It does what any good show does: builds up on the things established in the pilot. Regina’s and Emma’s dynamic becomes even more intriguing with the two now becoming serious rivals. The way Regina constantly frames Emma and makes her look bad in front of her son is a perfect showcase of Regina’s character and Lana Parrilla plays the role so well! She is so good at showcasing all the emotions that the evil queen feels but also playing such a ruthless woman. Tony Perez is spectacular as Regina’s father because of how well he can play a nice, kind-hearted father figure. His dialogue is very well written and his costume and hair all really portray the way he tries to do whatever is best for his daughter. The way he treats Regina even when she’s so evil is something absolutely lovely and when she rips his heart out it is a truly sad moment eventhough this was his first debut. What I really am not a big fan of is Maleficent’s costume. I realize that it is the costume-makers trying to be creative but it looks simply cringeworthy. The “horns” on the head are something that you can buy in any low-budget costume shop. The pink dress is extremely casual and unispiring and the hair style is something I see on nearly every girl. I do however love the battle between Maleficent and Regina as it has simply outstanding cinematography and cool moments, especially the one where Regina sends all the glass and weapons to pierce through Maleficent or when she traps Maleficent inside a chandelier. Robert Carlyle is even better in this episode then in the last one. His goofy squeaky voice fits Rumplestiltskin so well and the way he moves, jokes and emotes is absolutely incredible. In this episode I have two moments that impress me in particular. The first one is when he’s joking about Regina saying “worried. So so worried”. And the even better one is when he asks Regina what she sacrificed for the curse. She answers the heart of a horse and he has one of the most impressive moments of Robert Carlyle’s performance ever. He gets angry, rough and mad and jumps onto the wall of his cage grabbing Regina by the throat and screaming. Powerful moment right there. I’d also like to compliment the episode for some incredible make up, costumes and hair styles. This is something that is good throughout the whole season but it is especially noticeable in the scene where Regina summons the evil creatures to put up the curse. The blind witch’s make up, hair and dress is spectacular as is of the rest of the evil ones. The cgi is not the absolute best but still acceptable. It does improve though even in later episodes. The color palet is incredibly good, combining various completely different colors into one frame that seems to be of exactly the same color. Each place and scene is represented by a certain color depending on the moment that is happening. I also love the way the scenes are intertwined and edited. For example when the evil queen turns the gnome into stone and then it comes to that stone gnome in the garden of Regina and it is already a completely different scene. The ending with mr.Gold is spectacular because of 2 things: Robert Carlyle’s amazing performance and the show hinting that Gold knows more then others do with him saying “please” and dramatic music playing.
