game are actually quite good. They are definitely some of the best on the 3DS. Everything in this game is rich with detail and is beautiful to the eye. In fact, it almost gets to the point that I was wondering if I was looking at a handheld or a console. I was surprised by this, as I thought for sure the graphics would suffer greatly on the 3DS. The graphics of this game are fantastic, but they are not the best the 3DS has to offer. This game also has great presentation. This game has many fun modes of play, and is super-addictive. It also adds the new feature of character customization, allowing you to create your own character. However, one thing that I was somewhat disappointed by was that although it retains all of the modes that make Super Smash Bros. fun, it also lacks several modes found in the previous Super Smash Bros. that I enjoyed. Coin battles are now gone from the game completely. While no one really played coin battles, it was an interesting battle mode, and I wish it could be brought back. There is also no adventure mode, which has been replaced by the new Smash Run mode. There is also a lot less content in this Smash Bros. For example, Super Smash Bros. Brawl had many more pieces of music. While this is a little disappointing, it does not detract from the overall experience. Overall, this game is fantastic. It really got me back into the 3DS, and it actually makes me want a Wii U (this game is also coming out for the Wii U). This is a game that anyone who has a 3DS should play. If you do not have this game on your 3DS, you need to do yourself a favor, and buy it now!

The best fighter on the 3DS and quite possibly the best fighter available on any current handheld. Despite some flaws that are all but inevitable on the 3DS, this game perfectly recreates the Smash experience for handheld. A must play for Nintendo fans.

However added features that may not be interesting to some are optional. The game plays smoothly at 60 frames per second on the characters but assist trophies run at 30 fps. However it is only visible on the Nintendogs assist trophy. The game is incredible but with some draw backs. First off is the online. You get banned for disconnecting from an online game even if the person is being cheap. You end up having to wait an amount of time before playing again which is an idiotic idea. The servers are poor enough already and I experienced lag from even one on one For Glory mode which affects the gameplay greatly. But even with bad lag I still played and won a few matches. Some of the characters in game are very cheap and you will find out why. Of course you can be just as evil by simply playing as those characters. The game has too much to offer but not everything will interest everyone. Is the game bad? Not at all. I would recommend this game and you should at least download the demo before buying it to give it a try. The game is fun but with a few drawbacks. I hope the servers improve in the future for a better experience. Expand

All in all, an good effort for Nintendo, despite some flaws that I will comment on.
First, the game modes. I´ ll rate it an 9/10, cause of lack of game modes.
Second, On line. I rate this an 7/10, because about the insane lag sometimes, and in others it is lag-free. Third, the controls. 8/10, cause of some weird controls setups, like two buttons for jumping and taunts for the d-pad!

True, of course, it doesn't have nearly as many features as the WiiU version has been revealed to have, but this makes perfect sense seeing as it is still a handheld version. Anything wrong or troublesome about almost all of the veteran characters has been fixed and balanced, and most of the newcomers have proven quite fun to play as too. Dr. Mario and Dark Pit, however, have absolutely no reason to be in this game whatsoever and I honestly wish they would leave and never come back. Lucina could've simply replaced Marth, and, again, Dr. Mario and Dark Pit easily could've been alternate skins for Mario and Pit because that is quite literally all they are. Oh, except for the fact that Dark Pit's Final Smash is worse than Pit's. All that aside, though, Smash 4 has proven to be quite a superb game indeed, guaranteed to provide many an hour of fun. True, however, the online gameplay is quite atrocious indeed, but it does make sense seeing as it's a fast-paced game trying to communicate over the internet in between two handheld consoles. That being said, however, pretty much means the online could've been cut out. Well, worldwide online at least. I've played with friends online that live within the same city and it worked perfectly fine, but whilst playing with a friend in the UK, it was lagging like nuts. In my personal opinion, the only fighter that was dropped for this game that I actually cared about was the Ice Climbers. That's just me though. Smash Run, the new mode being introduced in this game and being exclusive to the platform, proved to be quite fun as well. Honestly, I was just kinda listing things about the game with no transitions or structure. Man, do I suck at writing reviews. Expand

