It features every feature from sun and moon, and added a bunch of new things we didn't even know we needed. The ultra necrozma is the 2nd best boss in all of pokemon, with the 2nd best pokemon theme of all time. The ultra wormholes made hunting for the legendaries even more fun than in ORAS, but the remixed themes of the legendaries didn't hit nearly as hard.
Doesn't even matter though, as the dopamine burst of catching my 5th shiny pokemon in the wormholes made up for that.
    The plot is slightly improved.
8/10 - we really did not need a s&m sequel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While not the objective best Pokémon game, obviously, Pokémon Ultra Sun is my favourite game in the series by a long shot, and by far my most played as well. A massive list of Pokémon to discover, a story that takes you to other worlds, and plenty of changes both big and small.

If you hopped into Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon expecting the game to just be the same as Sun and Moon with tiny increases in difficulty like I did, you’ll be hit with constant surprises. Several important battles have been added, removed, moved, or altered. Many totem Pokémon have been swapped out for a completely different Pokémon, which can catch you off guard if you prepared for the battle in the original Sun and Moon. And of course, the big legendary battle against Ultra Necrozma. It’s easy if you know it’s coming, but in a blind playthrough, you have no idea what to expect and are very likely to lose, possibly multiple times.

Ide give it the same score as the original one, however, this game is just a pure ripoff. Nothing has changed from the original. You get one new legendary Pokémon... That's it. Yet another example of Nintendo's greed.

Being a pokemon game, it's automatically decent. The problem is that there is an unjustified difficulty spike at the beginning of the game at the trainer school. Also, the game is generally far too easy, with the trainer school teacher battle being the only difficult battle of the entire game.

Pokémon Ultra Sun was released in 2017 as the upper version of the Gen VII main title Pokémon Sun. In a classic Pokémon manner, Pokémon Moon and Ultra Moon were release in pairs with Sun and Ultra Sun respectively. In a classic Pokémon manner, Pokémon Moon and Ultra Moon were release in pairs with Sun and Ultra Sun respectively. But in many ways the classic Pokémon ways were abandoned with this game, but more about that later. Pokémon Ultra Sun is not a sequel to Sun ( as it was with B/W and B2/W2 ), but it is rather an upgraded upper version as it used to be in Gen I to IV. The changes are not generally pretty subtle and do not warrant a separate release, in my opinion. Now lets get to the actual review. When it comes to Pokémon games, I am very conservative. Actually, I am pretty conservative generally speaking, but even more so when it comes to gaming. I have gotten used to the only very slightly changing gameplay of the main series Pokémon games over the years and I love them for it. They are the only console games I emulate on my PC. And I do not want them to change. But this time around, they have changed. And not for the better. First of all, I do not think, that I have ever played a Pokémon game that would be so easy as this one. In all possible ways, you are getting help all the time. All the time the game holds your hand. The EXP share system is ridiculous and wrong, you overlevel everyone else almost immediately. There is always healing and items everywhere. You get so much money right during the first hour of gameplay that you cannot possibly spend it. Roughly 5 to 10 times more than in previous Pokémon games. Ultra balls at lvl 10. Every two minutes there is someone there to help you, to heal you, to show you the way. And I could go on. It very quickly became a painful experience for me, gone was the sense of adventure and exploration I have always gotten from a Pokémon game before. Now I know that these games are theoretically made for children, so maybe the difficulty should not be brutal, but Pokémon games were always meant for children and the difficulty went down very noticeably here. Other than that I do not really like the settings, I was expecting myself to like the Hawaii, but it just does not feel right for Pokémon for some reason. The characters are obnoxious, the new Pokémon are ugly as always and the game does not even try to force you to use them, as the original 150 form a majority of all the wild Pokémon. No Microtransactions, marginal SJW. I played on PC using the Citra emulator.

I have not felt this bad about a Pokémon game for a very long time. Actually never before. I have barely gotten through the game. I hope next Gen will be much better. Final Verdict: 46%

Very good game. Definitely worth playing. Great story, the new pokèmon look great, the music is amazing, and the characters are some of the best in the series. There are two major flaws: very long tutorial, and your character is always smiling, even when something horrible happens, and it looks very stupid .

