I think this is a great game overall. The platforming is smooth and fun, the level design is engaging and the visuals are also nice. My main issue with this game, however, is the boss fights. Un bajón de calidad respecto a la primera entrega, debido a su bajo nivel de dificultad, por lo que se completa en muy poco tiempo. Lo peor es el reutilizar el soundtrack de New Super Mario Bros Wii.

This game is fun and all and it is a good game no doubt but the problem with this game is that there is literally nothing new here. They bring back the same bosses from New Super Mario Bros Wii, they reuse the same level themes from the past 2 games, the "new" enemies are literally just reskins of enemies already in the game that were taken from past games and they slap gold and bone on them like how lazy can you possibly be?, there are no new powerups besides the gold flower which you can't even keep after one level and ig the tanooki suit is new but its just taken from Super Mario Bros 3. The only new content are the level packs and the coins gimmick which the level packs suck to get because instead of unlocking them from secrets or playing the game you have to purchase them with money. The coins gimmick is pretty addicting but it will take you months to get 1 million coins because you basically need the level packs or you will have to grind the main story levels which really sucks. The impossible pack is actual trash tho those are byfar the worst levels in any 2D platforming video game. Also goodluck getting 9,999,999 coins because without the level packs that is basically impossible to do, and by the way what do you get for getting 1,000,000 coins in this game? A golden statue of Mario that is literally it all that grinding for a statue not anything cool like lost levels or new worlds nope a pointless statue and that is the same for 9,999,999 its a golden statue of Mario except he has the tanooki tail now. So this game is good but very bland so if you wanna play it go ahead but I recommend the original New Super Mario Bros on DS that game is a 9/10 literally almost perfect. Expand

This game isn't bad, and I don't really see it as being much worse than its DS prequel.

More of the same stuff with the addition of the game being way to easy due to the massive ammount of coins (its not worth it to collect them all). DLC exists which ironically contains the hardest 2D Mario levels ever.

This game is just mediocre. The whole point is to collect 1 million coins. and what do you get for reaching that goal? nothing. no new game mode, no new character, no new power up, no, just a stupid useless statue of gold Mario. And if you reach the other goal of 999,999,999 coins, all you get is the same statue but with Mario in the Raccoon suit. So, it's pointless doing it in the first place. (And only people who literally no life or friends would spend time doing it anyway). Nintendo may have well as just taken lives away as you will constantly get them with the over abundance of coins. You will never get a game over, which takes away the value of lives. This just wasn't worth the £45. mind you, Nintendo are know for over pricing their games, so it doesn't surprise me at all.
There is still fun to have in this game and the level design is alright, but it does get boring quickly.
Coin rush mode is call as it's like a speed running mini game and that's where I spent most of time with. The DLC packs were also good. The introduction to world mushroom and world flower was cool idea, but both worlds were empty (huge emphasis on the word empty). there's nothing in them, apart from the stage circles. They are literally just coloured glass platforms.
I will say though, that this game does have a decent final boss fights. But that's the only good boss fight as the only others are against the Cooperlings, and they are way too easy and are just really not creative. Oh, and Bowser Jr isn't in this game either. That's another problem with this game, It's just too easy.
The new gold flower power up in this game is just useless. turns block into coins, as if we didn't already get enough of them.
the story is exactly the same as the other two games as well, which is just lazy and disappointing.
over all, this game isn't terrible, just hugely mediocre. The soundtrack ain't great either. There's a lot of repeat. 5.5/5.

The sequel game is not that bad, but the main goal being to collect 1M coins just numbs me a bit.
I love the fact that this game brought back the super tail from Super Mario Bros 3, but overall the items in this game is OP and therefore makes the game easy.
Also, the main story has only 6 worlds you can explore, being the original game, New Super Mario Bros DS, had 8.

Every game that has me collecting things, NEEDS to also give me a good reason to collect it. A work and reward system. I collect machine parts in Horizon Zero Dawn in order to craft better weapons. I collect herbs in Resident Evil 4 to fuse full heals. I collect coins in New Super Mario Bros 2 for...for what? For a higher number on the counter? Grabbing coins in a Mario game is of course nothing new, but this is the first one to put so much emphasis on it. Yet the game provided no strong incentive to do so. I could grab all the coins in a level, but did I get a special upgrade? A bonus level? Nothing. There are already star coins. What’s the point of putting so much focus on regular coins? There’s a mode called “coin rush” where players collect as many coins as possible in 3 levels, then have their high score put on a leaderboard. It also lazily reused levels from the single player mode. Why would I want to play through the exact same levels again? Repetitive. Boring. I personally don’t give two **** about a leaderboard in a Mario game, so coin rush felt like all work no reward for me.

