At Averroès & Rosa ParksTBAAverroès and Rosa Parks are two psychiatric units at the Esquirol Hospital in Paris. They belong to the same network as the “Adamant”, the floating day clinic on the river Seine at the heart of Nicolas Philibert’s film Sur l’Adamant, winner of the Golden Bear at the 2023 Berlinale. In Averroès & Rosa Parks, Philibert continues his exploration of this topic. From individual interviews to meetings between patients and carers, the filmmaker focuses on showing a form of psychiatry that continually strives to make room for and rehabilitate the patients’ words. Babenco: Tell Me When I DieTBA"I have already lived my death and now all that is left is to make a film about it." So said the filmmaker Hector Babenco to Bárbara Paz when he realized he did not have much time left. She accepted the challenge to fulfill the last wish of her late partner: to be the main protagonist in his own death. In this tender immersion into the life of one of the greatest filmmakers from South America, Babenco himself consciously bares his soul in intimate and painful situations. He expresses fears and anxieties, and also memories, reflections, and fantasies, in this face-off between his intellectual vigor and physical frailty, which were the hallmarks of his career. From the onset of cancer at the age of 38 until his death at 70, Babenco made of the cinema his medicine and the nourishment that kept him alive. "Babenco - Tell me when I Die" is Barbara Paz's first feature film, but is also in a way Hector's last work: a film about filming so never to die.

The Ballad of Judas PriestTBAThis documentary follows heavy metal pioneers Judas Priest and their half-century journey from working-class origins in England’s industrial “Black Country” to their recent induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The film dives deep into vocalist Rob Halford’s long struggle as a closeted gay man in heavy metal, and explores the “culture war” surrounding the band’s controversial, high-profile trial during the Satanic panic of the 1980s. Featuring exclusive band interviews, appearances by Jack Black, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, Run-DMC, Billy Corgan and other celebrity musicians, as well as an abundance of previously unpublished personal archive, the film captures how Judas Priest defined the sound and look of metal, and also made it more inclusive. Sexuality, censorship, community – The Ballad of Judas Priest speaks directly to our current moment. [Berlin]

The BarTBAIt’s a morning just like any other on one of Madrid’s popular squares. A few passers-by are sitting in a bar having a quick breakfast while others enjoy their first drink of the day. Suddenly, one of the customers is shot in the head and killed as he is leaving the bar. Another customer rushes to his aid but he too is fatally wounded and collapses on the street. Horrified, everyone tries to make sense of the incomprehensible events. Why are there suddenly no people in the square in front of the bar? Is there a sniper on one of the adjoining roofs who is firing at anyone who appears in his sights? Or could the perpetrator be in the bar itself? Anyone here could be the murderer and anyone their next victim. [Berlin]

Blue Road: The Edna O'Brien StoryTBAIn 1960 a young Irish woman named Edna O'Brien wrote a sexually frank debut novel, The Country Girls. She became a literary sensation, writing for The New Yorker, delivering provocative interviews, and authoring screenplays. Her success enraged her writer husband and made her a pariah in her native Ireland, where her books were banned and burned. She would make her home in London, where she conducted numerous love affairs, hosted star-studded parties, and made and lost a fortune. In July 2024, Edna passed away and this film provides a final testimony from her, aged 93, as she reflects upon her extraordinary life for filmmaker Sinéad O'Shea's camera. Granting the director access to her personal journals - read aloud in the film by the Oscar-nominated Irish actress Jessie Buckley - and with additional perspectives offered from Gabriel Byrne, Walter Mosley and an array of renowned writers, Edna does not shy from any subject. Blue Road is as candid, dark, and enchanting as O'Brien's wonderful novels.

Bolan's ShoesTBAThis story takes us on a tumultuous journey from the height of T. Rex mania in 1970s Liverpool to the present-day poignancy of what would have been Marc Bolan's 75th birthday. It captures the heady exhilaration of glam rock mania through the experiences of a group of over-excited kids from a local children's home before a devastating road accident changes their lives for ever. Years later, and still clinging to the adoration of her childhood idol, survivor Penny takes best friend and fellow Marc Bolan fan to visit his shrine in London but a chance encounter there catapults her back to the horror she had tried so hard to forget. Bolan's Shoes is a joyful celebration of Seventies culture and brims with the energy of that vibrant era but, like Marc Bolan's legacy, it's retro glitter is dimmed by the tragic repercussions of that deadly road accident. Light-hearted comedy and supernatural chills abound in this inspirational story that explores the enduring legacy of childhood trauma and the life-affirming power of music.