This game is simply amazing, the vast world that is available on the 3DS looks unreal on a console that delivers such short experience apart from remakes and various remasters, this is by far the most complete game, but it’s not perfect and needs a lot of tinkering that needs to be done for future re-masters or remakes on future Nintendo consoles if Game Freak considers it.

The lack of gyms is a strange but workable trade off because the trials act as a gym challenge all together. Some of the totem Pokemon can be tough with the wrong team, but can be be with practice and strategy. Locations across the world are mostly good and some bad. There unique towns and geographical sites that look great, but then you have your standard grass routes and small beaches on nearly every island. The new Pokemon are definitely interesting. Some have bad names and lackluster design, but others are creative and can be viable in multiple battles. Some of the better designed Pokemon include: Decidueye, Incineroar, Lycanroc (all forms are great), Salazzle, Golisopod, Silvally, Bewear, and Mimikyu. The characters are not bad at all, Lillie is introduced as the damsel in distress but grows with the player nicely. Hau is okay, could use some more edge but is decent to battle. Gladion is okay, wish we could battle him more. Team Skull's goal is pretty lackluster but at least they are fun to battle. Guzma fits as that team's leader because of his style. Lusamine was a bit better in Sun and Moon but her role in Ultra Sun's story is good. I think the biggest character disappointment was the fact that we didn't get to battle Professor Kukui the moment we become champion like in Sun and Moon. Nothing against him as a character, but Game freak did botch one of the coolest moments in all of Pokemon. The story is good too. The Ultra Beasts still remain a strange edition to Pokemon, but at least the story allows them to fit into the world rather than just placing them in around the islands for the trainer to randomly come across. Necrozma is especially a great addition and a powerful boss to fight when it turns into Ultra Necrozma. The legendary guardians are weird looking too, but the story allows them to fit into the game and gives them a role, which is important for making a good legendary. The post game of Ultra Sun is one of the strongest in the entire franchise. While definitely overkill of fan service, Rainbow Rocket adds that extra story after the elite four that a lot of other Pokemon games lack or cannot quite pull off (*cough Sword and Shield). Though i do not know why the bosses all have legendary Pokemon on their teams. It would make sense for Giovanni to own Mewtwo, but most of the bosses never caught a legendary in their stories, and it can make a tough battle even tougher if you go in unprepared. It's a weird fit, but at least the challenge is there. Overall, Ultra Sun is the most surprising Pokemon game I have ever played. While there are some errors and gripes, this game is definitely in the upper half of good Pokemon games and deserves at least one play through by fans who want to gain the full experience of Pokemon's main series games. Ultra Sun is definitely not my favorite Pokemon game of all time but I was pleasantly surprised during my playthrough. I had a ton of fun with it. Alola is an interesting, diverse, and fun region, though it isn’t the most fleshed-out region in the series. The gameplay lefts some things to be desired, with not enough innovation (for me) and the actual changes being either minor or too different from the “formula” to be worth sticking with. Ultra Sun makes up for these semi-shortcomings with some fantastic new Pokemon and Pokemon forms, a lot of fun and interesting characters, and a superb postgame. The storyline is easy to follow and fun to play through. Ultra Sun is an ambitious and exciting entry in the series. I would personally place it in my top five games (though it is probably fifth). If I could use one word to describe it, Ultra Sun is just straight up FUN. I don’t know if I conveyed it enough in the above review, but I love Pokemon as a series and have fun pretty easily no matter the game. Ultra Sun did very little to take me out of that fun atmosphere, and tried a lot of new things to make me feel the fun even more.

