D. Smith, a two-time Grammy-nominated songwriter and the director of this documentary about four Black transgender sex workers in New York and Atlanta, took home two awards in the NEXT section of the 2023 Sundance Film Festival—the NEXT Innovator Award and the Audience Award. Smith’s black-and-white debut, which she shot and edited in addition to soundtracking (in part), is an unapologetic, surprising, and hilarious portrait of Liyah Mitchell, Dominique Silver, Daniella Carter, and Koko Da Doll, one that will hopefully be celebrated in the face of recent tragedy.
