Fictional Alan Menken Awards in play or not, the best television out there is only competing against itself, and HSMTMTS has not only set its own bar high, but worked damn hard to hit it.

When Federle brings in the North High cast (also competing for the big “Menkie” award for school productions), “HSMTMTS” becomes much more complex than any of its predecessors. ... “HSMTMTS” may have the longest title of any series on television, but it earns each of its consonants.

HSM: TM: TS’s capable young cast and quick wit remain the show’s greatest strengths. As long as this sharp series continues to establish an identity separate from its source material, it should remain top of its class for seasons to come.