I kid you not when I say that the soundtrack is the best I've heard in any game ever. It's that good.
The game also looks great, runnjng at a mostly solid 60fps, and making decent use of 3D. But what really makes this game stand out is the fun- the raw joy from this game, the raw joy only Nintendo can deliver. The swollen roster is epic, and whilst I admit I miss Wolf new additions like Mega Man, Shulk, Pac-man, Robin and Villager all deliver a varied yet balenced experience. Customisations also work well, although the decision to restrict altered characters to local and solo play is understandable. Speaking of, the multiplayer modes work well- for the most part. Local is flawless, but online can be a bit shakey when playing with four players. With two or even three players, however, I rarely had any issues.
Despite this, however, there's no doubt you're getting a well-stocked cartridge here. Sakurai's tendancy for stuffing his games with content resurfaces, with a brilliant classic mode, as well as All-Star mode, A new addition called Smash Run takes the spotlight, however- seeing Mega Man deck a Goomba is really something. The only fault is the online- this fantastic mode deserves the best.
To conclude, Smash Bros. 3DS' only flaws are with online. Everything else is spot on, and is perfect for revving up your hype for the Wii U version.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS is a welcome addition to the series which is sure to satiate fans' thirst until the definitive Wii U version is released.

This game was one of my more highly anticipated games of the year, along with it's Wii U counterpart. I unlocked all the characters within a few days, a feat not too impressive when you are given around 3/4 of the characters from the get-go.

My only gripe with the game are that 4-player matches can be hectic, since the players look so small on the 3DS screen. This makes battles that are not 1v1 almost unplayable on larger maps. The Smash Run mode was also a bit underwhelming, but not necessarily worthy of subtracting points.

Whether or not you have friends to play with, this title is a solid entry into the Super Smash Bros. Series. However, I think it may become somewhat obsolete by the time the Wii U version releases. Only time will tell though.

Having waited 6 whole years I feverishly downloaded this title from the eShop after enjoying the Demo for a week or two. After playing 50~ hours and being a veteran of the series from the N64 days, I felt it was high-time I reviewed this game. If I could summarize in advance for those who don't want to read a lengthy review, it would be this:

Super Smash Bros. has taken a step forward only to take a drastic step back. While it's an improvement from previous title, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it also removed a lot of features both fundamental and superficial to the point it negates the improvements' efforts. Slap an overly sterile and rather surgical presentation over it and you have this title. Sm4sh as it has been dubbed.

Now I'd like to articulate as to what it is I'm getting at. Right off the bat it's important to understand that the Smash. bros community is split between two types of enthusiast: The casual player and the tournament player. Something Nintendo alludes to with their 'For fun' and 'For glory' mode(s). This contrast of player-base has been with the series right from the start.

However, a defining tension has been drawn since the days of Brawl when the changing and removing of integral mechanics occurred.
To save the reader with a separate issue entirely, I'll put it bluntly. Casual players are happy no matter the title. Tournament players are more responsive to change. Sm4sh has made further removal of key features enjoyed by this demographic, disenfranchising this part of the audience which Nintendo aimed to appease with the inclusion of 'For glory'.

The inclusion of infinite air-dodges, the removal of wave-dashing and edge-guarding, and of course, the higher/further kill-zones and floatier launch making for a lengthy match that makes opponents harder to kill. These are all fundamental changes that have been made that has contributed to the taking of a step back. As said above, casual players by their nature are impartial to either removal or inclusion, and therefore there is no benefit, only an alienation of one half of the audience. As I touched upon before, the fundamental mechanics did not only take a blow. The content has too. One might argue that as it is a 3DS title, it is inherently limited. And you would be right. But this only adds to the reasoning that the series has taken a step back and not forward.

This title is unique in the sense that it's the first Smash. game to be a multi-platform title. Normally this implies minor difference in any other game, but in this case it is severe. It is a console game (Wii U) that is optimized to deliver a similar experience with the handheld (3DS). The margin of difference is massive, and it's seen in what I'm talking about. The removal of content. From the gross lack of cut-scenes, to the rather simplicity of stages, all the way to the changes of characters (Diddy Kong's banana limit, Olimar's Pikimin limit) and ultimately, the removal of characters entirely. (Ice Climbers). All of the mentioned were removed/changed to suit the multi-platforming approach.

