This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An incredible episode, close to if not a masterpiece of storytelling in a way that few episodes of TV can hold a candle to. We're talking Ozymandias of Breaking Bad level of perfect here. To take such a meaningful tale between two people in love and manage to see it from beginning to end in the backdrop of humanities doom, in such a short amount of screentime is incredible. Bill's personal growth to go from surviving to living as Frank brought out his best is a powerful telling of the power that love and companionship can have on a person. In the end, they lived life on their terms and made the absolute best out of the worst situation the world could throw at them. It will be incredibly difficult for viewers to get through this episode without shedding a tear. Expand

THEY WERE GAY IN THE GAME. THAT'S A FACT. The sad reality is that, unlike Rings of Power which actually sucks, this episode was REALLY good, with the only thing noteworthy is that they two people focused on were gay. There wasn't even sex, so all these "gay porn" comments are so stupid. If you liked the movie 'Up,' this episode is basically the same thing as the first ten minutes.
It's just incredibly sad that 80 percent of the reviews here are 100% people angry about gay people and their relationship being the focus (despite, again, ZERO SEX). If you actually want a legitimate review, this is excellent television, and it's going to rightfully win awards.

I doubt most people flooding it with bad reviews are mad about the deviation from the source material (Bill & Frank being a couple exists in the games' canon, their relationship is just fleshed out more and the ending they get is better), it's just plain homophobia, which is disappointing, but at the end of the day I guess stories like this being told and being prominent is a victory (albeit a small one, all things considered) in and of itself. In the game we have these stories told through scenarios, letters, and lines, like in the sewer with Henry and Sam, where they show the history of the families that sheltered there. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A sad and powerful story that is spoilt by some unbelievable and frankly quite stupid scenes. The story of Bill and Franks love is beautifully done. The rest is just rushed and totally unrealistic. The first two episodes really made me believe in the last of us universe and then I watched this one and was surprised how far fetched they made some of the scenes.. it was a bit like watching the 80s tv show the A team. Unlimited supply of wine, food, and electric just totally ruined the plot of what tlou was all about. It was like Bill and Frank were living in the Garden of Eden on the moon. I never understand why tv companies treat their audiences like children and put all this totally over the top, make believe stuff in a show that’s meant to be a gritty believable survival programme. What should of been the best episode so far turns into the worst. Electric fences 20 years on ??? Come on HBO !! Must do better. We are not kids that believe anything you tell us. Expand

Nevertheless, I was excited to see it brought to life and experience the story for the first time through the show. When I tell you that I was not ready for episode 3, I truly was gobsmacked! I was surprised by it’s honestly, warmed by its love, And heartbroken by its ending. while watching I kept finding myself waiting for it to end badly (like they always do) for it to turn sour and bitter, for it to pan away for the love. for the episode to end in a way that tainted the whole show. For them to portray us as they always do, something to fill the plot and kill us off badly at the end. But instead, we were shown a love story in a cruel world. A story that could have been easily scraped, a story that could have been filled with tropes but it wasn’t. This show has now become number one in my books. This chapter greatly
extends the background and the
evolution of characters that did
not have it in the game. This
chapter makes it clear that the
world is not only Ellie and Joel
and a lot of infected and extras
there is a world full of stories of
people who suffered at the
hands of the apocalypse, despite
being a world eaten away by an
infection, it is a world equally
rich and full, even more than
what is presented to us in the
game. Neil uses this episode, as
well as the rest of the show so
far, to show us sides of the world
that he couldn't tell in the
game, he's taking
advantage of the medium as
much as he can, surprising us
with more story in the process. Is
not just Frank and Bill, if you pay
attention you realize more details
about the world. There are many
people who only want the story
of the game on the screen, but
an adaptation is much more than
that.
Also it seems like some people forgot that Bill was always gay and the only reason his story wasn't shown as much in the game is because it's a different medium and that wouldn't have worked (?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I feel bad for giving this episode the same grade I gave the first one, but this is a 10. This episode could be taken a part from the series and made into a short movie, easily. It’s sad seeing the scores being tainted by butthurt bigots, who minded seeing to queer man being loved and in love. Yes, it deviates from the game. But so has every episode up until now. This episode made me fall in love with a simple character we didn’t know much about, and fall deeper in love with a character we’re well accustomed to. I knew what it was coming and when it goes coming, yet, I was on the edge of my seat all throughout the episode. Not only did Neil and Craig give us a lovely love story, but it gave us a deeper inside of the world and Tess and Joel’s dynamic duo. It deepened the connection of those watching, with those acting. I am really happy it took this direction and that they’re nailing it. Thank you so much for this, Shannon Woodward :) Expand

Great episode, nice deviation from the original story. Love the way they portrayed the importance of relationships and not being alone, a glimpse of hope and love in a nihilistic and fractured world.

The expansion of Bill's and Frank's story was beyond tear-jerking and brought some light to the horrifically cruel Last of Us environment. Those who criticize this episode and say that it 'isn't in the game' or is showing some 'forced agenda', genuinely must have missed the entire last twenty minutes of the episode where you see how Joel reacts to the letter that is left for him. You see him grapple with the mention of Tess, and you see Joel begin to see his new purpose. I cannot begin to explain how much I love this episode-- it has the perfect balance of adaptation and expansion. Might just go for a third rewatch tonight hehe Expand

It’s refreshing to see a post apocalyptic TV series show a gay relationship with all the nuances it deserved. It’s the first episode to really hold my attention and it really goes to show that the message of life is to love…regardless who that person is you love. Those who find this episode offensive are just snowflakes. As a gay man watching the episode it was great to see this representation and really related to it. Ten out of ten. Very tasteful take at a post apocaliptical romance. Some character context was missing though, and it did come across as somewhat forced, but it looked rather nice and endearing.

Although some people may criticize and hate it, if they played the games they would know that frank and bill were together and that there is gay relationships in the game.

Anyone saying otherwise is just a shameful homophobe. Seriously, this total score shames me, shames us, shames this community. Get with the times, homophobes. Would any of you downvote this episode if Frank were a woman? Sadly, it would be farther from the game (yes they're a gay couple in the game already, pay attention, read the side notes) and worse as a story, since part of the drama was Bill accepting himself at first. And guess what, relationships like this exist in the world. They might make you uncomfortable, but maybe it's time to get a little out of your comfort zone. The world doesn't revolves around you.
