12+ Films to See in December
With Academy Award nominations rapidly approaching, December is the month when several major contenders will finally be unveiled. While most moviegoers must wait until January to see films like Martin Scorsese's Silence, Ben Affleck's Live by Night, Mike Mills' 20th Century Women, and Theodore Melfi's Hidden Figures, there are still plenty of solid choices headed to a cineplex near you this month, including Damien Chazelle's La La Land, Denzel Washington's Fences, Pablo Larraín's Jackie, and more. We've picked out the best of the bunch below.
Denzel Washington’s third directorial effort (following 2002‘s Antwone Fisher and 2007’s The Great Debaters) is an adaptation of August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play about a man (Washington) struggling with race relations in the United States during the 1950s while trying to raise his family. Washington and Viola Davis reprise their Tony-award winning performances for the big screen, and are supported by Mykelti Williamson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, Saniyya Sidney, and Stephen Henderson. Critics have noted that the film feels like a play, but they have also praised the intense performances of Washington and Davis, who both should factor into awards season.
