Comedy series debuts March 3 on HBO Max
Well, it sounded great on paper. After perfecting the vampire comedy with What We Do in the Shadows, Taika Waititi hoped to duplicate that success with a comedic tale about 18th century pirates. But early reviews (based on the first half of the season) suggest that he missed the mark, resulting in a series that starts off mildly amusing but spotty.
Co-created by David Jenkins (People of Earth) and very loosely based on the true story of aristocrat-turned-pirate Stede Bonnet, Flag stars Rhys Darby (Flight of the Conchords) as Bonnet and Waititi (who also directs the opening episode) as Blackbeard. Rory Kinnear, Ewen Bremmer, and David Fane also star, while Fred Armisen, Nat Faxon, and Leslie Jones will recur. Episodes arrive in batches of 2 or 3 each Thursday.
