"The Amazing Race," which combines the glossy production values of an IMAX movie, the physical demands of "Eco-Challenge" and the human drama of "National Lampoon's Vacation," sets new standards for reality TV. This is as good as it gets. [5 Sep 2001]
-
Brings new energy and respectability to the "reality" genre popularized by the same network's "Survivor" -- and surpasses it in spectacle and human drama. Great TV lives. ... There is so much more to this show than there is to most of its ilk. [5 Sep 2001]

I love this show. I never thought I'd love a reality show, because mostly I hated all those shows with their wannabe models, fat yutzes and half-wits who try to be as smart as the fat yutz from "Survivor" but are dumber than a family tree of Bushes. But this one actually is so good I am already addicted.

This rousing, scenic contest could well set the entertainment standard for new series this season. [2 Sep 2001]
-
Probably the best of this genre since the network's "Survivor." [5 Sep 2001]
-
CBS may have the most appealing nonscripted hour of the fall. [4 Sep 2001]
-
The best so-called "reality" series since "Survivor." ... "Race" is not only exciting but fascinating to look at. [4 Sep 2001]
-
The Amazing Race... looks like The West Wing of reality, the first of the descendants of Survivor that may outshine its parent. [2 Sep 2001]
-
With this thrilling trip around the world, CBS blows away the Summer of Rats --- thank you "Fear Factor" --- while creating a terrific companion piece to the net's comparatively tranquil "Survivor." [3 Sep 2001]
-
What really separates this Race from the competition... is the blessed absence of most of the contrived conflict and melodrama that have become reality's reason for being. [5 Sep 2001]
-
An exhilarating, fast-paced competition filled with colorful characters, "The Amazing Race" is a pulse-pounding good time.
-
An ambitious and wildly paced around-the-globe journey... "The Amazing Race" appears to have what it takes to become reality TV's next big thing. [5 Sep 2001]
-
If you're like me, this show will hook you in.
-
As long as the show's 13 episodes retain the unrelenting sense of bedlam that characterizes the first, they'll be fine. [3 Sep 2001]
-
Plays down the drama and ratchets up the entertainment. All the teams are compelling for one reason or another. [5 Sep 2001]
-
The pace, beginning with the group's launch in New York City, is fast enough to make the race, not the accompanying whining, the main event. [5 Sep 2001]
-
The show's global scope, scenery and overall sense of adventure make it a veritable Doctor Zhivago of the [reality] genre compared with most of the swill lately in play. [2 Sep 2001]
-
Ambitious and complicated. [4 Sep 2001]