It improves on some of the problems Sun and Moon had by introducing a larger post-game, a new battle facility in Festival Plaza, and even some minigames which I found fairly enjoyable.
There are still some negatives, however. The story is basically the same, if not worse when you factor in Lusamine's now confusing motivations. It gets a little monotonous to play through, with the slog of the first few hours, intrusive cutscenes and hand-holding, and the fact that it's pretty much a retread of Sun and Moon. The new Ultra Space areas you can visit are, for the most part, just glorified hallways (although the visuals are still EXTREMELY impressive, otherwise).
If you skipped the 3DS games and are wondering whether to get S/M or US/UM, just go for US/UM. It's the definitive version of the Gen 7 games.

The story of this game is very engaging, and the characters fulfill the definitive personalities we've come to expect from Pokemon characters. This is the most original of all Pokemon games to date, but it didn't let go of most core qualities that fans love about Pokemon.

The difficulty definitely spikes in this game, but its nothing a casual player can't manage. It's simply speed bumps that require more training of your Pokemon, which in turn cause you to explore more of the region and find all of the secrets hidden within.

For the first time in Pokemon history, you truly feel as if the journey is yours, and not the character's on the screen. Between taking pictures with you Pokemon, petting them, exploring the region with them, and fulfilling your quest with them, its a true Pokemon journey you won't forget.

One of the most hand-holdy Pokemon entries to date. This isn't done in a helpful way but the game is aggressively easy. All the NPC characters are push overs. No one in the game wants to win. You beat people and they are like awesome job here's a bunch of free items to make your easy game baby proof. They aren't just pushovers in terms of their teams, but their characters inherently want you to win. Not a believable or motivational character to be rivaling. The Rotum-Dex is one of the worst additions to the franchise. Literally giving you information "you didn't ask for," hopefully you didn't need your map while doing it cause you can't get it while he tells you the same thing every 4.5 minutes in the game. The Ultra version does have a better Post-Game with grabbing legendaries through the ultrawormhole jumping, though the mini-game gets old and time-consuming after 3 goes , and there really isn't any other post-game apart from the battle tree. The story has great potential but ultimately got child-proofed as well. Being rid of HMs was a giant QOL improvement, but you have to dress up and a ridiculous outfit to ride those Pokemon. Graphically This has the best looking pokemon you'll see though you'll need a New 3DS if you want to see them without lag, cause the old systems can't handle the game well. Shiny hunting is pretty good in this game. The SOS battles are a cool mechanic and great to work with to get IVs as well. I wish the game had a camera that was more static or at least spent more time on the pokemon. Zooming in on my characters never-changing facial expression during battle is weird and useless. I liked the Pokemon designs. Alolan forms is a great idea that got deflated by only giving them to Kanto Pokemon. I also wish they didn't remove the national dex in game. You can still catch all the Pokemon but they don't have numbers or appear in your dex. It feels like they're not really part of your adventure, just also there non-canonically.

Combining all of this with the fact that a small handful of new, non-mythical Pokémon have been added mid-generation for the first time in the series, and that the Pokédex has been expanded to natively include over 400 Pokémon catchable in the games without trading, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon have managed to make the region of Alola feel even more alive that it did before – and that’s quite the achievement.

In some ways, it feels like these games have come too soon; Pokémon Sun and Moon are still so fresh in our minds and we can’t help but feel that the Ultra versions would have felt more special – and therefore easier to justify purchasing – if a little more time has passed. You’d be forgiven for not wanting to jump back into the same world again so soon but, in their own right, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are truly incredible entries to the series that deserve to be sitting amongst the elite Pokémon titles. If you’re ready for another trip around Alola’s beautiful islands, this is the way to do it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pokémon Sun/Moon was one of the best experiences I had in the Pokemon world! The region is great, vibrant colors everywhere, Alolan form Pokemon, customization of your character and despite not having the best story all around, it was still enjoyable. Still, when Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon was announced I was expecting something along the lines of Black/White 2, a sequel to the previous games. Instead, and the trailers of the game show that they advertised a "different" Alola region. Was to be expected the same timeline but eventually, "mid-game" as the director of the game said, "the timeline will change". Unfortunately, in a game with 4 islands, the changes start in the last one and until then the story continues pretty much the same as in previous games, except for the addition of a new team and some new pokemon. The issues of Sun/Moon were fixed but this still felt more like a DLC and not a full game. It was the first time ever I felt buyers remorse with a Pokemon game and I regret a lot paying full price for it. Still, if you never played Sun/Moon you should go for this one. Expand

The Tutorial basically never ends, the game is bogged down with cutscenes that I couldn't give a **** about, and it's probably the easiest pokemon game yet. The series just gets worse and worse each generation. There's no focus on gameplay, with almost all the focus on dressing up your character and waifu-pandering.