Aside from that, this game is virtually a carbon copy of New Super Mario Bros Wii. Same physics, same visuals, same upgrades, same everything except level layout. In world 6, there was a really cool level that I wish the devs would’ve used in other worlds. While I was platforming, the Koopa Clown Car would be in the background flashing its eyes every 5 seconds or so. If I was caught in the open, I’d be petrified. My goal was to scramble my way from one cover to the next. It was nice to experience something different for a change. I feel the devs are getting very lazy with the 2D Marios. I’m getting tired of the same enemies, same boss fights, the same obstacles, the same hub world, and the same DAMN blocks over and over. I know how the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But time is starting to really wear on this formula. Innovate Nintendo! I know you’re good at it, so do it.

Being a Nintendo game, it is extremely polished. I encountered no bugs during my playthrough. Mario also controls well, none of his actions feel awkward (although all the actions Mario can do in this game are from previous games). The Super Leaf makes a nice return, it's integrated really well into the levels and shows up about as frequently as the fire flowers do. A white variant of the leaf is used when you die repeatedly, it makes you invincible, able to stand on water, and able to fly faster. This powerup is optional and only lasts for the level you get it, making it a nice boost for players that are less experienced with platformers. The final new powerup is the Gold Fire Flower, which lets Mario shoot gold fireballs that turns bricks into coins and empty any item blocks. This doesn't really feel like a powerup though, as it shows up once in a blue moon and also only lasts for the level you get it. It ties in to the game's theme of coins. The idea of "everything is coins" that the game pushes, while fun, does barely enough to make the game distinct. The main changes that add to this theme are coin roulette blocks, enemies dropping coins when killed by a fireball, and gold rings that make all enemies spew coins. The lackluster art style and world design don't help with making the game distinct either. Wile graphically it's a step up from NSM1, the art style doesn't change. It all feels like generic, inoffensive mario, and the only areas that touch creativity are the secret levels. The tower levels all have the same boring miniboss, triceratopses that scream and shoot fireballs. The koopalings come back as the bosses of each level, and the fights against them are alright, but not particularly memorable or difficult. The game's difficulty is made to appeal to all players. To get from one end of the level to the other is easy, but the game has plenty of opportunities for experienced players to use their skill with star coins and secret levels/exits. There are 2 secret worlds, and a star world to encourage you to collect star coins. I enjoyed all these secrets, and they add a lot of replay value to what would otherwise be a straight forward and somewhat easy game. On it's own, NSMB2 is a fun game, the level design is definitely on par, and I wouldn't call any of the levels boring. However, compared to the other recent mario games, it certainly blends in with the crowd, the volume of coins being the only thing that makes it distinct. I can understand why people wouldn't like it when it first release, as people were getting tired of NSM games with few artistic/mechanical changes. If you have a 3DS and are looking for a fun and polished platformer, this game is certainly top of the line, but in terms of the entire mario franchise, it's pretty mediocre. Expand

This game is too generic. The mechanics are all right, the graphics are fine, the 3D effect is fine but unnecessary, and the main feature of lots of coins makes the game ungodly easy. It’s more Mario, and if you like that, then get this, but almost every single other Mario game gives you more reasons to play than this one.

    Positives:
This game contains tons of bonus world's and optional challenges to unlock, which is a nice optional things for completionist (like me)! This game however isn't innovative as the previous New Super Mario Bros (NSMB) game but it isn't bad on its own, there are lots of secrets to find and everything you expect from a normal Mario game! The multiplayer works very well though it's 2 player only! I also love the collect as many coins as you can concept! It is really neat! There's even a coin rush mode that is well implemented into this game! This is a neat game. The DLC for this game is AWESOME! Giving good players harder content is always welcome! I remember having fun racing my friends in the hard levels of the DLC! It is an AWESOME game, but releasing it at the wrong time brings it to the negatives.

