Solid enough but this is a lazy lazy game as far as trying to push the series up. This game is a cash in by Nintendo. It's more of the same. If that's what you want go for it. But I found this disappointing

I don`t play Mario game so often. Heck, the only other one I own is the First one for the Wii.

But it`s fun. I don`t get why the 3D makes the background blurry though, and also the music is quite similar to NSMB Wii, which I feel is kind of lazy. And although the game says to "collect coins, blah blah blah", you can`t really do anything with them. Nothing. But although I haven`t

But although I haven`t tried it the multiplayer looks fun, maybe I`ll try it with my brother sometime.
All in all; 7. It could of been better, but it`s good. Maybe wait till a price drop because 40$ seems a bit much for it.

The first New Super Mario bros was fun. This, was not that fun, for some reason i can't exactly pinpoint because it was so boring i don't care to revisit it again. A very lazy sequel with a coin gimmick to somehow extend playtime, it is insulting to Nintendo and Mario fans. Nintendo, if you want to ask 40$ for a 3DS game, begin by investing some more money producing it first. Thank you.

Super Mario Bros 2 is a competent platform game for the 3ds. While it's not a bad game it never really captures the imagination or compels you to play it for hours on end. Overall, it's just too similar to previous games and in many respects not as good as Mario 3D or for that matter Donkey Kong Country.
Hard to recommend to anyone other than fans that simply must play every Mario game.

The gold collecting is a nice side addition, but the one million coin goal has a less than stellar reward and this features feels only made for completionists. Speaking of completionists, if you don't like collecting everything - avoid this game. The game is 5 hours through all the levels. This game is made for replayability, something that isn't too bad with the addition of Coin Rush. Overall, this is a good game but only a mediocre Mario game. Expand

Well, I have to say, This was one of the most disappointing games Nintendo has made in a LONG time. The story is the same as ever (Shocker) And it's really getting old. I just wish nintendo would stop relying on their trump card of their mario fanbase. I am a huge mario fan, really, but this game felt so lifeless and boring and REALLY way too easy. I felt almost as if I was playing a toddler game. The wii game had everything right. Nintendo, would it be possible for you guys to start being an innovative company in your games again? Also a longer, harder experience would be nice too. Possibly a difficulty option? I miss games like super mario world 2 , where you get difficult creative innovative levels that aren't impossible, but actually take more than 5 minutes to do. I'm just tired of lazy game making. This game is short and the lack of innovation caused this review. No online mp in 2012 is brutal and unacceptable. Just bc it's Mario doesn't make it good, this is pandering and I'm not a fan anymore as an adult. I demand better in my games and this doesn't cut it. The raccoon suit only thing remotely positive in this game.

Mario may be a hero, but he is no prince, nor a knight. His only title is Plumber. Doesn't even have an apprentice to do his dirty work for him. I mean even if you counted Luigi, which no one does, they do the crap work together. Not a sound mind for business it would seem.
Probably why he's in dire financial straits in the first place. His plan to fix it? Kill things and turn them into money.

Who can complain? It's more of the same old Mario everyone loves! Or so Nintendo would have us think. They should've went with the "Mario Kart 7" naming convention and called this one "Super Mario 238", since it's the 238th Mario game. Along with removing "New" from the title, it would describe the game a bit better. Yet another Mario game from the same "if-it-ain't-broke" 1983 Nintendo mold, New Super Mario Bros. 2 does have some nice little puzzles and the standard Nintendo polish. Compared to the DS prequel, it's a little more challenging, but not in the best ways. For example, to get some secrets you need to hit a randomly cycling item block, so be prepared to commit Mariocide multiple times to get that coveted third star coin in some areas. The gameplay is otherwise identical except for the addition of the somewhat disappointing two-plane (background and foreground) 3D graphics and a few new (old?) power-ups. The levels are pretty easy to complete, and in the end you'll have a million coins and hundreds of extra lives. NSMB2 a fun little romp, but if Nintendo wants to play up the nostalgia factor while maximizing profits, I'd rather they just re-release Super Mario All-Stars in 3D and be done with it. It would be far less embarrassing for them, and far more enjoyable for the fans. Expand

I really enjoy this game, but I'm sad to see that Nintendo has reused graphics, sound effects and music from New Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Even the final boss theme is recycled from the Wii game, which is inexcusable. Nintendo, please don't do what EA does with Madden; think of a more creative idea.