Most importantly, the netcode leaves a lot to be desired. Whether or not Nintendo will refine their connection quality in the future via patching remains to be seen. But in closing, I'd like to drive home the point that Sm4sh is prettier and boasts a larger roster than it's contemporary titles - yes - but it commits to the sin of clone-characters more than it's previous iterations. As far as fundamental and content changing goes, it's a step back.

The stand-alone game is good, but as a Smash. title it certainly does not live up to the legacy. to quote my previous summary, it is lack-luster, surgical, and sterile. Giving the illusion that it's a breath of fresh-air and 'new' only to the consumer's dismay that it has removed more than what it's added. And although the Wii U version will offer the Smash veteran more, the fact will always haunt us that whatever it is we get on the console COULD have been better if it had not been multi-platform.

    I give it a 6/10. It's a good game, but a poor Smash game.

A great entry of Smash Bros which surprised me in how well it could be built for a handheld. The game is chalk full of single player content, the fps is smooth in single-player, and the controls allow for tight play. The netcode has some serious issues in online play, which hopefully is fixable. As it stands most people can expect extreme lag in trying to play with others through the network.

Brawl got a lot of things right with the content aspect, but didn't always deliver on gameplay (tripping, not using momentum while jumping). While Smash 4 isn't a perfect game either, it seems to have covered up many of Brawl's flaws and brought back fantastic gameplay.

Everyone's biggest gripe with this game seems to be the net code. It is unfortunately pretty much just as awful as it was in Brawl. I personally prefer playing For Glory mode 1v1, which (if you have good internet connection) will 90% of the time have decent-to-perfect gameplay with little slowdowns. On the other side of the spectrum, very rarely will you ever get a "perfect" game. The odds of one person having bad connection is much higher with more people, and this will almost always result in a slowed down, tedious game.

The new game modes are pretty hit and miss. I enjoy Smash Run as a testing arena for new character builds and simultaneously as a way to get new equips for my favorite characters. It can be a bit tedious that you can get the same custom move over and over again, but I suppose that is just to pad in more playtime to collect them all. Trophy Run (Trophy smash? I don't recall) feels a bit tedious as well and you will not be spending any large amount of time with it, but after I rack up a lot of coins playing regular smash games I like to go waste them all on loads of new trophies (G&W works wonders in this mode). Home run derby returns and is as fun as it has always been (try to beat my 3101 m); and the other new Bomb mode is nothing to be excited about. Alright if you like to break and re-break high scores though.

I love the new roster. All of the non-clone newcomers are very intuitive and fun to play and while not everybody accepts the clones a little bit of roster padding is good for little to no extra development effort. Some of the cuts seem very unnecessary (RIP Lucas ;_;) but with limited development time some cuts were expected. For "competitive" players, the roster is still really unbalanced, only slightly better from Brawl's, but as the game has only been released for a short time there are bound to be changes in the meta still. If you do not play competitively this shouldn't be too much of an obstacle, even if you plan on playing For Glory mostly tiers really don't come into play until you play in tournaments.

This game really looks fantastic. The character models are smooth, the stages all fit their respective games well, and it runs at 60 fps (except AT's, pokemon, and pikmin). If you didn't believe it could happen, it truly is that classic smash gameplay on a handheld console. It plays just as good on 3DS as it would with a GC controller. Just make sure you don't do those smash attacks too hard, the circle pad can be a bit fragile. I've never had problems, but just a warning.

All in all, Smash 4 is miles above Brawl and has enough content to sink hundreds of hours into, just as previous entries in the series.

Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3ds is definitely a long awaited title! Welcome to the long awaited review of Super Smash Bros 4 or Super Smash Bros for 3ds. Super Smash Bros 3ds took a long time to cook, but it was definitely worth the wait. If you've read up on recent game releases you can see that the Nintendo 3DS has not had a long list of exemplary titles. Despite being a great, durable system with outstanding first party priority support from Nintendo, the third party contribution from non-Nintendo companies is lacking. This is mostly because Nintendo enforces strict guidelines on who can produce on their system, leaving a lot of lesser, less reputable companies in the dust. So considering that, its not hard to see why many of us did not need advertisement to buy Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3ds. In a way, the game couldn't lose because everyone knows its the game to get. True smash brothers would have bought the game no matter what, because we are so confident we would not be disappointed with Smash Bros.

