Mission: Impossible is the rare film franchise that has gotten better over time. The last three films (Ghost Protocol, Rogue Nation, Fallout) have better Metascores than the first three (though Brian DePalma’s original was probably underrated at the time of its 1996 release). Is this because Tom Cruise puts his life at increasing risk with each new outing? Possibly, but the strength of both the ensemble—Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, and Vanessa Kirby are back and Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Mariela Garriga, Shea Whigham, Cary Elwes, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, and Henry Czerny (back but it has been awhile) join the fun—and the filmmaking— Christopher McQuarrie is the first writer-director to stick with the series—cannot be ignored. After several pandemic delays, it’s time to follow Ethan Hunt on another head-spinning, globe-trotting (or, in Cruise’s case, running) adventure to save the world—an adventure that will conclude with Part Two on June 28, 2024.
