If you are like me a veteran player who played all games since gen 1, you'll 100% LOVE this one. It takes everything that work on Moon, adds great post-game, a new take on the Battle Factory concept in the form of the Battle Agency, new miniquests through all the islands and one of the coolest shiny hunting methods I had experienced yet.

Before starting the game, I feared I'd face problems with the pokemon distribution since it's divided into two versions but then I 1- remembered that all solo third versions also had exclusives locked-out, as any player who truly played them can tell you (Mareep in Crystal, Glameow in Platinum etc), and 2- when I got to play the game, was faced with one of the best distributions of pokemon in the series, I'd rank the distribution alongside Black 2 and Y in how much it gives you space to mount your own teams. Add in move tutors and this may be the best game to start off if you ever plan to try out the competitive scene. You can build all kinds of teams. (as a last tidbit, it also one of the best musics in the series, won't spoil, you'll know when you get to listen to it)

Huge expansion of the previous entry: tons of minor overworld additions, a new beginning, ending and new, big post-game content. New characters, new z-moves, move-tutors and new quests that bring incentive to exploration.

For old players: tons of new things to do, new pokemon and activities, new areas and enough to hold me off until next gen

For returning players: New pokemon, more different story and quest than previous gens

For new players: easy to understand mechanics, tutorials, menus, type-system and what to do

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the game that Sun and moon could (and should) have been. Somehow even better graphics for the 3DS, a more alive world with many more quests to do, an even better story(sun and moon's was great but this is way better), more new pokemon, more Z-moves, more returning pokemon and an actual post game for once. This is my 3rd trip through this same region and there is enough different to justify buying. Even a lot of the useless padding was cut out of the game, including some of the overly long tutorial. Finally, so much attention to detail was put in that I went in without watching many spoilers when I usually spoil the games. I was caught off guard by the different totem pokemon as well. I'd say that you should play this game blind if you want to play it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expected the same game, instead its changes sufficed to feel new and different despite being a retelling. The new post-game makes it even more so, and the Giovanni plot-line was a surprising twist as I didn't spoiled myself nor watched any promotional material, his presence, him having a Mewtwo and in a Master-Ball of all things, the Rockets being back, the other team bad-guys, the puzzles.. only missed Jessie James but I believe they are non-canon.. that whole Rainbow Rocket thing sure was a highlight. *adding new additional content you wouldn't ever dream of/predict by seing Moon (surf on the back of a Mantine, Team Rocket, ultra-beast worlds)

*fixing Moon few shortcomings (victory road now has trainers, Mina has an actual trial, blush mountain has now an evolution area, move tutors are back at full)

*and keeping what worked and was good from Moon (like having trials and totems instead of gyms)

    I went after this game after having played sm just for the sake of completionism, but turns out there were way more changes than I expected, even if you ignore the all new move tutors and story that third versions tend to have;

the rotomdex was also enhanced, it can talk more or less to you depending if you choose yourself to interact with it and give you items like Mr. Bonding used to

I played every game in the series and have many favourites so I'm hard to please when it comes to new experiences with the franchise, but I really had a great time playing this one. While the story is very different from SM, it's still decent, I noticed changes at the start but the real bulk is in the second half and post-game.

Because of those changes, I can recommend USUM even for experienced players like me or for who already played SM (To compare: I wouldn't recommend Platinum and Emerald just after R/S and D/P but this one changed enough that I would, since I still found tons of enjoyment from the new features, so I didn't regretted it). I'm glad pokemon is still good even after 21 years, so I can't wait for what the Switch one brings too.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game itself has more and better content than the already decent Sun/Moon games. Also worth saying this generation brought to the main series something I always loved in the mystery dungeons spin-offs: an exciting, beautiful story. While the first set of games focused more on Lillie and her relationship with her abusive mother, here this plot point still remains, but a new focus is given to the character of the legendary Necrozma, which really reminds me of characters from the previously mentioned mystery dungeon spin-offs, which is a very good thing. It's suffering and state as an endearing, understandable antagonist was really well written and a pleasure to see added in the pokemon games and mythos. Expand

