The first Minecraft clone has finally arrived on Nintendo. It is not a terrible game, but its attempt to stand out are futile and come across as lazy. There are only one type of enemy. Ants. Ants. Granted, there are 3 or 4 colour variants, but the world is completely baron. There is NO wildlife in this game. You spend most of your time following your compass to find survivors. When you find them, kill the ants surrounding him and he will award you with some ammo or a new crafting recipe. Rinse and repeat.

The game has about 10 different things you can mine. You cannot craft doors, windows, you have to steal them from the ones that randomly spawn. All houses are the same, or with very small differences.

Perhaps the most jarring is the fact that there's no water in the game. No caves to be found. You can't dig very high up or down either. Infact, I completed the game without even crafting a house, there is no need. It says that the ants come out at night, but they are easily dealt with and there is next to no consequence for dying (you lose the item you're holding).

The positive being that the guns work fairly well. For a game that uses ABXY as its second analogue stick it works alright. The controls were a bit finicky, and with no circle pad pro or c-stick support, this will not be for everybody.

I will say, that this game had no chance when up against Minecraft. Minecraft has had years of development and updates. If this game sells enough to make Wobblytooth a profit, I'd like to see some updates.

Updates could save this game. Bring us caves, water, more enemies, more variety, more biomes, more everything to be honest.

Definitely doesn't deserve the score it has right now. For the time this game was amazing, considering the platform it was on. Today it doesn't hold up as well, but still had some fun in it on my revisit. I would recommend getting Minecraft for the New 3ds or this games sequel Battleminerz.

While there is some fun to be had, a purchase is only recommended for creative players who can turn straw to gold - otherwise, stick with a portable version of Minecraft.

An example of what happens when a developer takes Minecraft and clones it in such a manner that is loses everything that made it something special in the first place.

Battleminer definitely falls short of a well-rounded game with some thin gameplay and trying controls dominating Survival mode. It definitely picks up the slack some in its other half, but your spare eShop credit might be better served to wait and see if a better 3DS Minecraft comes along.