That being said, Super Smash Bros. for the 3ds does not, in fact, dissapoint. There is a new Smash Run mode and a new spin on the classic solo experience. Also included is a challenge mode, a street pass “Street Smash” mode, Wii U connectivity, online or local, singleplayer and multiplayer. On top of all of that, the game oozes with extras such as stat tracking, items, replays, trophies, sounds even snapshots you can share with your 3ds friends! Because of these new features, taking and sharing replays or snapshots have never been this easy for competitive and casual gamers alike. Being able to share your unique experiences with others opens its own world, hopefully encouraging a wave of new player Smash Bros.!

The core mechanics are great, smashing your friends has never been this much fun. The vast array of characters make this a title that will capture a lot of gamers hearts. There's literally something for everyone - old or young - due to its diverse cast of characters. Included is the addition of Mega Man, Pac Man and even the Duck Hunt Dog! The programmers have chosen to super refine the game to create a product that was all about the smashing. The fighter base is also, at least in these beginning phases, thought to be very well balanced and well adjusted. Couple it with all of the different possibilities new equipment can provide, and you truly have the best fighting experience of them all.

The game allows players to use their Miis and customize them extensively, as well. You may select from three different styles, each totally unique from the other, making your Mii an original creation. The level of detail involved in the Mii customization is actually quite surprising. I was not expecting to be so impressed, but it is actually quite fun to create yourself or your friends, or Miis you just made up to play against your other characters! On top of that, there is still the whole world of equipment to explore, as well including cosmetic gear and things that alter your abilities. This is, personally, one of the most entertaining parts of the games for me. Why not let out some aggression on grandma? The only unfortunate thing is there is no Stage Creator as seen in previous games; however, the decision to focus on the cast of characters, was the correct one.

Earning achievements earn players rewards as well as a name on the leadership boards - encouraging completion and expanding the play time of the game significantly. Something about getting ALL achievements is so satisfying; game developers have definitely figured that out. Games like Super Smash Bros. have been stringing the proverbial carrot for a long time. I'm glad Nintendo has done such a great job integrating the game and going through great lengths to make it appealing for the classic Nintendo customer. Characters possess more complex move-sets than ever before, and the rewards you get only serve to further improve the selection and levels of customization.

The amount of content in this game is truly stunning. At first, it can be a bit disappointing knowing there is so much you have yet to earn, but its well worth the wait. The game offers plenty to enjoy straight out of the box! There are at least four costumes to every character, with certain characters having totally unique skins altogether - for the first time ever. Such as Olimar/Alph or choosing dark link or divine link. Most of the experience actually comes from playing the game, as there's not much plot to speak of. I definitely recommend Super Smash Bros. For 3ds to anyone with a 3ds. It's a title that is sure to give a lot of joy for a long time and is definitely set to be a heavy hitter.

With an increased roster of about 48 characters, everyone can find a character that's perfect for him or her, many of the older characters return such as Link, Mario, Zelda, and other classic favourites. The newcomers such as Villager from the Animal Crossing series, and Mega Man from the Mega Man series, and even Pacman make an appearance. Each character has a moveset that really feels like what they would do if they were forced to fight. Many of these new characters have their down special to be a counter move which I don't enjoy so much personally, but it's still very helpful to have.
Being on a mobile console there are lots of things to consider, "Should I wait for the Wii U version?", "Does it really work for my console?" etc. Personally I own a 3DS XL and I feel like the larger version of the 3DS makes the game feel more natural unlike the 3DS or 2DS which at times can be straining on the eyes due to the smaller screen and for some, make one's hands uncomfortable.
Overall this is an amazing game with a character roster no one should be complaining about and everyone who likes fighting games, or just likes playing with friends should pick this one up, it's an amazing on the go experience although at times it feels like my console will break due to the intense use of the circle pad and shoulder buttons. Easy to learn, harder to master. Pick it up and enjoy.

On its own merits, it's an utter joy...but it's also pretty clearly a primer for the Wii U version. [Issue#255, p.68]

The new Smash overcomes its biggest challenge by actually being very playable on the portable 3DS. The online side is mediocre at best, but there is nevertheless a lot of fun to be had here. [Nov 2014]