-Team Rainbow Rocket. For anyone who takes interest in the bad guys of the main games over the past 21 years.
-Parallel universe ultra recon squad giving story elements and designs new to the series.
-Best trainer placement of any Pokémon game to date by far. The karate guys on champion road, the golfer at hokulani, lotta laughs.
-All legendary Pokémon. Probably the biggest sales point for fans of the series.
-Charmander and all the other starters also available to catch so it’s pretty cool for old people with nostalgia. Same was with Rainbow Rocket.
-Background Pokemon. Much like the trainer placement, the sense to have a Pokémon walk by the window outside or come down a chimney etc is superb. No value to find other than the satisfaction of seeing some neat Pokémon walking around. The rare chimney one was funny too.

    The Pretty Good
-A ton of new sub events. Some of these are awesome, some not. Ditto becoming human being official stuff in the games was awesome etc.
-The photo club was a lot more fun than I expected. Still don’t think there’s enough reason to spend a lot of time ther but it’s neat.
-Surfing is also surprisingly a pretty fun mini game. But also not something I feel the urge to do too many times.

    The Not So Good
-Main flow of game is pretty much the same as Sun and Moon, even though much of the story is different.
-Some new backgrounds are pretty bland areas with some exceptions as well.
-Some things in the game are jokes that will go over the majority of everyone’s head most likely. The new gym for example.
-Nothing groundbreakingly innovative. But this can be said regarding almost all Pokémon games since the original. They stick by the if it’s not broke don’t fix it mind set, which does have its benefits.

The game wasn't a rehash of the original version, it was more like a new adventure. More things to do, more features and more details! When it came time to summon the Legendary, the cut scene, which I will not spoil, had me gasping! I have had the game since release, but all of the post game content has kept me essentially glued to the game, I know I haven't found half of it yet! There's enough "side" content to keep any one busy with the game for a very long time, before and after completing the main game's goal of becoming the regional champion. The biggest touch I love most, and always felt was missing from previous games, was the random Pokemon moving about in the scenery, as if continuing on with their daily lives despite the trainer nearby. No longer are they just invisible entities hiding amongst the tall grass, waiting to pounce the first person they can. Now you can see them walking about on mountain cliffs or along river sides, moving around so that you catch a glimpse of them through a window or break in the trees. Even in the various cities and towns, you can catch a glimpse of them just living their lives. You are able to interact with some, which is a nice touch!

The only thing that kept it from a solid 10 was the Rotom Dex on the bottom screen. It. Will. Not. Shut. Up. I thought it was bad in the original, basically leading you along while seeming to be a touch condescending (in my opinion) but this new one is like that one person who follows you around talking about every little thing over and over and over, despite your obvious attempts to escape. If I were able to turn off the constant "chatter" it gives, this game would be amazing.

Overall, this game, while a second version of the Generation 7 games, still comes out to be an awesome stand alone game while still sticking to the core mechanics that has kept me playing Pokemon since the days of Red, Blue and Yellow back on the Game Boy Color. I eagerly await news on a hopeful Gen 8 game that will inevitably force me to buy a Nintendo Switch (or whatever console it comes out on) just to continue my Pokemon Addiction.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was good, that I already expected when I ordered it, but I had long given up in expecting pokemon games to actually offer difficulty and this one also did it. For many years it's what I wanted, at least for "pokemon" standards, not really something spine breaking, just enough to up the feeling of a quest you have with this kind of game. I wanted it not just difficult because it lacked good pokemon or movepools to use against enemies, and not just an extra mode I would unlock only after beating the main campaign. And finally I got it, almost like a christmas miracle. The totems all had actual strategies behind them, Giovanni is tough with his Mega Mewtwo, Ultra-Necrozma was tough, so were all the old bosses (specially Archie to me, but that may be team I had chosen), even Hau pulled his weight, specially when he pulls a Blue at the league.