It also doesn't help that the game is devoid of any challenge. Some are quick to point out the amount of lives players get and the option of using the white-raccoon suit as examples of how easy the game is; however, the difficulty (or lack thereof) problem is much worse than that. Lives are fairly outdated at this point and limiting them won't really affect the difficulty of the game and you can simply choose to not use the white-raccoon suit. The game is easy simply because it's easy. Levels offer little platforming challenge and you are -constantly- getting more power-ups.

...but I digress. While the game's difficulty might be a turn-off for many (myself included), I couldn't help but enjoy my time with this game. I even see myself playing it in short bursts from time to time (everyone's got time to kill on the toilet).

NSMB.2's main gameplay feature is the large supply of gold coins scattered within the levels, with the aim of collecting as many as you can while also rescuing the independent as ever (ha!) Princess Peach. The gold coin collecting idea feels cheap and shallow, just a glorified collect-em-up essentially. The game features characters from the original Super Mario Bros. Trilogy but as with the Wii version of NSMB, this implementation is purely for nostalgic purposes but has no overall effect on the actual game. Co-op mode is wishy washy and to be honest, just as clunky as NSMB Wii's multiplayer was, with the character only focusing on the leading player making the game feel more competitive than cooperative. The Gold Rush mode is a fancy word for collect-em-up time trials. The premise is simple, collect as many gold coins throughout a set a three levels and reach the exits, then repeat these to improve your score. Sounds fair enough but improving your high score is not entirely accurate as the levels are randomised each time!? I know...there is DLC Coin Rush levels but it is a rather lame attempt at longevity to be honest.

There are some ‘new’ power-ups. There’s the racoon suit, oh wait that’s not new, it’s from super Mario bros 3. This lets you fly and glide. Then there’s the gold flower, which is new, except it isn’t- it’s basically a fire flower than can also turn blocks into coins upon contact with the fire. And as usual, the good ol’ fire flower returns. Not Nintendo at its most creative, but the design of the levels is great, and that’s what keeps you wanting more, even though it is too easy. You can play through the whole game with two players, but player 2 will need another copy of the game.
Then there’s the coin gimmick. Basically all the levels in New Super Mario Bros 2 are bursting with coins and different ways to get them. This is where Nintendo get creative, placing all sorts of new ways to collect coins, and that’s where that rare gold flower comes in useful too. Just like any other Mario game, Bowser kidnaps Peach, and saving her is the goal. As usual, on top of that is star coins- three in each level, you know the story by now, and also secret exits. But now there’s also the goal of collecting 1 million coins. This takes a long time, but levels are overloaded with coins, and the more skill you have, the faster you’ll reach the goal of 1 million coins. What’s the prize, I hear you ask. I can tell you: a new main menu screen. That’s it. Coin redemption can be found in coin rush mode, though, when you play three randomly selected courses in a row and try to collect as many coins as you can, and reach the goal in a 100-second time limit. One death and it’s game over. You can trade high scores via streetpass, but there are no online leaderboards, which is disappointing. However, coin rush is a simple, addictive experience and I’m surprised nobody’s thought of it before.
In conclusion, this is the first Mario platformer ever that isn’t essential. I’d recommend it, but it stays too true to Mario’s roots.