    Negatives:
The game's music, world map, backgrounds and a lot more things feels like it's ripped from the original NSMB and barely remixed/edited. It just felt the same and it's bad/not innovative/uninspired! Another problem I have is that the world theme is tied to level themes! This means if I'm at a desert world, every level will be desert themed! All the themes are the same because there's really not too much new themes in this NSMB game! Unlike 3D world/land we saw many new gameplay mechanics and new themes which makes the game fresh again! Speaking of gameplay mechanics, it's literally the SAME as previous games, nothing "new". there's only a few enemies that is new but only featured in a couple of levels and then abandoned, I didn't really like the golden fire flower power up, it's not that exciting! The level design lacks imaginations, you don't really get excited for the next level because you know it's know it's pretty much going to be the same as the one you're currently on. Didn't implement the 3D for the 3DS very well. It was also released at the wrong time, because at the time NSMB for the Wii U came out like 6 months later, people were confused on which one to buy or to waste their money on both.

    Overall:
The game itself is a: 100/100
Compared to other games at the time: it's around 70/100 sitting at a between B and C tier
Compared to other games now: 2/100 because Mario Maker 2 is out so there's no reason to buy this game anymore! If you really want to, just get an emulator and get the ROM for free! So AVOID this game!

It's just fun Mario goodness, while it may not have much challenge in the main game, the DLCs are challenging, the level design are well made, the game looks vibrant and colorful, the music is very lively, simply a must play underrated game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is for sure the worst "New" title. It's like they took every improvement made in the Wii title from the first "New" game for the DS away, and added filling content so it would sell better. The coin system is also just for marketing but plays really bad. Half of the game is just for collecting coins, and there's nothing new in the game itself except that. Of course, we got the raccoon back from SMB3, but other than the fire flower (or that bigger radius gold flower) there aren't any interesting items at all, which is weak for a game like this. What annoyed me the most, was definitely the usage of the mini-shroom. They used it badly in the first game. Fixed it in the Wii title, and then went back to the stupid old ways again by requiring to take that shroom from another level or a toad house, into one level to get a starcoin or a secret exit. This even happens with the raccoon-leaf! No for real, items as well as the new "coin system" really disappoint in this game. And if that wasn't enough we got more boring and way to easy koopaling fights, as well as boring fights again the new bosses (which I don't know the name of right now) that are way to similar. They don't get harder at all. The music is just stolen from the Wii title, and you can't even rotate yourself midair anymore. Overworld is also pretty much a straight line, with again, music from the Wii-title but at least they did well with level designing and dlcs. Expand

This game is by far the best in the New Super Mario Bros. Series. First of all, it brought the Tanooki leaf from Super Mario Bros. 3 back to a 2D platformer and created a new variant, the Golden Tanooki leaf. The final thing I have to say about this game is that the rewards for getting 1,000,000 and 9,999,999 coins are not worth it, but the DLC levels are fun. fun fact if you bring a gold flower to 1-2 you can get 1,200+ coins in the level without dying. I love me some Mario. This however, felt like a boring slog from the moment I entered world 2 and thought, "oh... So it's just more of that huh...?". Unless you have a ridiculously high need to pick up coins, this is the most "meh" 2D Mario in existence. Very much recommend a pass.

This game is so bland and oversaturated that it makes the game worse when it's the THIRD "NEW" GAME. It has a meh gimmick and the stages are boring. It does have pretty-good graphics and ok stage design. I much rather play the original "new" game and that game is over 13-years-old. That's sad...

If you have 3DS/2DS, and wondering if you should get this or Super Mario 3D Land, definitely get Super Mario 3D Land. While this is not a bad game, this game can only be mediocre at best. For anyone who felt the Mario series got stale, this coin mechanic and silly coin based power ups add a whole new dynamic and fun to a thirty year old series. Golden enemies that leave coin trails, a block head power up that gives you coins depending on your speed, a golden flower. There's a lot of enjoyment here with fun level design as always.

Where do I even start? The presentation is just copypaste of New Super Mario Bros DS and Wii, much better games. The story is just copypaste from older NSMB games, the hub worlds, power-ups, bosses, enemies, heck, even the 1st phase of the final boss is just a copypaste of NSMB Wii! Even the music is the same as those games.
The only "new" power-up is the tanooki leaf, and it's alright I guess.

And all of this problems also affect the level design, god it's one of the most boring, uninteresting designs I've ever went through. Some people try to defend the level design of this game by saying "This game is for beginners" but, Mario World was also meant for beginners, and it was also meant for hardcore gamers. THAT is the biggest flaw of this game. It literally treats you like you were stupid by giving you sooooo many lifes.