Now, it's still a pokemon game, so it's not like anyone would get stuck in it, it's a traditional, simple to understand rpg after all, I'd even say it could be a good first entry in the series as the lack of hms means even kids can enjoy going through the routes catching pokemon (and the pool of options is varied, comparable to XY in that regard, which helps), but compared to all previous pokemon games it had way better challenge to me (through I warn you to never use the exp share as it seems to remain as an undeclared form of an "easy-mode", thanks to the extra exp).

The question is now is this game worth picking up if you've owned the original Sun and Moon? If you are not a hardcore Pokemon fan than no. I recommend this game for Hardcore fans, Competitive Players, like me, and the new people that will enjoy it. Speaking of competitive this game has made it so simple. And on top of that lots of legendaries will be available to use. That being said Smogon is a great website to use to make a team and you can do it with this.

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the greatest pair of games in pokemon since inception, bar none other. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the greatest pair of games in pokemon since inception, bar none other. As a fan of the series as a whole, it hurts me to make such comparisions as all games have had strong points until now but I say it being a fan since Red and Blue came out so long ago. They are the most polished games and all core mechanics feel like they are at their best.

What surprised me the most playing it was not the changes and additions to enrich the games of Sun and Moon (who mind you were also very good and if the Ultras didn't existed they'd be maybe the best game in the series instead), but how it feels like it succeeded in all it tried, just like with Sun and Moon, it didn't just changed things, but it MATTERED and it WORKED.

The games are the hardest a pokemon game has been, mostly by giving actual strategy and thought to the enemies and bosses. Totems specially. The level design is great and looks beautiful, as with the predecessor there's no grid, making the routes feel like real, natural places, and making you put more thought in how to find its hidden secrets. Catching all pokemon, training them, battling, breeding, all seems tweaked to make them more pleasant to do. the QoL changes were massive and the region is better, including an extra trial to do.

There's new things to do that can expand immensely your play-time even if you don't care about on-line trades and battles, from small add-ups like letting you play and interact with wild pokemon or having more z-crystals to find and collect, to bigger time-sinkers, like how you can:

-literally surf on top of a pokemon to compete for the highest score in multiple tracks

-find hidden secrets everywhere with new NPCs that weren't there before, some have small stories relating to a pokemon or a secret event

-travel the multiverse on top of a beast and find legendaries, shinies or Ultra beasts depending on how well you play and again fight for the best score. There's also new Ultra Beasts and their lore was revamped a lot.

-face an entire new saga in the postgame, who was also expanded a lot too by the way

-fight the new Battle tree mode that lets you go all out with no restrictions
And that's the top of my head only.

Everything that I praised in Sun and Moon is either back or better, plus more, making this feel like a worthy replay instead of how previous games like Crystal or Yellow would feel as the same with no changes. I'd say the changes here by far surpassed previous examples the series itself gave, even though those games are some I really enjoy too.

I go as far as to say the Alola part of this long series is not just composed of amazing games, they also feel like a love letter to the fans, from the real challenge it brings as the hardest games, to improving and callibrating the content from its predecessors, to the whole mentioned above post-game plotline, that brings a decent challenge mixed with a nostalgia trip that brings so many characters back from all gens. You can even restart the game multiple times and it will feel as if its the first since there's so many options to pokemon in your team, helps that without hms I can do monotype runs and other gimmicks by myself too, which would before be gimped by restrictions that aren't put on you anymore.

It has the qualities of the earlier ones obviously, but also new content, from characters to game aspects, despite being a third version, it actually bothers to change its content and add a lot on every part of it, including new pokemon even. The complete opposite of Platinum for example, which disappointed me back in the day by being an exact clone of Pearl with fixed pokedex. That's not the case here, even playing Ultra games just after the previous ones still works (again unlike pearl to platinum).

One of the best generations, but improved to the limit, it has a story, with larger plots and sidequests, a spectacular and an excellent competitive scene, full of many possibilities. And without a doubt the best post-game to date.