New super mario bros 2 is an okay game, but it's not as good as the original new super mario bros. but it's still fun, but this time, it's a little different, bowser did not kidnap princess peach this time, the koopalaings did. and it's up to mario or luigi to travel through 8 worlds to save her. one problem I have with this game is that these are the exact same worlds from the originalNew super mario bros 2 is an okay game, but it's not as good as the original new super mario bros. but it's still fun, but this time, it's a little different, bowser did not kidnap princess peach this time, the koopalaings did. and it's up to mario or luigi to travel through 8 worlds to save her. one problem I have with this game is that these are the exact same worlds from the original new super mario bros there's no difference at all, there's the mushroom kingdom, the egyption world, the tropical/jungle world, the ice world, the mountain world and the final world. Why can't they just be original and bring different worlds, this is a SEQUEL not a REMAKE. another thing is that this game has a coin collecting theme that comes literally out of nowhere. there's this coin meter that counts how many coins you have collected and the game challenges you to collect one million coins. This does nothing and it does not add any replay value, I got a super mario game to go on an adventure through 8 worlds and defeat bowser at the end, not to search everywhere for hidden coins or power ups that help you get coins. there are some classic power ups like the fire-flower, or the or the tanoki suit, but this game has some new power ups, like the gold enemy power up which turns all of the enemies and most of the hazards into gold and you get coins for defeating them, or the coin block, with the coin block, the faster you run, the more coins you get, one hit and you lose the coin block. and then there's gold mario, with this power up, mario can shoot gold fireballs and turn everything the fireballs hit into coins. the graphics are okay, when the 3D is off, if you turn on the 3D the backgrounds get blurry, the higher you rise the 3d slider, the blurrier the backrounds get, this does make it look like the backgrounds are far away, but it makes the backgrounds look awful, this is the only 3DS game that I have ever played where I hate the 3D effect. the level design is great, and it does feel like some classic mario platforming, and, there's the tanoki suit power up, now it really feels like super mario bros 3 on the NES. there's also a 2 player co-up mode where you and another player can play through the entire game together, this is a very cool addition. another thing they added is a coin rush mode, this mode really is nothing special, you just go through the levels and collect as many coins as possible before the timer runs out. this mode can also be used for 2 players. New super mario bros 2 is not as good as new super mario bros, but it's still a great game to play to make time go faster like on a long car trip. Expand

now for the bad the biggest issue with the game is content i cant name one other Mario game that has a lack of content i mean there are 6 main worlds and 3 special worlds that may seem like a lot but each world only as 6-10 levels which brings me to the next issue that it took me less then four hours to beat the game and that includes the 3 special worlds now i did enjoy every part of the game but when it came to an end i felt ripped off 30 bucks for 4 hours of content?i can think of indie games that are not even half that price but offer ten times more hours of content next the power ups feel the same and really there in not one new one the golden flower is new but the issue with it is that its only in 3 to 5 levels and you lose it after completing the level meaning that you only get maybe 10 minutes of using it (it is fun but needs to be used more)

but having this being my most played game on my 2ds (with 20 hours clocked in) i would only tell die-hard Mario fans to get this game the game is fun but the only way to really get out all the content is re-playing it for all the stars/secrets and if that's not what you enjoy doing i would say get NSMB from 2006 on your ds/3ds/2ds or go and get one of the older Mario games on the virtual console

Collecting coins is usually fun, but when you're bombarded with them at every corner (I had levels where I had up to 600 coins on one run), it kind of saps the fun out of it. It's not fun if you're going to give it to me with no challenge; which brings me to the difficulty. This was EASILY the easiest Mario game I've ever played. I blasted through it in less than 6 hours, and finished with 184 lives. I may have had 2 or 3 levels that slowed me down, but none of the rest of it was cake.

It gets a 6 because it's always fun being Mario, even if it was super easy. The graphics were nice and the sound was good. There's just no challenge behind it.

