Pokémon Ultra Moon adds a significant amount of new content to the original Moon, with a richer Pokémon selection, new areas that expand on the original lore, a surprisingly fun and polished new surfing minigame, new challenges and overall a decisively higher difficulty making for a much more engaging experience. Massive changes were made to the narrative as well, ultimately making it notably worse. As much as the new characters and plotpoints introduced have potential they're sorely underdeveloped and introduced quite haphazardly, and the greater scope of the new storyline often awkwardly clashes with the more intimate story told in the original game as some important scenes of character development have been entirely removed, leaving the whole narrative feeling somewhat disconnected. Nevertheless, a new grandiose story episode was added after the main campaign, which creatively builds on the new concepts introduced to craft a surprising narrative with nostalgic returns that perhaps doesn't take itself seriously enough, but still functions as an extremely fun postgame content and a nice celebration of past narratives. Decisvely better than the original, Ultramoon still greatly suffers from its terribly bland level design and the series' somewhat repetitive gameplay.

One of the best generations, but improved to the limit, it has a story, with larger plots and sidequests, a spectacular and an excellent competitive scene, full of many possibilities. And without a doubt the best post-game to date.

I went through the whole game and I have to say it is bad. The game is riddled with forced dialogue with people who you don't want to talk to. Now I do have to say that the battle mechanic is good, but what is the point of a good battle system if you cannot play the game?

They're good games with big problems. But! Pokemon ultra moon/ultra sun are in my opinion the best games in the series. They take everything that was great about pokemon and does it again while adding a bunch of great new stuff that really freshen up the expirence. mantine surfing is super fun while not bieng super in depth so its not disappointing that it probaly won't return but it's still fun. Z moves are a little dumb and mega evolution are just better. The story is epic and interesting as well as the characters bieng interesting and likable unlike sword and shield. The smaller pokedex actually gives you motivation to complete it instead of a pokedex of 800 taunting you. While the smaller pokedex is something people hate about sword and shield I see it as nothing but a good thing as I've explained before. Trials instead of gyms this is a tricky one while I like the uniqueness of trials I think I like gyms just a little more but I think the unique challenges of trials is something gyms could benefit from. This game has so much content if you're a kid you could easily spend 200 or even 300 hours for a older folk you can probally get 100-200 hours

An enhanced and better version of Sun & Moon. It's so similar to the first set of games that it makes them redundant. Considering the content, it's just like a remake with slight changes, some new additions. It's basically fixing a pretty mid Pokemon release and making it a little more interesting.

It really didn't change a lot, it's really no different from the previous games and just made the battles more harder, so it's not worth buying If you already played the sun and moon games since you're basically playing the same thing again, but this game is fine if you didn't though.

Even if in retrospect I realize that it's "borrowing" from Sonic Adventure's story, I still like it. I liked the Pokemon and the Postgame stuff, like the Neo Team Rocket stuff. That was really cool! I think a lot of fans overhate this game, but it's actually pretty good if they give a fair, open chance. My only notable gripe, and it's a big one, is that THEY CUT OUT THE NATIONAL POKEDEX HERE! I don't know everyone blubbered on about it for Sword and Shield when Gen. 7 already did it, and I still haven't forgiven them for when I finally finished my pokedex, talked to the developer, and he just gave me a robe and a shiny charm instead of the national dex, which I had been waiting for this whole time. Rants aside, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon are really good games that expanded upon the originals and may have some flaws, but are still really good and definitely credit the Pokemon series far more than hurt it. Pretty nice ideas, rideable Pokémon, cool setting, very good soundtrack. This game is pretty accessible for new players, and the game has a lot of quality of life improvements.
The story is ok, not much in terms of depth, but the change in the usual gyms were quite welcoming, the Trials are well thought out.

if we compare to other Pokemon games, is not as good at others, game freak is taken a dangerous direction, is bored in most parts of the game, and the only chance from moon, is a post-game mini-game to catch Pokemons, a bad version of Pokemon Cristal battle tower, and a unnecesary change to moon history.

It was fun to catch all the Pokémon and go to the Ultra Dimension. All those little side quests and stories, which are almost totally missing in Pokemon Sh/Sw. I don't know why Gamefreak decided to go a step backwards on the Switch (probably huge feature crunch), but now the newest Generation looks even worst to me. Consistent framerate, consistent gameplay, DEFINITELY way too much one-shot-killfest. Seriously, these guys are AMPED. You really, REALLY dont need to get legendaries to be OP in this.
In fact, the legendaries are actually pretty disappointing. Some Regi-'s, some iconic ones like Lugia, some Mew goodness... but all of them are kinda 7/10 just a few steps above normal bada$$es.

One thing I hate: mega ultra super boring evolutions. This game doesnt require you to ever use them, because Z power works very well, like limit breaks. But with that type-matching element to it.

Characters are so-so, but not absolute garbage like Lysandre (Pokemon Y)
Lys: Unfotunately, there are those who show their strength by taking what is not theirs. THEY ARE FILTH.
    *A short time later*
Lys: That's why I decided the only way to save the world was to take it all for myself!
Pokemon Y was the WORST game in the series. 2 steps forward, 10 steps back.

