The 15 Worst Movies of 2022
The gallery on this page contains the lowest-scoring films released in the United States between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2022. Films are ranked by Metascore (an average of grades given by top professional critics) prior to rounding, and any titles with fewer than 4 reviews are excluded. All scores are from December 16, 2022.
(#2) Just two years ago, Anthony Hopkins won his second best actor Oscar for his performance in The Father. But good roles—with one exception—have been hard to come by for the now-84-year-old star in the years since, leaving him to appear in such duds as The Virtuoso and now Zero Contact. Released in May (in theaters and via NFT, one of many gimmicks employed by producers to drum up interest) the sci-fi thriller finds him phoning in his performance as an aging tech entrepreneur whose death leaves others to carry out his mysterious final project, which may involve time travel. To be fair, everyone in the pandemic-filmed feature phoned in their performances—or, more accurately, used Zoom, which means that despite featuring exterior footage filmed in 17 different countries (another gimmick!), the bulk of the film consists of static talking heads, generating about as much excitement as your last Zoom meeting at work. (Or less: Your work meetings probably don't include ten minutes of end credits.)
We didn't even get to the good news yet: Zero Contact is the first film in a trilogy.
“It’s a film full of boring conversations, daft sci-fi conceits, and confusing suspense, which add up to practically nothing. 'Zero' indeed.” —William Bibbiani, The Wrap