When you see a sequel to New Super Mario Bros, you probably imagined it being better than the first one. It's not. However, the concept of limited lives goes out the window. Every 100 coins is another life, as usual, but with all the coins literally everywhere, you will have over 100 lives in no time. The difficulty is almost non-existent for any seasoned Mario player. I can see it being a small challenge for younger audiences, but even then, you get the Invincibility Leaf, which gives you the ability to basically skip a level. It's a fun game nonetheless, and I did enjoy the hours I spent beating the game. But this game isn't catered towards Mario fans. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review contains a very minor spoiler at the end so be warned. This game is okay but it is kind of a disappointment in some ways. The art style and graphics kinda suck. I know it is supposed to look simplistic and old school because its Mario, but it still looks bad to me. My main complaint would be that many levels have a horrible ugly blur filter over most of the background for no apparent reason. Maybe Mario is supposed to be near sighted or something. Another thing is that almost all the haunted house levels are just some stupid level gimmick like a giant boo that scrolls the level for you and stuff that just isn't fun. Thirdly the boss was lame and annoying. Oh wow its giant Bowser swatting at your platforms from the background! I kinda suck at Mario so I died twice to the final sequence and each time you attempt it again you have to watch Bowser get turned giant by the koopalings in a sequence that cant be skipped. Its only like 20 secondsish but it still bothers me that it can't be skipped because there is literally no good reason for that. If you want to play a platformer for 3DS just get Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D its way better in every way. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The sequel of New Super Mario Bros. on the DS doesn't look as great as the first two games in the series. They just reused many things from its predecessors, like music, enemies, overworld map, and many more. That's just lazy and uninspired, Nintendo. Also the coin gimmick just felt pointless for me.

This game had some good points (It's not completely bad), like precise controls, great level designs, fine graphics, and catchy remixes. Hey, I didn't say the music is bad. I mean, it's good, but it's getting repetitive.

Overall, this game is actually fun to play. I highly recommend it.

I'll advocate this until the end of time, Mario must have tight controls, the wall slamming should be well executed to work. The game originally challenges you to collect 1 million coins, but this is unlikely to be achieved during story mode, and as a result you will more than likely have to purchase paid DLC in order to do this. This supports the idea that this game was rushed in order to get more sales; ironic since this is what Mario will be doing in the game as well.
The single player campaign is not massively long or difficult, and the game lacks replayability, and has no multiplayer modes like the minigames or Mario vs Luigi on NSMB DS.
It isn't broken or unplayable in any way. It's just very lacking and not at all memorable, and I expect a lot better from a major Mario game.

Also, you know how collecting 100 coins in a Mario game earns you an extra life and how the game stayed balanced because you would get that bonus and die in return a few times? Well, 100 coins still does this in this game, so guess what, you'll be getting the max amount of lives fast. This would've been fine if the game was challenging at all, but it really isn't. While not technically bad by any means, its just more of the same, and the coin gimmick doesn't really change anything.

Definitely the worst New Super Mario bros. I don’t want to say that the game is bad, because it isn’t, but it isn’t the typical WOW Nintendo game.

This game is so bland and oversaturated that it makes the game worse when it's the THIRD "NEW" GAME. It has a meh gimmick and the stages are boring. It does have pretty-good graphics and ok stage design. I much rather play the original "new" game and that game is over 13-years-old. That's sad...

I love me some Mario. This however, felt like a boring slog from the moment I entered world 2 and thought, "oh... So it's just more of that huh...?". Unless you have a ridiculously high need to pick up coins, this is the most "meh" 2D Mario in existence. Very much recommend a pass.

This game is by far the best in the New Super Mario Bros. Series. First of all, it brought the Tanooki leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3 back to a 2D platformer and created a new variant, the Golden Tanooki leaf. Thirdly, the aforementioned coins, to quote YouTube personality Scott The Woz, are "...really satisfying to collect in this game." The final thing I have to say about this game is that the rewards for getting 1,000,000 and 9,999,999 coins are not worth it, but the DLC levels are fun. fun fact if you bring a gold flower to 1-2 you can get 1,200+ coins in the level without dying. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is for sure the worst "New" title. It's like they took every improvement made in the Wii title from the first "New" game for the DS away, and added filling content so it would sell better. The coin system is also just for marketing but plays really bad. Half of the game is just for collecting coins, and there's nothing new in the game itself except that. Of course, we got the raccoon back from SMB3, but other than the fire flower (or that bigger radius gold flower) there aren't any interesting items at all, which is weak for a game like this. What annoyed me the most, was definitely the usage of the mini-shroom. They used it badly in the first game. Fixed it in the Wii title, and then went back to the stupid old ways again by requiring to take that shroom from another level or a toad house, into one level to get a starcoin or a secret exit. This even happens with the raccoon-leaf! No for real, items as well as the new "coin system" really disappoint in this game. And if that wasn't enough we got more boring and way to easy koopaling fights, as well as boring fights again the new bosses (which I don't know the name of right now) that are way to similar. They don't get harder at all. The music is just stolen from the Wii title, and you can't even rotate yourself midair anymore. Overworld is also pretty much a straight line, with again, music from the Wii-title but at least they did well with level designing and dlcs. Expand