Combining all of this with the fact that a small handful of new, non-mythical Pokémon have been added mid-generation for the first time in the series, and that the Pokédex has been expanded to natively include over 400 Pokémon catchable in the games without trading, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon have managed to make the region of Alola feel even more alive that it did before – and that’s quite the achievement.

In some ways, it feels like these games have come too soon; Pokémon Sun and Moon are still so fresh in our minds and we can’t help but feel that the Ultra versions would have felt more special – and therefore easier to justify purchasing – if a little more time has passed. You’d be forgiven for not wanting to jump back into the same world again so soon but, in their own right, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are truly incredible entries to the series that deserve to be sitting amongst the elite Pokémon titles. If you’re ready for another trip around Alola’s beautiful islands, this is the way to do it.

Hardest Pokémon game to date. The only big problem is that they ruined the original Sun and Moon story... That for me it's still the best one in the series to date.

The issue with this game is only that it is pretty much the Ultimate version of Moon and not a new game, that is going to be an issue for people who have already put a lot of time into Moon, for people who have not played it, this is the not going to be an issue and these people would get way more from Ultra Moon.
This is a great Pokemon game !

While it is objectively the definitive Gen 7 experience, it can hardly be considered a Director's Cut that combines the best of the original games like it's predecessors Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum did before it. Because the USUM experience is split between two games, players will still experience version exclusive Pokemon among other things including clothing options. (I can't buy a red shirt in Pokemon Ultra Moon? Really?)
This game, like others of the same formula, is a nearly cut-and-paste clone of Sun and Moon for the majority of the game with only minor additions sprinkled in every now and then. As someone who was unimpressed by Sun and Moon, I was hoping that this game would be able to change my mind about Generation 7. No such luck. Just like the games before it, USUM suffers from excessive hand-holding and you can barely walk 5 steps in any direction without an NPC stopping you to talk or to explain painfully obvious tutorials.
This game still has all the charm and fun of a regular Pokemon game but, just like the original Sun and Moon, it lacks freedom and the never-ending tutorials and cutscenes left me with a bad taste in my mouth. If you didn't like SM, steer clear of this one. If my issues with SM didn't bother you, you'll probably enjoy this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pokémon Sun/Moon was one of the best experiences I had in the Pokemon world! The region is great, vibrant colors everywhere, Alolan form Pokemon, customization of your character and despite not having the best story all around, it was still enjoyable. Still, when Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon was announced I was expecting something along the lines of Black/White 2, a sequel to the previous games. Instead, and the trailers of the game show that they advertised a "different" Alola region. Was to be expected the same timeline but eventually, "mid-game" as the director of the game said, "the timeline will change". Unfortunately, in a game with 4 islands, the changes start in the last one and until then the story continues pretty much the same as in previous games, except for the addition of a new team and some new pokemon. The issues of Sun/Moon were fixed but this still felt more like a DLC and not a full game. It was the first time ever I felt buyers remorse with a Pokemon game and I regret a lot paying full price for it. Still, if you never played Sun/Moon you should go for this one. Expand

This game is very disappointing for people that played the originals, which were also very disappointing. Despite having time to make this game better it instead is still filled with frame drops and has the same slow and tedious gameplay. If you're looking for a good Pokemon game then go play OrAs

Ultra Sun ist disappointing. Way too much dialogue so you cannot even enjoy the cities and routes. Thumb gets tired from keep on pressing the B button. The menu is confusing, the gym leader system terrible, the Pokemon nothing new. Compared to Pokemon X/Y this is no improvement, except for the graphics which are the only impressive thing. It takes way too long to get into the real game.

Just purchased this game last night. I have been playing it a lot. It doesn't seem very different and I'm not sure I could offer this to anyone who has played Sun or moon. I'm not seeing a ton of differences so far and it feels like a chore to get to a point where there might be differences in the gameplay.