Recommend the game to anyone who wants a good pokemon game honestly, even if you already played Sun, because every route has at the very least one new thing added in to discover and explore, usually more than one, even things like the first two times you meet team skull were fully changed and replaced. Absolutely terrible, but can be fun for people who are new to Gen 7 Pokemon as there are many new really solid features. However, to get to those features you have to slog though a boring 30+ hour linear story where the first 10 hours are just tutorials. This was tolerable in the base SM as the hype was real back then and the story was interesting then. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the greatest pair of games in pokemon since inception, bar none other. As a fan of the series as a whole, it hurts me to make such comparisions as all games have had strong points until now but I say it being a fan since Red and Blue came out so long ago. They are the most polished games and all core mechanics feel like they are at their best.

What surprised me the most playing it was not the changes and additions to enrich the games of Sun and Moon (who mind you were also very good and if the Ultras didn't existed they'd be maybe the best game in the series instead), but how it feels like it succeeded in all it tried, just like with Sun and Moon, it didn't just changed things, but it MATTERED and it WORKED.

The games are the hardest a pokemon game has been, mostly by giving actual strategy and thought to the enemies and bosses. Totems specially. The level design is great and looks beautiful, as with the predecessor there's no grid, making the routes feel like real, natural places, and making you put more thought in how to find its hidden secrets. Catching all pokemon, training them, battling, breeding, all seems tweaked to make them more pleasant to do. the QoL changes were massive and the region is better, including an extra trial to do.

There's new things to do that can expand immensely your play-time even if you don't care about on-line trades and battles, from small add-ups like letting you play and interact with wild pokemon or having more z-crystals to find and collect, to bigger time-sinkers, like how you can:

-literally surf on top of a pokemon to compete for the highest score in multiple tracks

-find hidden secrets everywhere with new NPCs that weren't there before, some have small stories relating to a pokemon or a secret event

-travel the multiverse on top of a beast and find legendaries, shinies or Ultra beasts depending on how well you play and again fight for the best score. There's also new Ultra Beasts and their lore was revamped a lot.

-face an entire new saga in the postgame, who was also expanded a lot too by the way

-fight the new Battle tree mode that lets you go all out with no restrictions
And that's the top of my head only.

Everything that I praised in Sun and Moon is either back or better, plus more, making this feel like a worthy replay instead of how previous games like Crystal or Yellow would feel as the same with no changes. I'd say the changes here by far surpassed previous examples the series itself gave, even though those games are some I really enjoy too.

I go as far as to say the Alola part of this long series is not just composed of amazing games, they also feel like a love letter to the fans, from the real challenge it brings as the hardest games, to improving and callibrating the content from its predecessors, to the whole mentioned above post-game plotline, that brings a decent challenge mixed with a nostalgia trip that brings so many characters back from all gens. You can even restart the game multiple times and it will feel as if its the first since there's so many options to pokemon in your team, helps that without hms I can do monotype runs and other gimmicks by myself too, which would before be gimped by restrictions that aren't put on you anymore.

The Best game for hardcore and longtime pokemon players: tons to explore so it never gets bored and harder than previous ones. Overall it's actually a fantastic game.

The reason I'm giving it a lower score is because there really is not a lot of additional content there to justify the price tag, and given that they have had over a year to work on this, it feels a bit lazy. The RR endgame content in particular was a massive missed opportunity that could have doubled the lifespan of the game, but instead they just condensed it all into a brief series of battles in a small dungeon.

Having said that, if you have not played Sun or Moon, definitely get this version. This is the definitive Pokémon experience for me. The innovative adaptation of HMs alone make the game much more of a pleasure to play.