It's just fun Mario goodness, while it may not have much challenge in the main game, the DLCs are challenging, the level design are well made, the game looks vibrant and colorful, the music is very lively, simply a must play underrated game.

This game is just as good as the first game in this series! But not innovative enough! 3D land invented traditional (linear) Mario games in 3D! The original Mario invented 2D platformers, Mario 64 invented 3D platformers!

Positives: This game contains tons of bonus world's and optional challenges to unlock, which is a nice optional things for completionist (like me)! This game however

    Positives:
This game contains tons of bonus world's and optional challenges to unlock, which is a nice optional things for completionist (like me)! This game however isn't innovative as the previous New Super Mario Bros (NSMB) game but it isn't bad on its own, there are lots of secrets to find and everything you expect from a normal Mario game! The multiplayer works very well though it's 2 player only! I also love the collect as many coins as you can concept! It is really neat! There's even a coin rush mode that is well implemented into this game! This is a neat game. The DLC for this game is AWESOME! Giving good players harder content is always welcome! I remember having fun racing my friends in the hard levels of the DLC! It is an AWESOME game, but releasing it at the wrong time brings it to the negatives.

    Negatives:
The game's music, world map, backgrounds and a lot more things feels like it's ripped from the original NSMB and barely remixed/edited. It just felt the same and it's bad/not innovative/uninspired! Another problem I have is that the world theme is tied to level themes! This means if I'm at a desert world, every level will be desert themed! All the themes are the same because there's really not too much new themes in this NSMB game! Unlike 3D world/land we saw many new gameplay mechanics and new themes which makes the game fresh again! Speaking of gameplay mechanics, it's literally the SAME as previous games, nothing "new". there's only a few enemies that is new but only featured in a couple of levels and then abandoned, I didn't really like the golden fire flower power up, it's not that exciting! The level design lacks imaginations, you don't really get excited for the next level because you know it's know it's pretty much going to be the same as the one you're currently on. Didn't implement the 3D for the 3DS very well. It was also released at the wrong time, because at the time NSMB for the Wii U came out like 6 months later, people were confused on which one to buy or to waste their money on both.

    Overall:
The game itself is a: 100/100
Compared to other games at the time: it's around 70/100 sitting at a between B and C tier
Compared to other games now: 2/100 because Mario Maker 2 is out so there's no reason to buy this game anymore! If you really want to, just get an emulator and get the ROM for free! So AVOID this game!

Now this is still a fun game, but it is the same game as the DS and Wii entry. I prefer this over U though, but that is a different story for a different review. The only thing this game ads is the coin gimmick, which makes an all ready easy game to one of the easiest games ever! I don't mind easy games and I don't really mind it here but still. This is not worth the original price. In fact I would say this is a 5 to 10 dollar game. I give New Super Mario Bros 2 a 5.5/10 and a very low C-. Expand

The game is really just ok. This one is the least unique in the New series, a lot of the music is pretty much reused. Also, some of the star coins/ secret exits suck to find and it is really generic. But this is really fun with the coin collecting, looking for coins is actually fun this time, and I had fun trying to 100% this game. Worth a buy for the 3ds

This game is too generic. The mechanics are all right, the graphics are fine, the 3D effect is fine but unnecessary, and the main feature of lots of coins makes the game ungodly easy. It’s more Mario, and if you like that, then get this, but almost every single other Mario game gives you more reasons to play than this one.