Not only is the game easy and short (due to how short the levels are) another thing is that they've removed a lot of stuff from older games. Where's NSMB Wii battle mode? NSMBDS minigames? Instead we get a new mode called coin rush which yes, it can be enjoyable sometimes due to some levels are really hard (these hard levels are exclusive to this mode btw) and you also try to collect the most amount of coins.

Oh yeah, That's LITERALLY the main "gimmick" of this game, collecting coins. In concept, it could be awesome, but they way the did it is just terrible. 1.) Why do we still have lifes whenever 100 coins are collected you receive a 1-up. And if the game's main "gimmick is to collect coins, it's nearly impossible to get a game-over and it makes the game even easier. Just no. 2.) Due to how boring the level design is, it's just soo easy to collect them 3.) Why do we even have to collect coins? The goal apparently is to collect 1 million coins, but the prize for doing that is just an insult to the fans who've spent hours getting 1 million coins. Do not try to get those coins, like, never, you will get dissapointed.

I can go all day long saying how mediocre this game is. Because it just doesn't bring up something new to the table. The fact they use coins, COINS, for main gimmick just proves what I've just said. This game was made to do money, it did money cuz casuals and Nintendo literally released another NSMB game that exact year. (well, atleast THAT game did something different) And this game is soooo forgetable, if it never existed, nothing would've happened. Do not play this game. If you want to play an excellent game without being frustrated on how difficult it is, just play Mario World. Just, don't play this cash-grab.

Also, you know how collecting 100 coins in a Mario game earns you an extra life and how the game stayed balanced because you would get that bonus and die in return a few times? Well, 100 coins still does this in this game, so guess what, you'll be getting the max amount of lives fast. This would've been fine if the game was challenging at all, but it really isn't. You'll barely die. The games assets and environments go through the lame motions the past two games did, grass world, desert world, beach world, snow world, jungle world, whatever, it's the same garbage each time, and no original music is provided either, it's all from NSMBWii. It's incredibly lazy, all the bosses are shockingly, the Koopalings and Reznors from SMW and nothing new like Yoshi's Island or Galaxy. And don't even get me started on the final battle, but that'd be spoiling the game.

A new mode that Nintendo put in the game is called: "Coin Rush", where you run through courses in a short amount of time collecting as many coins as you can. And thankfully, in case you're a beginning player, the invincible White Raccoon suit is optional for Coin Rushing. You can even virtually challenge other players high scores via Spot Pass. The there's the downloadable course packs exclusively for Coin Rush, with packs like remakes from the original "Super Mario Bros.", to the most hardest courses in the history of "New Super Mario Bros.". They're not expensive and are worth the experience.

Finally, we're at the Multiplayer Mode, which is probably the biggest disappointment in the game. The previous title, "New Super Mario Bros. Wii", had the ability to have 4-player action, and while chaotic, it still was enjoyable. This time however, you're reduced to only having Mario and Luigi and the opportunity to have Mario go one way, and Luigi go the other in far distances was completely lost. You share the same screen once again like in "New Super Mario Bros. Wii". And while it may not be as chaotic, it still the weakest feature in the game.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 offers experiences for both beginners and experts, and staying solid to Mario's 2D platforming roots, this is a game you cannot miss. Sure, some potential was lost but I think that's just the 3DS's limitations.

This game is, put simply, the weakest entry in the Super Mario Bros series. The new 'gimmick' with this game is collecting large amounts of coins, which causes the inherent issue of gaining hundreds of lives very quickly, meaning that a game over is virtually impossible to get, especially considering that the levels are actually pretty easy compared to the other NSMB games. The game originally challenges you to collect 1 million coins, but this is unlikely to be achieved during story mode, and as a result you will more than likely have to purchase paid DLC in order to do this. This supports the idea that this game was rushed in order to get more sales; ironic since this is what Mario will be doing in the game as well.
The single player campaign is not massively long or difficult, and the game lacks replayability, and has no multiplayer modes like the minigames or Mario vs Luigi on NSMB DS.
It isn't broken or unplayable in any way. It's just very lacking and not at all memorable, and I expect a lot better from a major Mario game.

The first New Super Mario bros was fun. This, was not that fun, for some reason i can't exactly pinpoint because it was so boring i don't care to revisit it again. A very lazy sequel with a coin gimmick to somehow extend playtime, it is insulting to Nintendo and Mario fans. Nintendo, if you want to ask 40$ for a 3DS game, begin by investing some more money producing it first. Thank you.

