Polish filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski (11 Minutes) reimagines Robert Bresson’s Au Hasard Balthazar with this story of EO (an onomatopoeia similar to the beloved Eeyore), a donkey whose time as a lowly but loved circus animal ends, leading to encounters with all aspects of humanity. The star of the film is played by six different donkeys (Hola, Tako, Marietta, Ettore, Rocco and Mela), and Skolimowski thanked them all when his movie shared the Jury Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival with Felix Van Groeningen’s The Eight Mountains. Poland’s official Academy Awards submission is filled with sorrow, joy, and surprising filmmaking choices.