I think this is a great game overall. The platforming is smooth and fun, the level design is engaging and the visuals are also nice. My main issue with this game, however, is the boss fights. Every game that has me collecting things, NEEDS to also give me a good reason to collect it. A work and reward system. I collect machine parts in Horizon Zero Dawn in order to craft better weapons. I collect herbs in Resident Evil 4 to fuse full heals. I collect coins in New Super Mario Bros 2 for...for what? For a higher number on the counter? Grabbing coins in a Mario game is of course nothing new, but this is the first one to put so much emphasis on it. Yet the game provided no strong incentive to do so. I could grab all the coins in a level, but did I get a special upgrade? A bonus level? Nothing. There are already star coins. What’s the point of putting so much focus on regular coins? There’s a mode called “coin rush” where players collect as many coins as possible in 3 levels, then have their high score put on a leaderboard. It also lazily reused levels from the single player mode. Why would I want to play through the exact same levels again? Repetitive. Boring. I personally don’t give two **** about a leaderboard in a Mario game, so coin rush felt like all work no reward for me.

Aside from that, this game is virtually a carbon copy of New Super Mario Bros Wii. Same physics, same visuals, same upgrades, same everything except level layout. In world 6, there was a really cool level that I wish the devs would’ve used in other worlds. While I was platforming, the Koopa Clown Car would be in the background flashing its eyes every 5 seconds or so. If I was caught in the open, I’d be petrified. My goal was to scramble my way from one cover to the next. It was nice to experience something different for a change. I feel the devs are getting very lazy with the 2D Marios. I’m getting tired of the same enemies, same boss fights, the same obstacles, the same hub world, and the same DAMN blocks over and over. I know how the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But time is starting to really wear on this formula. Innovate Nintendo! I know you’re good at it, so do it.

This is my least favorite New Super Mario's Brothers game it has really bad overworld music, the game isn't pretty to look at, there's nothing new, and it's the easiest game in the series. Nothing interesting happens after 1-5 until the final castle when you fight the Koopalings and that's the only good part of the game.

Being a Nintendo game, it is extremely polished. I encountered no bugs during my playthrough. Mario also controls well, none of his actions feel awkward (although all the actions Mario can do in this game are from previous games). The Super Leaf makes a nice return, it's integrated really well into the levels and shows up about as frequently as the fire flowers do. A white variant of the leaf is used when you die repeatedly, it makes you invincible, able to stand on water, and able to fly faster. This powerup is optional and only lasts for the level you get it, making it a nice boost for players that are less experienced with platformers. The final new powerup is the Gold Fire Flower, which lets Mario shoot gold fireballs that turns bricks into coins and empty any item blocks. This doesn't really feel like a powerup though, as it shows up once in a blue moon and also only lasts for the level you get it. It ties in to the game's theme of coins. The idea of "everything is coins" that the game pushes, while fun, does barely enough to make the game distinct. The main changes that add to this theme are coin roulette blocks, enemies dropping coins when killed by a fireball, and gold rings that make all enemies spew coins. The lackluster art style and world design don't help with making the game distinct either. Wile graphically it's a step up from NSM1, the art style doesn't change. It all feels like generic, inoffensive mario, and the only areas that touch creativity are the secret levels. The tower levels all have the same boring miniboss, triceratopses that scream and shoot fireballs. The koopalings come back as the bosses of each level, and the fights against them are alright, but not particularly memorable or difficult. The game's difficulty is made to appeal to all players. To get from one end of the level to the other is easy, but the game has plenty of opportunities for experienced players to use their skill with star coins and secret levels/exits. There are 2 secret worlds, and a star world to encourage you to collect star coins. I enjoyed all these secrets, and they add a lot of replay value to what would otherwise be a straight forward and somewhat easy game. On it's own, NSMB2 is a fun game, the level design is definitely on par, and I wouldn't call any of the levels boring. However, compared to the other recent mario games, it certainly blends in with the crowd, the volume of coins being the only thing that makes it distinct. I can understand why people wouldn't like it when it first release, as people were getting tired of NSM games with few artistic/mechanical changes. If you have a 3DS and are looking for a fun and polished platformer, this game is certainly top of the line, but in terms of the entire mario franchise, it's pretty mediocre. Expand
