Documentary debuts March 4 on Prime Video
Following on the heels of Aaron Sorkin's Lucille Ball/Desi Arnaz biopic Being the Ricardos, where "interesting" casting choices and a limited scope resulted in a film that's a bit less than essential, comes a more expansive nonfiction feature about two of TV's greatest innovators and stars. The first documentary directed by Amy Poehler shows Ball and Arnaz as they were in real life, using an abundance of archival footage (including home movies) and new interviews to trace their trailblazing paths through the entertainment industry while also documenting their much rockier personal relationship. When Lucy and Desi debuted at Sundance in January, critics found the result superior to Sorkin's film. Reviewers found Poehler to be a sympathetic and knowledgeable director and her film warm, moving, joyful, and energetic, even if also a tad too conventional.
