12+ Films to See in December
With Academy Award nominations rapidly approaching, December is the month when several major contenders will finally be unveiled. While most moviegoers must wait until January to see films like Martin Scorsese's Silence, Ben Affleck's Live by Night, Mike Mills' 20th Century Women, and Theodore Melfi's Hidden Figures, there are still plenty of solid choices headed to a cineplex near you this month, including Damien Chazelle's La La Land, Denzel Washington's Fences, Pablo Larraín's Jackie, and more. We've picked out the best of the bunch below.
Chilean director Pablo Larraín (No, The Club) has two unconventional biopics hitting U.S. screens this month. Jackie, his first English-language film, follows Jacqueline Kennedy (Natalie Portman) in the aftermath of her husband’s assassination. At the Venice Film Festival, writer Noah Oppenheim won the Best Screenplay award and Portman’s performance generated lead actress awards buzz.
Just two-weeks later, another Larraín movie arrives in theaters. Neruda has been submitted by Chile to compete for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film follows poet Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) in post-WWII Chile as he’s hounded by a persistent police inspector played by Gael García Bernal. Both films confront fame, history, legend and legacy in inventive ways.