The world-building in Alola is great though. Good designs for new monsters, the concept of Ultra Beasts and Regional variants are welcomed additions to the world of pokémon. Seeing old faces from previous games is always appreciated. Overall, Alola is a nice region but with a badly executed storyline, too easy, and this ultra version barely changed any of those problems. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game does NOT worth 40$ for those who have played Sun or Moon Before ! An entire year of wait for just a tiny DLC of the Original game. And, Oh my... The Music of the 7th gen is one of the Most TERRIBLE thing i have seen in a video game ! (Still not worst than Sonic Boom).

So this game have like almost NOTHING New : Just Two more Legendaries and a story that have changed just a bit and this game is so disgustingly easy ! (Just like Sun and Moon) Team Rainbow Rocket is pretty much the only good NEW thing about this version.
But in the end, i just realized how Lazy GAMEFREAK are for the Fans right now. Always aiming for young audience only and Never making a Pokémon Game for Adult ! (And i mean by that, taking the game more seriously, i don't mean sexuality or extreme violence). But everyone is going to buy it, because ITS POKÉMON of Course !

In the End, i really wish they were less a lazybones and start making a Revolutionary Pokemon like i always dreamed about it. But this game show me how FAR we are from this. Please do NOT buy this game. They don't deserve your money.

Pokedex now fires up and takes a quick snapshot whenever a new Pokemon shows up. at first this was cool, but it's just super annoying as the game goes on. There are enough new things in the game that make it a phenomenal remake of the previous game, sun and moon, however due to it being released one year later and for all intensive purposes being the same exact game which has a few tweaks here and there I'm giving this a low score sense we just played this game last year. Nintendo should have released this game this year instead of releasing Sun and Moon last year. For those who are new to Pokemon or skipped sun and moon this is a phenomenal Pokemon game. Expand

The beginning is tedious and too long, I like to refer to it as an hour+ long tutorial. Throughout the playtrough I'm constantly forced into long dialogue sections inbetween new areas/towns, it's annoying. You still can't skip cut scenes and there's way too much dialogue, most of it is the same as the last game so it's really really boring to sit through. So the major con of this game is all the dialogue and cutscenes. As for the difficulty, it's an improvement over the original games. I had a bad team with no fire type and it made things harder for me personally, i turned off the exp share and turned it back on once i had 6 pokemon in my team and i've been the same level as enemy trainers. The legendary battle is the hardest part of the game, surprisingly.

I liked the new selection of pokemon though, i was really happy to have a mareep/ampharos in my team again, its one of my favorite pokemon ever. I felt like there was a lack of fire types though, besides marowak and salazzle. Also, the catchrate for necrozma is 255. Which means it has the same catchrate as route 1 pokemon, lol.

I highly recommend this game if you HAVE NOT played sun and moon yet, but if you have, then don't bother.

I wanted to give this a better review, I really did but I cannot. The game is near identical to Pokemon Moon with not enough changes to warrant buying the game if you own Moon/Sun already. If you are still going to buy one of the games, by from the Ultra series as it has a bit more in it than regular Moon/Sun. Also, hope you love hand holding because there is plenty of it in this game

    Pros:

    Better graphics than previous games
Good amount of content and end-game
    Good new pokemon

Only cons I can think of are that the game is SUPER hand holdy, constant dialogue, cut scenes and tutorials which are really annoying
    Much prefer gyms over trials

Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon is still fantastic, especially since the original was a major shake-up to the decades-old Pokémon formula. The update may be overly samey to someone who has already played Sun & Moon, but it does improve upon the base game in several ways. The new version is a must for newcomers to either this current generation or to Pokémon in general.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the definitive versions of Generation VII. Fans that already made the trip to the Alola region might find that it takes a while to get to the juiciest new additions to the game, but diehard Pokémon fans and those that held off on Sun and Moon will find a lot to enjoy. The games are truly robust experiences, and the new additions help flesh out a game that was already quite strong. I could detail more about the story changes and enhancements, Mantine surfing or Team Rainbow Rocket, but not much else needs to be said. This is a terrific Pokémon experience that has only gotten better.