Skip and play ultra moon. Just know that you'll never enjoy any of the previous games the same way, ever again. Too many QOL improvements, too much fun. :)

The story of this game is very engaging, and the characters fulfill the definitive personalities we've come to expect from Pokemon characters. This is the most original of all Pokemon games to date, but it didn't let go of most core qualities that fans love about Pokemon.

The difficulty definitely spikes in this game, but its nothing a casual player can't manage. It's simply speed bumps that require more training of your Pokemon, which in turn cause you to explore more of the region and find all of the secrets hidden within.

For the first time in Pokemon history, you truly feel as if the journey is yours, and not the character's on the screen. Between taking pictures with you Pokemon, petting them, exploring the region with them, and fulfilling your quest with them, its a true Pokemon journey you won't forget.

Combining all of this with the fact that a small handful of new, non-mythical Pokémon have been added mid-generation for the first time in the series, and that the Pokédex has been expanded to natively include over 400 Pokémon catchable in the games without trading, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon have managed to make the region of Alola feel even more alive that it did before – and that’s quite the achievement.

In some ways, it feels like these games have come too soon; Pokémon Sun and Moon are still so fresh in our minds and we can’t help but feel that the Ultra versions would have felt more special – and therefore easier to justify purchasing – if a little more time has passed. You’d be forgiven for not wanting to jump back into the same world again so soon but, in their own right, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are truly incredible entries to the series that deserve to be sitting amongst the elite Pokémon titles. If you’re ready for another trip around Alola’s beautiful islands, this is the way to do it.

More in depth features that were barely touched on in the first few generations, such as EV training, natures and IVs are now far more included with things like the 'judge' function that lets you see your pokemons hidden values. There seems to be a feature for everything that comes together extremely well. I have no idea how I managed to rack up 300 hours on pokemon sapphire when the ingame content is so pitiful in comparison to what we have now.

I would however like a more simple way of battling other players, much like an online version of the battle tree, with some kind of record or score system. This would give meaning to these more in depth features that as of now rely on players arranging their own competition through message boards. Also the story was WAY too dialouge heavy, the breif but charming narratives of the orignal three reigons is far more appealing from me as a returning player.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pokémon Sun/Moon was one of the best experiences I had in the Pokemon world! The region is great, vibrant colors everywhere, Alolan form Pokemon, customization of your character and despite not having the best story all around, it was still enjoyable. Still, when Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon was announced I was expecting something along the lines of Black/White 2, a sequel to the previous games. Instead, and the trailers of the game show that they advertised a "different" Alola region. Was to be expected the same timeline but eventually, "mid-game" as the director of the game said, "the timeline will change". Unfortunately, in a game with 4 islands, the changes start in the last one and until then the story continues pretty much the same as in previous games, except for the addition of a new team and some new pokemon. The issues of Sun/Moon were fixed but this still felt more like a DLC and not a full game. It was the first time ever I felt buyers remorse with a Pokemon game and I regret a lot paying full price for it. Still, if you never played Sun/Moon you should go for this one. Expand

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the greatest pair of games in pokemon since inception, bar none other. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the greatest pair of games in pokemon since inception, bar none other. As a fan of the series as a whole, it hurts me to make such comparisions as all games have had strong points until now but I say it being a fan since Red and Blue came out so long ago. They are the most polished games and all core mechanics feel like they are at their best.

What surprised me the most playing it was not the changes and additions to enrich the games of Sun and Moon (who mind you were also very good and if the Ultras didn't existed they'd be maybe the best game in the series instead), but how it feels like it succeeded in all it tried, just like with Sun and Moon, it didn't just changed things, but it MATTERED and it WORKED.

The games are the hardest a pokemon game has been, mostly by giving actual strategy and thought to the enemies and bosses. Totems specially. The level design is great and looks beautiful, as with the predecessor there's no grid, making the routes feel like real, natural places, and making you put more thought in how to find its hidden secrets. Catching all pokemon, training them, battling, breeding, all seems tweaked to make them more pleasant to do. the QoL changes were massive and the region is better, including an extra trial to do.

There's new things to do that can expand immensely your play-time even if you don't care about on-line trades and battles, from small add-ups like letting you play and interact with wild pokemon or having more z-crystals to find and collect, to bigger time-sinkers, like how you can:

-literally surf on top of a pokemon to compete for the highest score in multiple tracks

-find hidden secrets everywhere with new NPCs that weren't there before, some have small stories relating to a pokemon or a secret event

-travel the multiverse on top of a beast and find legendaries, shinies or Ultra beasts depending on how well you play and again fight for the best score. There's also new Ultra Beasts and their lore was revamped a lot.

-face an entire new saga in the postgame, who was also expanded a lot too by the way

-fight the new Battle tree mode that lets you go all out with no restrictions
And that's the top of my head only.

