When it arrived in 2019, Martin Eden was an international breakthrough for writer-director Pietro Marcello. His subsequent releases were documentaries—Futura and For Lucio—but his latest film is a drama inspired by Russian author Aleksandr Grin’s novel Scarlet Skies. Set just after World War I, this fable follows Raphaël (Raphaël Thiéry) as he returns from war to find that his wife has died, leaving him to take care of their infant daughter, Juliette, alone. As a young woman, played by Juliette Jouan, Juliette is given a prophecy by a witch about a ship with scarlet sails falling through the sky. These sails are accompanied by a pilot played by Louis Garrel. It’s another enchanting tale by Marcello.