Best gameplay in pokemon, They are VERY good Games with the right seasoning of a good story as a complement. I reeplayed it and finished it many times already, without being bored, which didn't happened with a pokemon game in years. Also great dialogues, better written than previous games, and lots of new sidequests.

Imagine you bought Pokemon Sun and then they released DLC later like they did with Breath of the Wild. Then imagine that it wasn't DLC, and it was titled as an entirely NEW Pokemon game for full price. This is Pokemon Ultra Sun.

I try to find the good in some games. But most of the good I could find in Pokemon Sun as well, again, making it feel like DLC when I find the good things that are exclusive.
To be fair, and address this, my score would be lower, but there were some people who didn't buy Pokemon Sun. So, that's why my score isn't lower.
But, at $40, Pokemon Ultra Sun feels like overpriced DLC with another cartridge and a few extra features. It is ridiculous.

I truly liked those games, I liked every pokemon game till now, playing since gen 1, but this was truly a top, and best 3rd one. Sun and moon were cool, but ultra upped it by the thousands, giving me thousands of good memories of gen 7 already

Pokemon Ultra Sun kinda fills out what the original version should have been, from the plethora of legendaries to capture, to the well rounded side quests/activities, this game delivers in a way that the original version really couldn't. In addition, this version is a bit more challenging which is a welcomed addition seeing as most of these games tend to be a breeze when it comes to difficulty. The wormhole travel is also fun and the ability to catch a lot more Pokémon from different regions in this version is also a great addition.

It's not all perfect in the Alola region, as a Pokémon player for nearly 22 years now, these modern games are really starting to push it with the amount of chatter and robotic actions from the npcs you encounter or travel with. What I mean by this, is that there is simply too many moments throughout the journey where you are stopped in your tracks to have a lengthy conversation about topics that are repeated and regurgitated over and over and it is becoming tiresome and it completely breaks the pace of the story.

Please for the love of Ultra Beasts, Gamefreak please cut this down or implement a skip button, I sometimes find myself just forgetting about the plot entirely because I'm just spamming A + B so I can get back to exploring and battling, which is what makes these games fun.

+ Fun gameplay (battles & explorations)
    + Excellent visuals
    + Great soundtrack
+ Refined arena (Pokémon Stadium) mechanics
    + Loads of side quests/activities
    + Great legendaries and lore
+ The surfing mini game is fun with a classic reward
+ Poke Pelago & Refresh are fun

    - Too much dialogue that is un-skippable, narrative was never this series' strongpoint
    - Wormhole travel controls are awkward
    - Some useless side activities imo
    - Uninteresting npcs and side characters

I also have to mention that I am not sure I like the sequels direction they are taking, feel like the additions made in the sequels should be included in the original version for a single release, rotating with a refresh of the older games in between.

Overall this is a solid effort that should have been part of the original release, but they did get it right regardless, and the Alola region proves to be another solid entry in the franchise that will be fun for fans of the series to explore. This game is an 85/8.5 for me.

Better trials with better quests and totems. Starting is faster, the tutorial stage is much quicker than before. Postgame is without doubt the better one in the series.

Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon is still fantastic, especially since the original was a major shake-up to the decades-old Pokémon formula. The update may be overly samey to someone who has already played Sun & Moon, but it does improve upon the base game in several ways. The new version is a must for newcomers to either this current generation or to Pokémon in general.

Pokémons improved in a visual and gameplay way. Devs could let go the monster management, but otherwise the changes are definitely for the better. If you have a weak spot for Pokémons, this is your game. [Issue#282]

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the definitive versions of Generation VII. Fans that already made the trip to the Alola region might find that it takes a while to get to the juiciest new additions to the game, but diehard Pokémon fans and those that held off on Sun and Moon will find a lot to enjoy. The games are truly robust experiences, and the new additions help flesh out a game that was already quite strong. I could detail more about the story changes and enhancements, Mantine surfing or Team Rainbow Rocket, but not much else needs to be said. This is a terrific Pokémon experience that has only gotten better.