Everything that I praised in Sun and Moon is either back or better, plus more, making this feel like a worthy replay instead of how previous games like Crystal or Yellow would feel as the same with no changes. I'd say the changes here by far surpassed previous examples the series itself gave, even though those games are some I really enjoy too.

I go as far as to say the Alola part of this long series is not just composed of amazing games, they also feel like a love letter to the fans, from the real challenge it brings as the hardest games, to improving and callibrating the content from its predecessors, to the whole mentioned above post-game plotline, that brings a decent challenge mixed with a nostalgia trip that brings so many characters back from all gens. You can even restart the game multiple times and it will feel as if its the first since there's so many options to pokemon in your team, helps that without hms I can do monotype runs and other gimmicks by myself too, which would before be gimped by restrictions that aren't put on you anymore.

The beginning is tedious and too long, I like to refer to it as an hour+ long tutorial. Throughout the playtrough I'm constantly forced into long dialogue sections inbetween new areas/towns, it's annoying. You still can't skip cut scenes and there's way too much dialogue, most of it is the same as the last game so it's really really boring to sit through. So the major con of this game is all the dialogue and cutscenes. As for the difficulty, it's an improvement over the original games. I had a bad team with no fire type and it made things harder for me personally, i turned off the exp share and turned it back on once i had 6 pokemon in my team and i've been the same level as enemy trainers. The legendary battle is the hardest part of the game, surprisingly.

I liked the new selection of pokemon though, i was really happy to have a mareep/ampharos in my team again, its one of my favorite pokemon ever. I felt like there was a lack of fire types though, besides marowak and salazzle. Also, the catchrate for necrozma is 255. Which means it has the same catchrate as route 1 pokemon, lol.

The complete opposite of Platinum for example, which disappointed me back in the day by being an exact clone of Pearl with fixed pokedex. That's not the case here, even playing Ultra games just after the previous ones still works (again unlike pearl to platinum). After finishing the robust main and post game stories, I keep coming back to do trades, battle tree, battle spot, hunts of shiny coloured pokemon and more. Can't recommend it enough to people who still play their 3ds/2ds

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fullified everything it set out to do:

*adding new additional content you wouldn't ever dream of/predict by seing Moon (surf on the back of a Mantine, Team Rocket, ultra-beast worlds)

*fixing Moon few shortcomings (victory road now has trainers, Mina has an actual trial, blush mountain has now an evolution area, move tutors are back at full)

*and keeping what worked and was good from Moon (like having trials and totems instead of gyms)

Having beaten the Elite 4 long ago, I still find myself going back to these games as there's lots to do and it's just enjoyable to play. In my point of view, they are the strongest games and generation.

Undoubtedly the best Pokémon game in years! Alola has one of the most iconic plots of all time!

The game to pick both for the best single-play but also if you want to do official online battles, tournaments, interactive games, or trade with people around the world, as it's where the active pokemon players all are now. They also brought in a new interactive facility in the pokemon agency, something I truly missed from the days of friend safari.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expected the same game, instead its changes sufficed to feel new and different despite being a retelling. The new post-game makes it even more so, and the Giovanni plot-line was a surprising twist as I didn't spoiled myself nor watched any promotional material, his presence, him having a Mewtwo and in a Master-Ball of all things, the Rockets being back, the other team bad-guys, the puzzles.. only missed Jessie James but I believe they are non-canon.. that whole Rainbow Rocket thing sure was a highlight. I am very pleased. I thought this would turn out worse. It has many new features, most of which please me very much. It surpasses the originals. In my original review, I gave it a worse score. However, this expanded version is all worth it.

The Sun & Moon edition games were already awesome pokemon games in all fronts, so the Ultra editions already had a headstart in its quality, world and battles. Only thing needed was to bring enough changes from the previous ones, which they did in all fronts, and even in unexpected areas, there's even all-new pokemon.

I found many pros in this game including the new side-roles you take to aid npcs, the new OST, the characters, the archipelago in which you play with the pc box pokemon and most of all: Team Skull.

Go-to game for newcomers, old players and people who were away from the series, also very fresh, just like the previous games, gyms were replaced so I can finally have a journey about something else in such rich world as the pokemon one. Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon is still fantastic, especially since the original was a major shake-up to the decades-old Pokémon formula. The update may be overly samey to someone who has already played Sun & Moon, but it does improve upon the base game in several ways. The new version is a must for newcomers to either this current generation or to Pokémon in general.

Pokémons improved in a visual and gameplay way. Devs could let go the monster management, but otherwise the changes are definitely for the better. If you have a weak spot for Pokémons, this is your game. [Issue#282]

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the definitive versions of Generation VII. Fans that already made the trip to the Alola region might find that it takes a while to get to the juiciest new additions to the game, but diehard Pokémon fans and those that held off on Sun and Moon will find a lot to enjoy. The games are truly robust experiences, and the new additions help flesh out a game that was already quite strong. I could detail more about the story changes and enhancements, Mantine surfing or Team Rainbow Rocket, but not much else needs to be said. This is a terrific Pokémon experience that has only gotten better.