    It's a good game
It's all about movement. I totally enjoyed the game yet wished the level bosses were a little tougher
still this is one of my very favorites

This one feels the same as the ds one but little bit more this version lacks a lot but still is good but I can't bare the mistakes it has to offer. This game didn't need a rehash. The 3rd one should of.

New super Mario bros 2 is as an entire package a good game. Positives: good controls , good levels, nice amount of power-ups, fun, coin rush, music and overall presentation. Of course New Super Mario Bros. 2 is left with many gold tricks and abilities as of that's pretty much the only thing unique about this game, but the gameplay begins to pack a fresh pack of blocks from Nintendo.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is good, but I would only recommend it to diehard Mario fans (though it might honestly be more of a disappointment to them). The game's central point, using various methods to collect a ton of coins, might shiny and attractive on the outside, but in actuality doesn't really add anything to the gameplay. Since what could have been turned into cool new powerups was instead wasted on this gimmick, it's more or less just the fire flower and the tanooki leaf, which seems pretty lame considering all the awesome powerups we've seen in other recent Mario games. In conclusion, New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a good platformer at heart, but ultimately fails to bring anything new to the table, and feels like a watered-down version of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. This is one of the best 3DS games of all time. I mean it. The levels are short but well designed. The power-ups are brilliant. This is one of the best Mario games for a portable device. 10/10 :D. This game is beautiful on the level design.

This game is a solid mario game, although the gimmick regarding the number of coins in the game is never explained, nor is it really fully realized. At the same time, the game is just very standard- nothing too exceptional about it. The multiplayer is fun to play with other people, and my wife and I beat it all the way through together. It does take some getting used to because you have two people on the screen and you have to watch out for each other, and the camera only follows one of you at a time, so one of you is just kinda there for support. I'm incredibly grateful that they included local multiplayer as a feature at all though because it was fun actually being able to play a videogame together that my wife enjoys. Overall, a good buy but nothing to get super ecstatic about. Expand

Easily the worst in the series. You just play through levels, some aren't actually that bad, but a lot aren't up to Nintendo's usual standards and have coins spammed everywhere. It's a bit like Mario Maker, really...

More of the same, but still another fun 2D Mario platformer. The additional goal of collecting 1 million coins in total is a highlight that kept me playing.

While some deride this game as formulaic and far too easy, this game flips the old 2D Mario platformer formula on its head by focusing on the coins. The coins, having long remained on the sidelines of Mario's quest to save Peach, suddenly take center stage in this game, in which your ultimate goal is to collect one million coins.

Not only does this challenge appeal greatly to my inner completionist, but this new coin-based focus is inherent in every level in the game. While there are more overt signs of Mario's newfound greed, such as the addition of a few inventive, coin-based powerups, there's more to it than just that. The very level design is fundamentally different from that of NSBM2's predecessor's, encouraging exploration and replay in a way in which previous Mario outings never have been able. For example, if Mario walks to a specific part of the level - for example, a spot underneath a bridge he might have normally overlooked - a series of coins might reveal themselves nearby, a mechanic unique to this game. In addition, hidden blocks have invaded the Mushroom Kingdom, with most levels sporting what I imagine to be at least 3-4 blocks that don't reveal themselves until you hit them. The level designers over at Nintendo leave nothing to chance; every hidden secret is marked by a clue in the level. For example, if you see a section of the level that seems to serve no purpose, try jumping over there, because it may reveal some hidden coins. Is there a series of three standard blocks floating in midair, with nothing but space above them? Try jumping while atop the middle one; you may well find one of the many hidden blocks. It's touches like these, alongside the multitudes of secret areas - all of which rewarding you with shiny, gold coins - that make the levels in NSMB2 a joy to play many times over.

Are the environments and the music borrowing too heavily from Mario's previous handheld outing? Yes. But ultimately, the Mario games have never been about the graphics or music for me. For me, Mario has always been the joy of discovering all the clever little secrets in every well-designed level and guiding that happy little plumber through a giant turtle's medieval attempts at home security to save his off-again, on-again princess girlfriend. In that respect, NSMB2 is a complete success, and with unparalleled replay value and a relatively low price, I can't recommend this game highly enough to lovers of platformers.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 isn't really all that new anymore. What you get is basically the same game as the first one for the Nintendo DS, but with less engaging levels, fewer surprises in terms of power-ups and gameplay, and a boring gimmick set on capturing your inner kleptomaniac.

New Super Mario Bros. 2's tricks may be old, but they are still some pretty darn good tricks. Length is one of the game's rare shortcomings. [Sept 2012]
